Yaeh im surprised but ill give the club the benefit of the doubt. Maybe there is a reason for it.

Like the young girls family may wanna be private aboyt it from now on rather than display on a big stage at the MCG that their daughter committed suicide...maybe there are reasons for the club decision

I think it is a fair decision made by the club. If the club allowed the CS to put it on the banner, it sets a precident for anybody who plays a role in the club to be put on the banner when they pass on.

I Agree, the club has done more than enough in supporting the grieving family.

I can understand the dissapointment of the Cheersquad though, as she was a part of it previously.

The right decision was made, but maybe the club could have explained it better to them.

Shame on the GFC.
FFS you must hate the club - all you ever do is post whinges about perceived slights and have digs at the administration.

Pretty much everyone in Geelong and at other clubs have stated their admiration that the club has already gone and beyond what was expected, yet you find a need to say it isn't good enough. Well sorry, the only person around here who is not good enough is you.

They wore black arm bands.

Lingy spoke about it after the game.

They were both great gestures from the club. The banners IMO should be for player milestones and about the Footy Club (sponsers should probably get a mention too).

I was more shocked that the OP is defending the CS.Take a look at previous threads started by the OP and most of them are slagging off the CS.

BTW the correct decision was made.Remember BeyondBlue was on the banner so that's all that was needed.

Sounds like the club acted on the basis of professional advice in line with their responsible and supportive actions all week.

"By coincidence, the match against Hawthorn will be played for the Beyondblue Cup to raise awareness of the national depression initiative chaired by Jeff Kennett, the Hawthorn club president, with which Dr Carr-Gregg is also involved. This is where the tribute to Chanelle Rae will end, as the club and charity seek to push the focus to where they say it belongs, away from one girl's suicide and on to depression...."

Andy Maher should have read that. When interviewing lingy he said how bad cancer is in society

Poor form from the club.

A whole banner dedicated to it might have been a bit much, but nothing wrong with putting a small "R.I.P. Chanelle" across the top of the banner like has been done dozens of times before when other CS members have passed away. Nothing was mentioned then, although this case has attracted more media attention.

But then it sets a precedent that anyone who dies and is involved in the club should get a spot on the banner.

Then it creates a situation where families will complain if they feel their spot on the banner wasn't as big as somebody else's e.t.c.

The unfortunate & tragic circumstances of her death make this a tough situation but I'm of the opinion that the club made the right decision...

Discussion of suicide is routinely avoided in public because it's thought to be 'contagious' to some extent, for want of a better word. You may notice that suicide is frequently reported in the press as being a death "with no suspicious circumstances", for the simple - and terribly sad - reason that people who are suffering from severe depression find validation of their own impulses in the suicide of others.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the club had been actively warned not to put her name prominently on the banner, and - as somebody else pointed out - to promote the fight against depression in its place.

It's a horrible story, and I'm sure the club is trying to do everything they can to support her family and the broader cause.

It was the right decision to not make direct reference to it on the banner. The focus on on raising awareness of/preventing depression - that was always going to be the focus of yesterday given we were playing for the BeyondBlue cup and the week's sad events just made the point hit home even more.

That said, it was nice to see the lovely tribute banner in the cheersquad.

Oh, and what a flog Andrew Maher is. Post-match, presenting the cup to Ling...

Maher: "Well done on winning the BeyondBlue cup. Cancer is a big problem in our society, isn't it?"
Ling: "Yes, depression is a huge problem, I knew what you meant."
