Sorry to intrude, but this thread has reminded me that Blake is still the worst around-the-ground player I have ever seen on a football field.

The fact that he stayed on a list so long and at the expense of a former captain and club servant in King was one of the great footballing tragedies of the 2000s.

No hyperbole.

Hmmmm. Hard to argue against what you say

I think it's very easy to argue against either actually.
Said tongue in cheek....but I struggle to think of another more inept around the ground footballer. I remember his first goal at Simonds Stadium. Very awkward and 50:50 to miss. You don't get ironic cheers from a faithful crowd for no reason.

The club's mistake, in hindsight, was keeping Blake and letting Mumford go. I do appreciate King had nothing to do with this

Fair enough. All I'll say is take a look at Dawson Simpson's possession averages before Blake is held up as the ne plus ultra of crapness.

No offence dude but that is a pretty classic case of subsequent events influencing memories. He didn't look like missing either and they weren't ironic cheers.

its fair to say the Blake played within his talent, he didn't try to do things he wasn't capable of delivering which I guess is another way of saying he had good decision making abilities.

Pretty much. He knew his limitations. It is remarkable how happily people are to slag off a premiership ruckman. It's not like we've had that many of them.

He played 99 more games than all of us put together….

GO Catters

Youre right!

Blakey has been gone for yonks For someone who was an average player the attention he gets here is mystifying.

I certainly recall him getting ironic cheers from time to time when he rarely kicked the ball.

I just watched two games with Blakey in them - one was against Richmond Round 6 2007 - you know the one that was a record highest score ever kicked against them (222 points). To be honest he looked ok and even had a few kicks and quite a few good taps. The other game he looked ok as well. Not great but ok.

When teamed with Ottens and no sub rule - he was ok. To say he was the worst ever player to play AFL is a huge statement and I think a bit over stated IMO.

Reasons for that were that our method of play was kamikaze, and Blake was instructed most times to be a link player for our devastating mids, and that he was. Far quicker for him to handball than kicking in many of our passages of play.
Since he has left Geelong and played as a workhorse #1 ruck around the country, where he has won best and fairests, he certainly has had his fair share of kicks.
Yep, I research his progress, up to end 2014 anyway.

Who said he was the worst player ever to play AFL?

Sorry SC - I misread your post - you state he was the worst around the ground player you ever saw. He was not great that is for sure but I think for a guy who racked up 99 senior games - there must have been something the club liked enough to keep playing him.

I think the final straw for many of us when he could not follow Gardiner down to goal square where Gardiner kicked the goal that won the game for the Saints - in the best H&A I have ever seen.

But it turned out ok we won the flag that year and Blake was in the team if I remember correctly.

IN the team, and more than held his own v both King and Gardiner , particularly in that vital last Q.

There's a reason that post was there.

What starts with 'T' and lives under a bridge?
