New deals for Power youngsters

Second-year players Troy Chaplin and Jacob Surjan have both earned new playing contracts with the Port Adelaide Football Club.

Both players have signed agreements to keep them at the Power for seasons 2006 and 2007.

Surjan made his AFL debut in Round 1 last year but injury limited his second half to the season. The utility player has played three games this year after five in 2004. He faced a tough start to his career – he was overlooked in the national draft but thrown a lifeline by the Power a few months later in the 2004 pre-season draft.

“I’m very happy to sign up for the next couple of years,” Surjan said. “I think it’s a great club here and I hope I can make lots of progress with my football over the next two and a bit years.”

Chaplin, a first round national draft selection, also made his debut in his rookie season last year, playing one game. He has added a further three games this year and is being groomed for a key defensive position.

“I’m really happy to stay here. I want to be someone who stays at the one club, not chopping and changing,” Chaplin said. “I can see that there’ll be some opportunities ahead here and so I’m looking forward to trying to take advantage of them in the next couple of years.”

Power football manager Peter Rohde said both players had long term futures at the club.

“Troy and Jacob both fit our future plans, they have had a small taste in the AFL so far and shown they have a future. They’re important players to our club going forward,” Rohde said.

The Power has signed eight players to new contracts in the past ten weeks. Shaun Burgoyne, Domenic Cassisi, Michael Pettigrew, Toby Thurstans, Peter Burgoyne and Michael Wilson also received new deals recently.
