Well, we had a chance this year and we didn't take it, does that mean that we fold up our tent and go home?

We have taken enormous strides in the last two years to go from 13th to 6th then to second. I have no reason to believe that the recruitment and coaching staff will take their eyes off the ball now. They have got a lot of things right in the last two years, let's give them the benefit of the doubt for this draft period.

Have faith Cam.

I agree. We have done a lot of things right but this is very competitive and the next couple of weeks are crucial.

Look at what Hawthorn have done over trade week in the past two years.

2012 - Gained Gunston (4 Grand Final Goals)
2013 - Gained Lake - KPD - (16 kicks in Grand Final & Norm Smith medal)

Look at what Fremantle have done over trade period in the past two years.

2012 - Gained Zac Dawson - KPD - (0 kicks in Grand Final & 4 Frees Against)
2013 - Gained Pearce (1 GF Goal)

It looks like the Hawthorn recruiting department has got the points there, in fact they might have made the difference.

That's behind us though. This year so far we have ...

Fremantle - 2014 - Gained Colin Sylvia
Hawthorn - 2014 - _____________________ fill in the blank. It'll be someone.

If Hawthorn gain Chapman they'll nurse him through the season so he's right for the finals, just like Geelong did with Ottens and Hawthorn did with Dew. Who plays a full season anymore anyway.

Hawks went from third in 2011 to second in 2012 and first in 2013.
Fremantle went from thirteenth in 2011 to sixth in 2012 and second in 2013.

Jury's still out for me buddy, we missed a flag by 15 points. A few tweaks...

Anyway, I guess we'll just agree to disagree :)

Sorry mrs Chapman, but while most of our supporters agree Paul has been a great player, we don't see a spot for him at freo next year. Perhaps you could try one of the other boards?

Welcome back sunshine, where you been?

Strong 439th post, good to see you getting back into it after such a break...

Maybe you could ease up just a tad on the rudeness towards Cam, eh?

Sylvia is the slight top up for what ? He's a midfielder who gets 19 possessions a game (in 2013 which is above his career ave of 17). That was an improvement on 2012 when he averaged 17. In which team other than Melbourne, could you even hold your place with those numbers ?

If Sylvia takes anyone's spot it will almost certainly be someone who finds more of the ball than him.

I don't get it. Chapman is one of the greats end of story.

What are you talking about? Did you even look at the statistics of sides? Most have about 5-6 who average above 20 touches, maybe 10-12 who are above 17. Chapman himself only gets about 20 touches the last few years, not much different to Sylvia. With the latter playing in a side that has been routinely smashed.

Sylvia will not "almost certainly" take someone's spot who finds more of the ball. He will easily slot into the side in place of someone who finds less ball than him (e.g. Sutcliffe, Clancee, DeBoer, Suban, Mzungu). The upside is reasonable, being surrounded by good players/coaches for the first time in his career. I would expect Sylvia to be in our top 5-6 average possession winners.

I'm not against getting Chapman, but there is no reason why both Chappy and Sylvia can't work. If they are both in form, they both make and improve our side easily. I'm bewildered why people keep going on about how we have enough players like Sylvia/Chapman. Mid/forward position makes up the bulk of the side, and the more good players and depth we have, the stronger the side is, pretty simple stuff.

I'd hate to see Chapman burn us in a final next year for another contender that is not Geelong. Ignoring Chappy creates a risk that another side could get much stronger. Picking him up is an injury risk, but the most negative outcome is nothing changes with any of the contenders. On that basis, I'd lean to the risk of trying to get him.

At the moment our team is good enough, seriously. Next year though we will need to grab a few guys.

Our recruitment model is restricted to players younger than 28. It precludes any stunts like bringing Stuart Dew out of retirement or recruiting Brian Lake which won the Hawks 2 premierships.

They were good 'stunts'. Both premiership winning recruiting moves that cost Hawthorn very little.

There is something to CamTinley's madness. Many players were shown to be seriously mentally weak in the grand final, and the midfielders don't kick goals.
