Was it just me, or was Chaplin useless tonight?

Now I usually forgive a bad game comfortably, but it seemed like he couldn't outmark guys half his size, he was slow, he was useless when he had the ball and useless when he didn't. He did get in good positions, but then he'd **** the contest which made the good positioning pointless.

Thoughts?

Still disagree. He did a ****load of useless things. Replace his body with Grimes or Astbury and we don't get any worse IMO based on what he did tonight.

He didn't play his greatest game but as Rusty mentioned once he went off our backline fell apart a little bit. He will get a whole lot better.

I thought he added a lot to the defence. He reads it well, spoils well, and made a few very accomplished plays. He is a quicker than Griffiths and when Dylan comes back the trio including Rance, who was exceptionally good last night, will be the best since Swift, Perry and Burgin (?) of about 1967!

Can only get better...its about team structures these days...he plugged a hole...Chaplain brings valuable experience to our young backline...
Was'nt the best but hey...he plugged a hole...and when he got injured...Carltoon had it a lot easier...

He wasn't too bad. Started the game a bit slow but worked his way into it. Has a good size and provides what we need. Limited preseason etc - I didn't expect him to do much better.

He's better than Astbury. Especially if they were both fully fit.

I really liked him down there, seemed to add another dimension to our back.

And my Dad is arguably the harshest critic ever, he's written off Ellis, Astbury, Dea etc, he was actually impressed by Chaplin.

He made a few small errors, but give him a bit of time to gel into the team and we've got a nice partner for Rance.

I didn't notice him too much which is generally a good thing for key backs. I didn't see any of these famous clangers that Port fans have been telling us about.

The one thing I did notice is that at one or two contests he seemed to have trouble bending over and picking the ball up off the ground.

There's really no way to answer this without sounding like a twat, but you have to have played defence at a high level to appreciate his game last night. Next time you're at a game, watch him when then ball is up our end and they get a fast break, he is in charge of organising everyone.

Dude I am cutting you some slack coz I think you were on the pipe when you posted this..

This is one of those threads when you open it and it's just WTF.
Chaplans composure down back was on of the biggest pluses. As troy said go back and count the goals we leaked when he went off. Leadership down back was our biggest weakness... Rance will get better for it

Your a muppet he was great at least showed composure down there, griffiths is the worry down back for a 200cm giant can't spoil for shit lost every one on one to Hampson just lucky he can't kick

Sorry, i can't agree with OP. He was great structurally for us. Free'd up Rance, and took heat off Griffiths he had his hands full with Hampson. When he went off, it was the Tigers of old a bit defensively. Will be a very good pick up.

Thought he was good without being great. Obviously looked a bit rusty. But our defence improved significantly from having him there. Showed when he went off we lost our way a bit and I remember being pretty worried when he went down with that knock. Only going to get better as he plays more football, but I was pretty impressed. Throw in grimes at the expense of possibly Batchelor? Griffiths? And we're looking quite strong back there.
