Williams would be a very good addition to our coaching ranks but not as head honcho, It's Ross Lyon for me, Williams and Lyon would shake the place up quickly and put us back in contention
Lyon has never succesfully rebuilt a list, at Freo ,were our boy now seems to be doing a good job
At Stkilda Grant Thomas rebuilt there list.
I like the idea of Williams or even Thomas they would give kids a game and they would shake the place up.
Get one of them in now! maybe on a short term contract until the end of 2022
My first preferance would be Longmire or Bevridge which is pretty much mission impossible at the moment.

Grant Thomas?

Change in Melbourne more attributable to Adem Yze. Williams is well past it.

Thomas coached at a certain club in 94. It was mutually agreed he wouldn’t continue. 6 straight flags later no one was missing Thommo.

thomas coached stkilda around about 5 years, aprox from 02-07 he rebuilt Stkilda from the ground up had no issues making the hard calls.
Saints had a pretty youthfall and good side, he mainly went to the draft and tried kids out to plug holes .
He got sacked becouse there was a big fallout between him and there president at the time butters.
Ross Lyon took over made a couple of g.f due to G.T hard work and rebuilding rather then any work he did.
Wouldnt mind giving him just a crack for a year or 2, we could do worse we could keep Buckley

Thomas has been nowhere near footy for over a decade. It is sheer fantasy to think of him as a coach. And he sucked. As far as his judgment of sideswipe went!

Edit: other well and not so well-credentialed coaches may have held a similar view. If they devoted more than a few seconds to consideration of the matter!

You base your opinion on what? the players played for him he rebuilt the saints from nothing going to the draft you really havent got much of an idea in regards to Thomas.
Do you want credentials and certificate 4 coaches like who? like Buckley the most unsucessfull coach in the present afl system that has coached for 6 or 7 years or more.
There was another coach that had not been around for over a decade but had the right attributes Hawthorn took a punt with him his name was Alan Jeans how about you check and see how that worked out.

My opinion is first-hand experience being coached by him. But not selected as I would have liked. He had no idea!

Edit: but in seriousness he may have been a decent coach once but he is a million miles from it now.

Did brilliant things at Richmond and Dusty gives him a lot of credit for the player he is . Now at Melbourne and they love him and made a massive difference. A Collingwood great I think he would be a great coach. Thoughts
Great idea, I loved watching him play, tough, great coach, would command great respect ✊

Wouldn't mind him as an assistant, but am suspicious given nobody else has given him a head coaching gig. Would certainly provide a different voice to our current crop
He coached Port Adelaide to a premiership !!! Great Collingwood player, excellent coach!! We treated him like dirt too!

He certainly did, can’t take that from him. Just dunno if he’s head coach material. Would be perfectly happy to bring him in as an assistant though!

Gameplan/strategy is Yze's go....but the effort and attack on the player and the ball is pure Chocco getting in a few boy's ears.
He has a way of making players think they're a lot better than they've ever been. He's a motivator. Old school snake oil? Maybe...but he's done it at a lot of places with some pretty impressive results.

As a development coach yes. He’s no longer up to the main job. Would be pure madness.

Also, don’t get too carried away with Melbourne. Their soft underbelly will show itself soon enough.

If its ok, I'll agree to disagree. "He's no longer the man for the job" is like saying Chris Fagen can't coach. Chocco is a leader of men and would certainly shake the place (and the playing list)up.

Just for the record, I'm hoping we can somehow snag Clarko, but if not, for mine Chocco shapes as a coach with the right instincts and character traits to provide CFC with the right values to quickly recover our mojo. And as previously stated I don't think Mark Williams would seek long term employment (Clubs tend to get sick of him telling them what to do after a couple of years!!) But for a short burst of positive action that would then be reinforced by a younger/ more savvy long term coach (perhaps a Mitchell or a Giansiracusa/Caracella) then Williams would be fantastic.

We desperately need a whole coaching group re-fit. Since Gary Hocking left our mids have been re-active, impotent and one paced. Bucks is carrying the can for everything but his assistants have provided very little over a long period of time. Blokes like Clarkson and Chocco would not tolerate the lack of impetus from their assistants.

I'll leave it there J-Mac, I appreciate your point of view but I just can't help thinking that Chocco would be beneficial right about now.

(remember Bobby Rose coming out of retirement to coach again in 1985?....yeah he only lasted a few games, but he allowed us to grab hold of a young up and coming coach who did ok....Lethal Leigh came to the Pies!)

My feeling is Buckley will call time on his coaching this year though will likely coach out the year ... with wright now in charge I have sneaky suspicion there will be a hawks assistant offered the job ( Sam Mitchell ) ... ideally with a say Ross Lyon type as mentor ....

Who do you think Hawthorn would rather lose......Mitchell or Clarkson?
