Chris Tarrant

Did anyone else hear Bon discussing him on AFL Insider last night?

From memory, the subject of Chris Tarrant's imminent return to Melbourne was raised, as was the fact there are a few clubs in the running for his services. Bon was firstly asked about his value to a potential suitor.

He couldn't have been more glowing in his praise for Taz Snr, labelling him an All Australian CHB, aged 30, with at least two good years at that level ahead of him (in his opinion).

One of the other guys on the show raised the fact that we'd have to be in the running, even though we hadn't been mentioned in the press, as we too are one of the up and coming sides alongside Melbourne and Richmond (who had been mentioned). Bon said "I reckon his brother Robbie would love to line up alongside his older brother in the same team for the next couple of years", which reminded the others of the family connection and raised us as a very likely club for Chris to nominate as his preferred destination.

Bon was then asked "What would it take to get a deal done?"

"A like for like swap. When fit he's the best CHB in the competition and I suspect Freo would seek someone similar to satisfy them in any trade", he said.

Bon said we are interested.

The guys then joked that he had his poker face on and he was trying to ensure whoever did court Taz Snr would be paying the highest possible price to get him. Bon laughed.........after holding his serious facey thingy for a few seconds more.

I didn't know whether he was serious or not but I suspect he was.

Can see a good side to this depending on what we have to give up. Downside is he has two years to go and is injury prone. Good luck to Chris - the way he has reinvented his career is a credit to him and Freo.

Like for like? Robbie Tarrant!

Seriously though, I'm not sure about the wisdom of us trading for a guy with 2 years in him even if he has been terrific for Freo since moving to defence.

I'm not sure how much Robbie would actually enjoy Chris being there given the fact that he would be taking CHB. The place in the team that Robbie would be targeting himself.

we'd be better of gambling on Andrew Krakouer,27, a bit more pace around the midfield etc

So Tarrant is in the right age bracket, but Fev isn't?- I know who I'd rather take a punt on! Surely we aren't really interested in bloody Tarrant!

Trade for the older Tarrant so he can keep the younger Tarrant out of the side?

Seems a little silly to me.

lol, I really hope not.

I heard Brad Scott on radio the other day saying we are not interested in any 29 year olds when they were talking about Fevola.

Admittedly, I wasn't listening intently last night. From memory however, I got the impression that Brad wasn't entirely serious about Tarrant making a move to Arden St.

I felt as though, he was merely making the point that just because he is aged 30, any club would still have to give exceptable compensation for what is a currently good footballer.

I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot of Robbie next year. If he didn't injure his thumb this year, Brad said he would have been given atleast 6-8 games to prove himself. Having Chris would only prevent Robbie from getting a decent crack at the top level.

I'd take him if he was willing to be on a fairly small contract. That'd be awesome depth. It'd give Taz Jnr a bit of time to play in the VFL, Taz Snr to allow Grima full back and Thompson 3rd tall. I guess it all hinges on Taz Jnr's development at CHB.

Toes, I watched it mate and I didn't seem to think that Scott was being serious about going after Chris Tarrant.

I felt that Scott was more interested in inflating Tarrant's value.

This would upset Onip because of his latent Collingwood love and thus his wish to have Chris Tarrant at North, but that's just how I viewed it. :stern look

I'd be very very surprised if we'd give up anything for a player with 2 years left in him. Maybe if he was freely available in the PSD for example, you could mount a case such as he would allow Grima and Thompson to develop nicely under him, etc, but surely not in a trade that would cost anything of value? Unless they want Josh Smith...

That was my take as well.

I would be very surprised if we were keen to get Chris as it flies in the face of our recent youth policy and the fact that we are probably 3 years away at best from a genuine crack at the flag. I think he would be finished by then.

But then again there might be other reasons such as the need to keep Robbie happy and maybe Brad thinks we are closer than we do.

I'd be all for it, couldn't hurt and it would be insurance for Grima, Thompson etc, Robbie would grow a foot having his brother around the club, the club gets a high profile name which we probably haven't had since Laidley started, the last one I can remember is Colbert, and he's been staunch North ever since.

Wouldn't expect he'd be expensive, and if its true that delisted players are still tradeable Josh Smith would be a perfect swap, he goes back home and gets another chance in the AFL, win /win and I hate that term.

I don't think that is quite correct. Officially delistings don't occur till end of October so any trades can occur in trade week which is in early October.

Would any club accept a delisted (official or unofficial) player as part of a trade when they can get him through the PSD or Rookie drafts?

I doubt it will happen. Look what happened when we finally got Jade Rawlings, we got nothing out of him.

Brady's been good since then though.

Interesting.

I wonder if the thought is that having Chris then frees up Robbie to be developed for the position he was drafted for; as a CHF.

If Hale goes, Drew and Maj are the back up Rucks with Taz and Lachie as CHB/CHF options & Black the pure forward. Leaves the KP stocks lookind a lot more versatile if the shit hits the fan and we are pumelled with injuries.

Just musing though and honestly I would be surprised if it actually happened.

Umm..We got Swallow and the Dogs got Travis Baird (delisted 2007) with the exchange in picks

In: Jade Rawlings and draft pick #43 (Andrew Swallow)
Out: Draft pick #46 to Western Bulldogs

The point I am trying to make is they can be traded and the club might help Josh get to a club of his choice for a pick they wont use. It's been done before, when we got Davies from Collingwood.
