I pay a bit of money each payday into each of my bills such as gas and electricity so i dont end up with huge bills. The other day I got a gas bill for $50.00 which was okay. It said on the bill that it was an estimated reading, so i checked the meter which was alot lower than their estimate. I rang them and told them the actual reading and they tell me I'm actually $130.00 in the credit!!!!!!!!! They were $180.00 out!!!! Unbelievable. I will be checking every single reading from now on!!

hey folks

I worked for Origin and AGL in Adelaide for a while as a business analyst and some things I've learnt from both, are that quite often the meter reader can't read the meter for various reasons such as locked gate, savage dog, dirty meter. So the reader estimates the read. In your situation I'd say they haven't read the meter correctly for some time and hence have been increasing your bill each time based on past 12 mnths usage and seasonal fluctuations. Sometimes it can work the other way too and people (once it finally gets read) get massive bills they have to pay back.

Now that you've done a "customer read" they'll send someone out to verify it but if you've told the truth, you'll be ahead for a while.

I moved out of a rental place after 2 and a half years and closed the gas account and had a heart attack when I got the worlds biggest letter (every bill for 2 years plus a bunch of credit info) which added up to a $1200 credit!!!

The lazy buggers never took a reading the whole time!
