Outs: Gov (or Schoey/Nelson if Gov gets off), Allen, Masten
Ins: Barrass, Nic Nat, Rioli

I think schoey can still play in the team as the third tall down back, he did it multiple times last year including the GF. When gov is available, i think it’ll depend on matchups whether schoey or nelson plays in that lockdown third defender role.

Nic Nat for Allen is pretty straight forward. Hickey has been underrated this year and it will allow Nic Nat to ease in as a Pinch Hitter. Allen stiff but i think we lose our forward pressure going back to 3 talls and a resting ruck. Cameron was also excellent on debut so would be stiff to drop him over allen.

Rioli for masten is probably the most straight forward. Masten wasn’t poor but i think he only played because hutch tagged saad (and was essentially a forward). With hutch returning to the midfield this week masto the unlucky mid to be squeezed out

He's had a taste and played ok for a small forward in his first game. Rioli comes back in.

Do you think Cameron would play better than Petro as that is the other option?

Still needs to build his endurance and strength though. He will be a great player in another 2 years but until then he is cover for Ryan, Rioli, Petro and Cripps. Which is fine as one of those four will likely miss games fairly regularly over time.
Both Rioli and Petch (and Cripps to a degree) have other options within team for next week. Mastens spot can be easily covered and we get the opportunity to reward youthful effort.

On a purely selfish perspective I would rather watch Cameron and his football journey develop next week than Masten playing his team role and running into space. Both Cameron brothers add an element of excitement and unpredictable skill.

Also, as a strategy, I think it is important to reward effort. That was a great return from a 19 year old in any match let alone a first match in front of 52,000.

Im all for playing kids and exposing them for development but Cameron wont be playing the next 10 games. And yes would much rather watch him develop than Masten do what he does.

It would be good to take him to the MCG for the experience in case we do lose someone later in the year / finals and we call on him to plug a hole.

I hate the way we bring kids in for one game though, should try to give them at least a 3 game block if we can and they play half decently.

Like Allen and Petch? Ryan & Rioli last year (albeit mature recruits)? Waterman played 3 in a row before the bye as well. Cameron could hold his spot, but it wouldn't be damaging for him if Rioli is a straight swap. Had a real crack in a good win at home. Brander is probably an exception, we haven't managed his blooding well but it's early days.

I'd like to see one of our developing mids get games as the year goes on, but given we're the premier we're doing a decent job giving youth a go. We seem only to play them when we feel they can fill a role and can sustain a reasonable performance.

We've done it to a few over the years, was thinking mainly of Brander though I guess.
Which of our developing mids would you bring in? Don't think any really deserve a game in the AFL at the moment and I'm dubious as to whether many (or any) will make it as AFL players.

Good question. Hoping Matty Allen can string together a few quality performances and earn a spot if a Shuey or Yeo is injured or rested (we saw what happens against a tough midfield like Sydney's). Though, if Nic does make a successful return he may offset a loss in contested strength and allow us to play an extra, more experienced runner.

I think O'Neill is the best chance of being a decent AFL mid but probably not going to get a game this year. I don't think Allen does enough when he has the ball, he's not clean and he just doesn't seem to offer much other than a big body. Brayshaw and Ainsworth don't impress me. I honestly think our midfield depth is terrible and the main area we need to focus on improving in the off season.

Barass with ice on his leg after today's game so could be touch and go for next week, hopefully Gov gets off!

Supposedly a corkie.
I think: Ryan, Rioli, Cameron, Petch, Cripps can all play in the best 22.
Easily. Play Petrucelle on the wing with his run and carry (replacing Masten) and play the 4 small forwards. One will usually be on the bench and Rioli and Cripps have also played decent quality midfield minutes.

We could just go crazy and line up Cameron, Rioli, Ryan and cripps with JD and JK. That would be the shortest forward line we've had over a decade. Nic Nat is too good for WAFL. Straight to NBA post AFL.

We are coming boys we are coming.

Good signs for Nic and Barrass.

Freo lost the game and a couple of players, need the Saints to come back v Lions. Tip four is ours to lose.

Have players in form and good players missing selection.

Adelaide not freo or brissy is the threat to top four

Hence why we recruited Josh Smith I guess. If any outside midfield options go down, he's it (unless you count Waterman, who spends more time rotating forward). Think we weren't prepared to give a rookie inside mid a game at the SCG.

I've suspected for a while that with our loading up of talls, we must have a couple of midfield fa/trade targets.

You would think we would have to be trading in a mid. Plus maybe an Alec Waterman as a late draftee and a mature age pickup. We planned to draft Kelly but Oscar was too good to pass on.

I take it you watched the game on TV? Because if you watched at the ground, you would see Petch do a mountain of work up and down the ground. I can’t understand why people want him out?

I love him as a player, works hard both ways, gets to the right places, kicks a couple of goals as a small forward and yet people want him dropped? WTF? He isn’t going to learn anything in the WAFL, he belongs at this level and needs to stay and develop right where he is.

Yes I did watch it on TV so I accept you don't see the off the ball stuff. I am not down on the guy but think that we need to develop the squad not just the team. Giving Petch a break might just make him realise he has to fight for his spot like most players have to early in their careers. Plus it'd give Cameron a couple of games (squad development). I actually think Petro could be a very very good player but it might be best for his development to have a couple of games back in the WAFL where he could e.g. work on his kicking. It is his first full season and a game or two at the lower level might save him from burn out when it counts (the finals).
Nothing personal against the kid. :)

As I said, for most of the year I would almost pick the best 21 available each week with spot 22 for a development player (Rotham, MAllen, Cameron etc). Sure that might, maybe, possibly, cost you a game but if you can bring on those no. 22-27 players then when you get to round 16 or so you have developed a good squad whose abilities are known.
From that point you pick the best 22 week in week out. It is a long season and there are many weaker teams. So long as you beat most of the weaker teams and a few of the good ones then you get to the pointy end. Then four good weeks is all you need. For that you need a reliable squad, not just a best 22.
