Re: Chris Johnson - weak as piss ...

like most dees members, i was excited by cj's arrival - we haven't had many father-son selections, and here was the son of a gun.

he was highly rated, but alarm bells immediately started ringing when it was discovered he never played colts football in wa, but instead played as that 'roaming forward / on-baller' for his private school, where he of course did well...but suffered from injuries.

when he debuted, against west coast in wa, he looked smooth and ran the lines well. soon he had a rotten run with injuries, but he kept coming back and getting further goes, despite some obvious limitations coming to the fore - firstly, he's not the bravest footballer in the world, and is usually eager to avoid the 'hits' that come along with playing football. secondly, he tends to be quite injury-prone, at least during his time with melbourne. but we have some severe issues to deal with in that regard, as too many players go down with soft tissue injuries on a regular basis (see bohdan's time at hawthorn).

but the big third reason why i wasn't too disappointed to see the back of him was in evidence in 2007 against st. kilda at the docklands. he got the ball on the back flank and took off. so far, so good. but the saints came at him hard, and he couldn't get on to his left foot and had to go on his right; he was under moderate pressure and it went straight up in the air and about 10 metres forward.

after that i started watching his disposal - on the left under little or no pressure he looks a million dollars. under pressure he tends to tense up and miss targets. and on the right? well, he has no right side. it's abysmal. and because most coaches have worked that out, they pressure him relentlessly, and rely on him turning it over.

he won't be at carlton in 3 years time if carlton are any good.

Re: Chris Johnson - weak as piss ...

and as far as Anderson is concerned..FORGET IT, this guy is hopeless, bad skills, bad decision making, panics under pressure! The only upside to Joey is his courage

people said the same thing about Grigg before he got some consistant game time and improved!!!

Ando will be in the team soon enough!!!

Re: Chris Johnson - weak as piss ...

I see him in our 20-30 list, will get games, will miss games.

He has only played 30 odd AFL games and still has a fair way to go at this level. Has a lot to offer, but will frustrate at times. Sounds likes a player picked at 80 odd, who has played about 30 games.

His kicking is mostly elite and is usually the right option, with time on the ball he can put it into space as good as anyone.

Defensively he has work to do, that's all up to him and the coaching staff to get in order, see what happens. Sydney would not be the best ground for CJ to play on.

After watching Thornton/Waite butcher the ball at times, have no problem with CJ as a general rule.

Nothing like experience to improve a player, he needs time on ground and the chance to get used to playing in a new team. Go easy guys, he has a long way to go.

Re: Chris Johnson - weak as piss ...

Thats why Melbourne de-listed him, because he is a shit footballer, its just normal for carlton supporters to talk up a player that isnt wanted at any other club! like the acklands, hadleys, clokes, and the sad thing is there all playing in ur 22... wake up carlton, ya have potential but ruining it by playing duds

Re: Chris Johnson - weak as piss ...

I'm still on the fence with Johnson. His kicking is ok, but any sign of pressure and he turns the ball over. Given that we have Scotland and Browne playing well with the Bullants, then maybe it's time to bring both these guys in, given that they use the ball just as well, if not better, than Johnson.

My other thought would be to push up him up the ground, and play him on the wing, where there is slightly less pressure on him keeping his opponent in check.

Fair comments and I appreciate a Melbourne Supporter who is able to come and post with some sense. I understand Melbourne supporters are dirty on CJ for leaving and I would be too. At the end of the day we got him for nothing and if he doesn't work out, it is not a huge loss.

And Filth supporters don't talk up their own players?

Ackland is no longer on Carlton's list.

Re: Chris Johnson - weak as piss ...

I'm sorry but I really can't help but laugh at this thread.

It's quite funny how many people dislike this bloke, I'm not a big fan of him myself but In all honesty I don't think he is as bad as alot of people are making him out to be.

I mean sure, he basically sucked at Melbourne and his performance with you guys at the moment really isn't up to par, but can you blame him...really?

This is his first year at a new club, a club he wanted to play for hence one of the reasons he ditched Melbourne in the first place. Now let's not forget being only 4 games in he does have to settle into the side. New team, new environment, new style of gameplay and new teammates.

Carlton are on the rise and their team overall looks pretty good but how long have those guys been there? With alot of guys at your club looking so good, you can't compare Chris to them...yet. Once he settles in he could be anything.

At the moment his game is average but from now till the end of the year anything can happen. I don't like the guy much to be honest but I think he has got potential and given the chance and oppotunity he will become alot greather then most suspect.

Just give it time. :thumbsu:

Oh dear we are getting chastised for overrating our players by an illiterate feral :o
I just wish we could recruit like Colonwood, Cam Wood and Chris Bryant are setting the world on fire ;)

ackland - gone
hadley - now fit and firing
cloke - twice the player he ever was at Laxative Central

top call :thumbsu:

Get your facts right. Was never delisted. Left voluntarily. They wanted to keep him.: thumbsd:

Re: Chris Johnson - weak as piss ...

I can't believe Johnson is getting bagged here. Did anyone actually watch the game?
Bret Thornton is our problem. Three spaso kicks resulted in 3 goals. He kicks the ball with one hand in the air like a ballerina.
He cost us the game against Essendon and now the Swans and he getting away with it scott free.......!!!
Have a look at the replay. 2nd quarter guys.

Also why since Stevens has come back that we have lost 2 games ?
We need Judd, Gibbs, Murphy and Hadley back in the guts.

Wow, player bashing has reached a new level... Bit hard to watch the game over the lip of a beer can, I guess.

Re: Chris Johnson - weak as piss ...

Well we all said he was an average player, and we had Carlton supporters telling us 'We'll get the best out of him, your club is shit and couldn't do that' etc etc.

Hate to say we told you so.

Re: Chris Johnson - weak as piss ...

These threads should be recommended as mandatory reading for anybody new to BF - then they'd be able to see straight away who the ignorant flogs are and whose opinions are worth taking note of.

You people calling for the hanging of a bloke after his FOURTH GAME AT OUR CLUB should go buy a Richmond membership. You make us genuine Carlton supporters look bad.

Re: Chris Johnson - weak as piss ...

I actually thought Thornton was pretty damn good this week, much better then the fiasco against Essendon, put his body on the line and took some very good (and contested) marks ...

But Johnson, my god, he is so soft, he wouldn't get a game with the Melbourne Vixen Netball club ... His disposal leaves a lot to be desired as well.
Will be playing for Preston this week.

You'll understand if we don't take advice from supporters of a club that's last premiership cup is older than

How long have opinions on Bigfooty contributed to Grand Final success Thy, your not being half as clever as you think you are being.

Agree 100%. In future I'll restrict myself to Mensa quality input like "I told you so". :thumbsu:

Re: Chris Johnson - weak as piss ...

'Hate to say I told you so' is a pretty common cliche. I'm sure you can handle it, Chris Johnson on the other hand...

Fail to see the cliché relevancy. You might want to concentrate on packing the woollies for your upcoming eternal winter. Gotta be a ski-lodge cliche in there somewhere you think?

So why then was Bailey/Melbourne filthy too loose him?
