This was posted by Driver on Hotrods BB and thougth it would be of interset here even thougth its not Footy!
Next Sunday, February 3, South Melbourne host Perth Glory in close to the match of the year in the National Soccer League. What has this got to do with footy or Collingwood you ask? Read on....
The game is likely (assuming decent weather) to attract a sell out crowd of around 15,000 at Bob Jane Stadium. Also back in Perth where Glory is more popular than the Dockers they are champing at the bit for live coverage. Optus does not have any presence in Perth and as Foxtel refuse to carry the C7 stations the Perth people (and Perth advertisers) are starting to badger Channel 7 which has bought and warehoused the TV rights to the NSL.
Now Seven have come up with a plan to shift the game to Colonial where they can use it as a trial to see how they can cover soccer at the stadium they part own but won't have any rights to broadcast footy from after this year. Seven argue that it would be much easier for themt o produce the coverage and beam it live into Perth with all the facilities they have at Colonial than packing it all up and taking it down to BJS. They can't use the Optus feed at the ground because they simply can't take that signal into Perth.
So far Souths have resisted but with a week to go things may well happen to sweeten the deal for South. I imagine that if the game is transfered to Colonial and with very little else on next weekend in Melbourne you could expect the 15,000 that would have gone to Bob Jane plus 5,000 other soccer fans plus I would say 5,000 extra theatre goers including the box and medallion holders who are already complaining they are not getting enough events at Colonial.
The game would rate 20 plus in Perth easily and the scene will start being set for the sort of coverage they might give NSL from 2001/2002 season next October. And they are paying only $2 million a year for it with 7 years left on their contract!
Seven have baulked at showing all of the Ansett Cup but are prepared to host this one off soccer game to draw 25,000 people, high ratings and say 'up yours Jackson'. So with the Ashes series also on 7 what can we expect? This is particularly important as we have 10 Saturday night games this year and many of them will clash with Test matches. Time will tell.
