You've got to wonder though, after New Zealand were being so security conscious about not playing in Kenya yet they can go out partying to all hours of the morning amongst people whose country they have just potentially put out of the World Cup. A bit silly if you ask me.

Someones really going to get hurt in an incident like this one day, either that or some drunk is going to be kicking practice for some footy/rugby guy 3 times his size. Unfortunately it may only be a matter of time until a national profile sportsman ends up in a stae similar to what former West Coast Eagle and Port Maggie Robbie West went through a few years ago, having to undergo rehab to relearn most of his motor skills after a very vicious attack by people unknown in a hotel carpark, or heaven forbid something worse.

It wasnt people unknown. The guy who did it got caught. He lives in Edwardstown. I cant remember what he got for it, but he got a pretty hefty verdict from memory. He beat Robbie West into a coma in an alley way behind the Crown hotel in Victor Harbour. I think it was a month after we won the premiership, and he won the club BnF. But yeah he got put in a coma...he came back two eyars later but was never the same player.

My bad Macca, i couldn't remember all the aftermath with it being a few yrs ago now. Not wrong about sth Africa either, gets a bit like Sth central LA if you believe everything you read.

Robbie West used to play for West Perth in the WAFL and I had the chance to meet him in his Sandover Medal winning year. Is he still involved with football over in South Australia these days?

From my memory it was West who started it and the guy ( a student) was only sticking up for himself and gave West a flogging . West was given a premiership medallion even though he never played in the team on GF day.

If anyone has spent anytime in SAf, the fact that he is still alive is a miracle in itself. Especially brawling at street level. Fool.

Why he would go out drinking with Ty Zantuck in the first place is a mystery to me Knuckles ....

West started it, gave up, but the guy kept beating into him after West was on the floor knocked out - a real sign of a tosser. He got his own back anyway.

the guy wasnt a student tho - he was in his mid 20s.

West played in the 95 premiership, and was probably 2nd best on ground that day. He then got beaten up, missed the entire 96 season, and George Fiacchi gave him his medal.

He came back and played in 1997, but was nowhere near as good as he was.

totally agree, what a ********. One one hand they are bitching abot secuirity then they go out boozing the night after they beat SAF. Wonder about the furore if it had been an Australian team. Just wondering NZ arent black are they and is Clive "he only said White " Lloyd isnt lurking ???????

Chris Cairns was reportedly out celebrating the birth of his child. REmind me not to have a drink when my missus has a baby. Yup, they needed to be a bit smarter about it, but hey - the guy's got a child he should be able to celebrate the occasion. What I want to know is where the frig were these crack security teams that have been assigned to the teams to prevent this happening. They were around to take that team away - but not when really needed.

Also while we're on assaults - no one's mentioned the Greg Matthews nightclub incident.

BTW - the bloke who assaulted Robbie West - his name was Darren Ellis.

Funny about that - let's paraphrase.
Suzi Olsen is known as a troublemaker on Big Footy, which is a bit of a shame. She's worses when she talks about a subject she knows nothing about.
