Who thinks that Luke McPharlin is the man for the job. He's been excellent at CHB this year. But we have at least 3 other players that would be serviceable in this position. Given his athletism and marking ability few could look past him for CHF.

He played there for a while against St. Kilda and didn't look out of place. Any thoughts ppl?

Our spine in 2005 =

Haddrill
Polak/Pavlich
JLo/Sandi
McPharlin
Simmonds (Murphy can do his apprenticeship in the forward pocket for a year or two)

I still think Pav is the man for CHF. I know he struggled there a bit this year but he barely got a chance to settle in there. Just watching some games from 2001, he was excellent when playing forward. Even in 2003, he looked really dangerous up forward. If he could settle down there, I think he is the man for the job. If not, then McPharlin could be worth a shot there...

The spine of a team usually consists of the following:
FB, CHB, C, CHF, FF

You've got R instead of C there?

Whichever of these two, or Polak, is decided on, must be left in the position all year to be given the chance to learn how to play the position and develop.

The word is Whitnall will be your new CHF, if you can squeeze him into your Salary Cap.

I would say it would be more of a problem trying to squeeze him into the team uniform..

The problem is his man-boobs would be accentuated with the anchor down the middle and around each one... no "lift and separate" there... :D

Could always design a mansere with lots of little anchors on it for him.

I want Pav to play CHF, but I'm not holding my breath because we need him as a midfielder for the moment (according to CC). I'm actually worried that he'll get stuck playing there and become lost amongst all the other decent midfielders. As for McPharlap, wouldn't be a bad move and Polak looks more settled as a backman anyway.

CHF and FF are both an "issue". Troy Simmonds is not a FF. Another possibility:

Haddrill
Polly
Hase
Pav
McPharlin

McPharlin is such a good mark and kick that maybe FF might be worth a shot. Although I think that we would probably need either Pav or McPharlin somweher around the defensive 50, as while Polly is an awesome mark, has a tonne of courage and stops a lot of forward forays, his decision making and rebound are nowhere near as quick as McPharlin or Pav's.
However, with Haddrill, Polly, Thornton down back we have some pretty handy defenders - then with Parker, Hayden, Woods, Gilmore and Mundy still to come in, that may be covered quite comfortably.
Whatever happens, I think CC needs to experiment a little during the pre-season, then choose a combination and stick with it for the first 5-6 weeks to let them gel. Murphy for FP while he learns a bit, bulks up and gets some confidence to play at AFL level...
And as good as Haddrill is... does anyone think he's a little short? Just wondering.

:) Of course, he'd have to wait in line behind Connolly..

Personally, I think the ideal Fremantle forward structure next year is

HF:Pavlich McPharlin Headland
FF:Medhurst Murphy Farmer

-That's dependent on a few things, like Polak being able to handle CHB, Simmonds being traded for one of Stenglein/Carr to allow Pavlich to be freed up out of the midfield. Longmuir to rest in the pocket when he isn't rucking, and Matthew Carr to be rotated forward on the flanks as well. I don't think Pavlich is the best prospect for CHF- either play him at CHB or if Polak can handle that rotate him forward and play him on the flanks- if he's allowed to just move freely around the forward half, he'd create a lot of mismatches.

I think McPharlin is by far the best prospect at CHF and frankly he's wasted a bit in defence- if he's going to take a ridiculous number of marks each week, wouldn't it be best if he was doing them within range of goal? In terms of damaging the opposition, a contested mark in the forward line >>>> one in the defensive half.

imo, the best thing for fremantle would be to play McPharlin at CHF and Murphy at FF for the best part of the year- find out for sure whether or not they can handle those positions and get the team used to playing with them there.

Pav - McPharlin - Farmer
Medhurst - Whitnall - Murphy

Don't mind the look of that at all...

I think Haddrill is a little short for FB, but he's doing a damn good job compensating for it. Hay would be a nice aquisition but what are the chances of getting hay, carr, whitnall, stenglein or even 2-3 of them. I think 1 is almost guarenteed to be in our team, maximum 2.

Yep, I like the look of what Mead is saying.

Im pretty sure murphy won't be holding down FF by next year. A little early in his development. FF's typically don't star until the 3rd or 4th year in there career.

I'd imagine he'll get some time there next year. Probably in the pocket then occasionally at FF. Depending on mismatches.

If we got Hay from Hawthorn, he could free Haddrill for CHB. Apparently CC believes that CHB is Haddrills true position.

Though if we managed to get Hay, our list would be star-studded in the talls department. At least one would be traded away.

With all these possibilities CC is going to have to make a decision and stick to it. A player should be able to prepare all summer knowing next year my position is CHF, or CHB, or FF.

If Pav were to prepare for a key position, his running capacity would be downgraded and his shoulder strength improved. If the decision were left to early next year, it may be a problem.

Also on the matter of losing run from defence if McPharlin goes forward. Apparently Des Headland will be playing more time as a HBF next year according to CC. This is where he was most damaging at the lions. Our halfback line might look something like the following

Thornton Polak Headland.

I think Thornton and Headland may provide enough run out of the backline. Throw in Hayden from the back pocket and things are looking rosy.

My perfect 2005 line-up:

B: Hayden Haddrill Parker
HB: Thornton Polak Headland
C: Schammer J. Carr Stenglein
HF: M. Carr Pavlich Webster
FF: Murphy McPharlin Farmer
R: JLo Hazelby Bell

Extended Interchange:
Sandilands, Cook, Dunn, McManus, Mundy, Siegert, Gilmore

Note that either McPharlin or Pav can move up the ground and Murphy can move into FF for some periods. Basically want those 3 as the major focal points up front. When one of them is on the bench either ruckman can sit in the forward line. Basically want 3 talls forward all the time.

J. Carr and Stenglein?

Don't underestimate the Colonel. In 2001 he went shopping for Macpharlap and came home with Snake, The Wiz & Croadie as well. :D
I think everyone's wised up a little bit now when trading with Freo.

Heard on ch9 that the Crows want Kerr or Cox in exchange for Stenglein and we all know that won't happen. So we could be in line with a trade deal. Possibly Simmo? But who would that leave in order to get Carr?
