Again, how is it not working? It did well on Saturday, it dd well against Sydney and it was fantastic against the Kangaroos.

How will Pittard improve it?

Because we’re not debating ‘do we or do we not pick Pittard’ (well maybe you are, but the posts you’ve been responding to aren’t), we’re debating ‘do we or do we not pick Ryder + four key defenders’, and we only have a one game sample size against a team with four key forwards to judge that question against. Pittard is only in the conversation as he’d be the logical small defender to replace Clurey, but it could just as easily be McKenzie, or could just as easily go in with 6 defenders rather than 7 and bring back someone like Barry to play further upfield.

I think an inform Clurey is valuable and versitile defender. Unfortunately he is not in good form but fortunately Hombsch is.
Clurey should make way for a runner this week.
Id like to see AJ or Barry make a return.

I hate this 'no changes to a winning team' shit.

Sure we won, but only by five points. We didn't exactly play a perfect game. Don't we strive for perfection anymore?

In a normal week I would agree with you, but this week isn't normal. I'd go with forced/matchup changes only for the following reasons:
  • The 22 on Saturday got the job done. Might not have been our best game, but they stood up when it mattered. Hard to drop anyone after a win like that
  • The boys would all be keen to play in China - just this once I'd be happy to reward them all with a game this week
  • **** SANFL scheduled our bye (after 6 weeks??) this weekend so we have no changes to the formlines for those close to selection, which would have been mighty useful for Jasper particularly

We take Saturday's 22 if all fit plus the 4 emergenices as a back up and maybe as a bit of a reward for a couple of blokes and who might be playing there next year. Ken on Whateley this morning talking about Marshall in a round about way said he wont be travelling, so I reckon Trengove and Barry will go and a couple of others.

I dont get the 4 KPD's argument. Jonas never has been a KPD. He played on Eddie Saturday night, and has been forced to play out of his weight division the last 4 years. Clurey plays more like a tall defender than KPD and its not as if he couldnt play a HBF role.

ON SEN this morning ken said he was flying out tonight. Might be going via Melbourne or Sydney I reckon they did last year
Maybe CX178
Ben told me Saturday night the players are split into 2 travelling group so that all the players get a premium economy seat and can stretch out. So it probably means half on the midnight flight out of Melbourne via HK tonight and others from Adelaide 6.45am flight tomorrow.

Yes jonas can play small but his best form this year has been on talls.

Even against the crows I have no idea if he was on betts or who but I remember seeing him on talls a fair bit so he couldn’t have been on betts all night.

It’s not even like we are talking about matching up one too many key defenders on a small. We could take over 2 key defenders and still be matching them up against smalls. This gcs side is going to have to stack their entire forward line with guys like ah Chee.

Take clurey as an emergency and play a small in his place.

I don't know how you can say that. The reason we beat Adelaide was our midfield were superior. Their forwards clearly beat our defence. Look at their conversion rate in the 1st half. Every goal seemed to be aesy as piss. You could blame it on poor turnovers but a lot of them were in our F50 and they just waltzed down chipping to free players and easy goals time and time again. It happens so bloody often yet every week we're all here praising our defence. Individually, I rate our defenders, collectively, they need serious work on positioning.

Our midfield mistakes caused the goals, the efficiency was shocking and they scored on quick turnovers.

I reckon Jonas' best form has been on players closer to his height and weight.
Freo - he played a lot on McCarthy and then Fyfe when Fyfe moved forward
Sydney - he didnt play on Budy so he floated between Rohan, Heeney, Hewett and Towers.
Brisbane - didnt play on Hipwood so had a medium type player - 185cm-190-cm range
Essendon - played on Stringer and also a bit on Stewart
Geelong - got Dangerfield in the first half then when Danger went into the middle he swapped around
North - Ben Brown
West Coast - mainly Kennedy
Adelaide - Betts

So if Steven May is going to the tribunal tomorrow night and gets off, he jumps on a plane to Shanghai on Wednesday to arrive later than normal. Not great preparation.

If we're taking 4 extras, then Barry, AJ, Pittard and Amon would probably be near the top of the list, judging by recent outs. Unless Marshall is back to play, which from all reports, doesnt sound like it, we take the four runners, knowing we've already got enough tall players in our 22

Hard to justify dropping Clurey for Pittard unless you argue, or know, that Pittard was rushed in early and under the weather.

Clurey out for AJ wouldn't be unexpected. Question to those who have been watching him more closely, I wonder if AJ will be our next HFF-turned-HBF experiment? Runs, kicks and niggles offensively well for sure, but does he 'defend'? May give us a 'harder' option than Houston just now.

Sure but you can’t necessarily say it is working either. We’ve only played the four full-time key defenders once (well I guess we played them all against North too but Dougal spent a lot of time in the ruck that day) and that was against a team with four tall forwards. With Lynch injured, Day likely suspended and Wright still working up his fitness in the NEAFL, Gold Coast barely have one.

Would argue Paddy and a fit Rocky improves our defence 30-50%.

CD confirmed 26 travelling, no Todd, at today’s presser. Said they also have seats available later in the week if necessary

how many we bringing over

I'd have it

the 22 that played on the weekend + 4 emergencies of Pittard, Trengove , Atley and Johnson/Barry depending on injury

Our midfield mistakes caused the goals, the efficiency was shocking and they scored on quick turnovers.

They are just turnovers until our defence is positioned in such away to allow quick ball movement. Not sure what the stats say but we would have to be near the worst for it. Our defenders get sucked up the ground then get caught out when turnovers happen. If they've got an overlap with an extra fwd every time we turn it over, surely a defender is not where he is supposed to be.

Agree with those who are calling for Clurey to be dropped. Not for anything on the weekend, thought he was pretty good on Lynch, but rather team balance. I think there needs to be distinct matchups in order for us to go with the full combination of Doogz, Jonas, Hombsch and Clurey. I know that Jonah and Clurey can play on different sizes but all 4 are still more defensive types and for team balance another player who can offer attack from HB would my preference.

Also ready to see Houston dropped but with Hammer out and Pittard in awful form, not sure we have a decent replacement at the moment. Houston did hit a couple of nice kicks in the second half, but also missed a couple of costly kicks under no pressure that resulted in turnovers in the first. If Houston isn’t going at near 100% kicking efficiency then I am not sure we can play him. He is as bad a 1 on 1 defender as I can remember.
