Phantom Draft Chris25's Post Trade Week Effort

We don't need any more Jacobs types. Granted he is a good player who reads the game well and has a great boot on him, but we have a list full of HBF/HFF types. We need genuine midfielders, preferably with some real zip or class.

Prestia, Guthrie or Smith come to mind as realistic prospects.

I think Jacobs is just as good a midfield prospect as any of those players. Had he actually played more as a midfielder this season, he would probably be higher in my ratings.

While speed is an issue for Adelaide, so is foot skills (like a lot of teams) and that wont be helped by drafting someone like Smith. Can always get pace later on, but someone with the foot skills of Jacobs might not be as likely.

Does he have any genuine speed though? In Thompson, Sloane, Reilly, Vince etc, we have plenty who can get their own ball. And Smith seems like more of an outside mid, which is something we have lacked for a while. Tambling helps, but I see him playing more off the HBF/wing.

Smith is more inside than outside. He is closer to a Dangerfield than he is to a McKay.

Excellent first 5 yards but wouldn't say he is the quick outside mid you would really like. That being said, wouldn't surprise me one bit if you guys pick smith. Quality pick at that range.

With the first list lodgement date having come and gone, I've updated my draft with what I think is the correct draft order. And I've included all the rookie upgrades too.

The big movers were Brodie Smith (reluctantly), Isaac Smith, Anton Hamp, Angus Litherland, Ben Brown and Jake Batchelor. Nathan Ahmat-Watkins and Warrick Andreoli were probably the two who dropped the furthest.

i do like your updated picks for brisbane but i think you can have gone to tall for them sure they need a few talls but either litherland or cook for me not both

but i do suppose getting gaff does make up for taking 2 talls :D:thumbsu:

Being so close to the actual draft, I'm not going to bother updating my order anymore. But I do have one more thing to add. I posted my top 50 on the Fremantle board, so I might as well do so here too....

And for anyone wondering, the gaps are there for a reason. Because the draft pool is so open, it's easier to just put the draftees into groups. Oh and Bulldog fans, don't worry I deliberately left out Wallis and Liberatore. If they were seriously up for the taking, they would have been in the 15-25 range.

47. George Horlin-Smith
48. Matthew Rankine
49. Justin Monaco

If Sydney picked up these guys I would be a very happy camper, mind you I rather get Reid as preselected NSW Rookie.

21. Sydney - Sebastian Tape - 189cm defender
39. Sydney - Dion Prestia - 175cm midfielder
56. Sydney - Aaron Mullett - 183cm midfielder
72. Sydney - Ben Reid - 181cm forward

Figured I'd just throw together a couple of rounds. Most of these guys have been talked about over the past month or two, so I wont go into much detail.

1 GWS - Myles Sewell (midfielder)
2 GWS - Ed Curnow (midfielder)
3 GWS - Jason Laycock (ruckman)
4 GWS - Jay Neagle (lump of a forward)
5 GWS - Tim Milera (small forward)
6 GWS - David Kruse (tall defender)
7 GWS - Aaron Mullett (midfielder)
8 GWS - Jimmi Savage (tall forward)

Bit of everything for the Giants, including two ready made midfielders. Sheedy shows his influence by not only taking the two former Bombers, but also Savage who is definitely a Sheedy player. Mullett, Kruse and Milera are just good young prospects.

9 Gold Coast - Matthew Rankine (small forward)
10 West Coast - Warrick Andreoli (midfielder)
11 Richmond - Charlie Riewoldt (medium forward)
12 Essendon - Nathan Batley (small defender)
13 Brisbane - Josh Walker (tall forward)
14 Melbourne - Michael Hibberd (midfielder/half back)
15 Adelaide - Max Otten (half back)
16 Port Adelaide - Jake von Bertouch (tall forward)
17 North Melbourne - Matthew Outridge (midfielder)
18 Carlton - Dan Nicholson (midfielder)
19 Hawthorn - Hayden Yarran (medium forward)
20 Fremantle - Justin Monaco (tall defender)
21 Sydney - Luke Shreeve (small forward)
22 Western Bulldogs - Ben Casley (medium/tall defender)
23 Geelong - Callum Sinclair (ruckman)
24 St Kilda - Adam Marcon (small defender/midfielder)
25 Collingwood - Jack Frost (tall defender)

Most of the first round are just guys who I like but missed out on the national draft. Richmond finally pick somebody that people have heard of, but they did it for marketing not because he is necessarily the best available. Outridge is a solid midfielder from WA who has played in the seniors, should help get the ball out to the likes of Atley and Harper. And Shreeve is a small forward who was on the Suns list, who would pretty much replace Veszpremi at the Swans.

26 Gold Coast - Jamie Solly (tall forward)
27 West Coast - Tim Houlihan (does he have a position yet?)
28 Richmond - Jeremy McGovern (ruckman)
29 Essendon - Darcy Barden (tall forward)
30 Brisbane - Tom Gordon (tall defender)
31 Melbourne - Brad Harvey (midfielder)
32 Adelaide - Gavin Roberts (midfielder)
33 Port Adelaide - Jonathan Giles (ruckman)
34 North Melbourne - Roland Ah Chee (midfielder)
35 Carlton - Andrew Phillips (ruckman)
36 Hawthorn - Leif Cope (ruckman)
37 Fremantle - Anton Hamp (tall forward)
38 Sydney - Garry Moss (midfielder)
39 Western Bulldogs - Dion Munkara (small forward/friend for Skinner)
40 Geelong - Tyler Chalwell (tall defender)
41 St Kilda - Ben Brown (tall forward/ruckman)
42 Collingwood - Sam Menagola (medium forward/midfielder)

Richmond go back to picking no name players, McGovern is a ruckman from WA who has played primarily in the Colts. Port realise their mistake, and pick Giles back up. While a second former Gold Coast rookie gets a new home, with Ah Chee going to North. Sydney take another former Hawk too, and will probably have the same results as with Kennedy and McGlynn. While WA favourites, Chalwell and Menagola finally get new homes.

laycock has said he wants to go tassie next year
ah chee is on the gold coast list

Nice effort but i don't think Geelong will take a ruckman with their first pick when we already have Ottens, Blake, West, Simpson, Vardy and Bathie.

I think it's quite likely that St Kilda will take a readymade ruckman early on, since we're down three rucks in King, Pattison and McGrath, leaving Gardiner (injury concerns), Koschitzke (second ruckman), McEvoy (still developing) and Stanley (raw).

Giles would fit perfectly on the list to provide the experienced number one ruck option that we need in case of injuries.

Sinclair is more a tall forward that can play ruck. I reckon he is not a bad pick at all considering that Mooney and Pods are getting on. Would probably prefer Walker but in all likelihood he will be gone as he is with this mock.

I agree, but Sinclair's more of a mobile forward who can ruck (think Vardy without the vertical leap) rather than a pure ruck so if Walker is already gone it's a possibility.

Chris, do you really think Chalwell will go that far? Surely your mob would look at him since you could use some talls? If we get him at our second pick I will be so :)

Don't think Chalwell will be on Fremantle's radar. We've got Monaco training with us, and Harvey has said they'll be targeting someone who could push for early game time with our other live pick. Which I think counts out Chalwell.

I still think Chalwell has been very overrated on BigFooty. He'll get taken, and he does have some very impressive parts to his game which will make a team take a chance on him. But I do think playing as an undersized ruckman will hurt his chances. Wouldn't surprise if he was a mid-to-late rookie pick.

Chris I toatally agree that Tyler played as an undersized ruckman, but he was named in the Colts Team of the Year there. Doesnt that prove his versitilty to dominate that position, beat the much taller guys when he was pencilled in at EF as a CHB at the start of the year. A 14.6 beep and combine equalling running leap of 88 cm backs this up.He was named EF's best in the grand final and frankly im surprised he didnt go in the draft.

Thanks for the info re Freo.

I wouldn't think it will...the recruiters know he won't play as a ruck at AFL level so they won't place too much stock on that.

His athleticism, good marking disposal and endurance should see him on the radar of a few clubs that need defenders, including hopefully mine. I would be quite happy at pick 40.

Found this comment a little strange considering the existence of Swallow, Ziebell and Cunnington. And Atley can probably get the ball out so himself! Chuck in Anthony, Wells (if he ever gets himself fit from more than 5 seconds) and some late career cameos from Harvey and North look to have a pretty insane midfield.

I read it as just a description to give you an idea of the type of player Outridge is. It does not necessarily mean he will replace or is better than the players you've mentioned. This is a Rookie Mock after all.

Yeah spot on irel, was just a short description of Outridge because he hadn't been talked about much on here.

And one can never have too much midfield depth. Who cares if you have 5-6 good young guys, if you have nothing backing them up. And considering Sewell and Clifton are training with North, I think they might see it the same way.

Laycock was definately on Sheeds radar but I read in the Sun that he has turned down the offer to focus on getting his body right and spening time with his family in Tassie.

I do think Neagle will be off to GWS.... otherwise we will rookie him.

EFC will take a ruckman pretty early on I reckon...

Chris i saw a while back you thought Gavin Roberts might be a good prospect as a rookie. I really like the look of this fella has real potential i think and a moves a little like Fraser Gehrig in his young days but with better footskills etc i think. He is training with Freo i think according to todays post latest training list.....What are your thoughts on him ta
