Was watching Q and A last night and thought that C Pyne deserves a thread of his own.
Question was asked by a young man who attends a Youth Connections program - (an alternative Year 11 Trade Start class on the Central Coast) would receive on going funding. The answer Pyne gave was ridiculous. Replied by talking about pathways to Uni, College etc., then saying that the previous government only funded for one year. The young man in question would be unlikely to attend Uni, Pyne did not answer his question apart from saying that he would have to wait for Budget night.

Pyne had no understanding of the young mans situation nor did he display any empathy for the plight of many young people who will never go on to higher education. Nor go into an apprenticeship especially manufacturing (dying industry) and few traineeships available.

He is smug and arrogant and I fear for the educations system and our children whilst the Education portfolio is in his hands.

I Know it will never happen, but just once I would like an answer from either party that does not start with ... but the previous government left it in such a mess etc.

Just answer the question please.

Another point he kept referring to was the 2% repayment on Uni fees and the average cost was $16000. I couldn't find this anywhere, this is what I found:

After Gillard's enormous efforts in getting Gonski up, it is disappointing to see. Libs would prefer totally private system so they don't have to wear the consequences of education system decisions.

Had to lol when Pyne - The Leader of the House, didn't know who the deputy speaker was.

Nasty man who doesn't give a toss about anyone who doesn't go to a fancy Catholic private school. Cringeworthy watching him last night.

Leaves me in a difficult position come 2016 whether to put this flog or the FFP hack last on my HoR vote.

I feel bad for you living in his electorate, it stuns me that a majority of the constituents in Sturt, look at that man and think it's OK to vote for him.

I would have thought these TAFE / vocational program's are state responsibilities. As for there being no trade jobs aka Holden/ford/Qantas thank your local greedy union.

hecs or whatever the scheme is now only pays for 25% or less of the actual degree, why should ordinary workers subsidise your arts degree? Lefty logic at its best.

The idea to give the states back education is a good one. Go ski was a sham at best.

You too hey. *supportive hug* It could be worse, at least I have David Pisoni as my local MP. Imagine the poor suckers who have Chrissy as their federal MP and Vicki Chapman, as their state MP, they're being represented by two of the more objectionable people in Australian politics. It's quite an honour/indictment on them.

LOL, yep those greedy unions/Labor again.
Ignore that fact that he was unable to respond to the question of the young man in an understandable manner or not acknowledging his situation.

Even if there was a federal grant for that minuscule scheme it's a bit rough to think pine should have an answer for it off the cuff. Vocational training has had a lot of money wasted in the past.

The fact that you use the word "minuscule" tells me a lot about you. When referring to education programs and if they are a success, nothing is too small or insignificant.

How do you know it's a Success? Most of these initiatives are not. Minuscule is a relevant term if you are dealing in Billions

It is a funding model that will increase funds to underperformance schools without a plan for them to improve. A sham describes it perfectly, that's why the AEU loves it.

Yes, from a government which actually introduced things like the website and metrics such as naplan. You know, the things howard talked about for years but never bothered introducing.

These days the say its a bad idea presumably because they didnt do it, even though they spruiked it for years

So the sum total of the ALP reign was a massive amount of debt and Naplan? When did the libs spruke Naplan by the way?

What does a Naplan tell us anyway? Most public schools are badly run and have bad outcomes and Private education is a far better option?

I think most people knew that any way? What it has done has increased the amount of kids by way of lying and stealth into the better performing public schools. Something the luvies wanted to avoid

Does anybody here believe that a pack of right wing students would have got through Q and A selection process? Of course not. And if there had it there would have been uproar from ABC management and other media outlet like sky news today. Would be talking aboiut it non stop. But the fascist left is untouchable, it seems and coalition too gutless to make it an issue.

The last time I watched Qanda was when Kevin Ruddd was on in the election campaign. I loathe Kevin but I was so disgusted with Tony Jones hostage taking behaviour that I swtiched very early in program and haven't been back since. The ABC has become a shameless disgrace, imo.

Ah the ol' right wing persecution complex.

Never fails to amuse :)

Interesting they tweet out and then show the audience demographic.

Last night's audience:
ABC Q&A @QandA · 20h
In the #QandA audience tonight: COALITION 47%, ALP 38%, GREENS 9%.

So once again Jane you have no real idea of what you are talking about.

Pazza - could very easily have been extreme right wing, not extreme left wing students then? So if they had been right wing students, what would you be saying?
So far you are proving my point.

btw - I - as a one time Labor media apparachik -- have a great practical experience with the ABC over many years and I would confidently say that there is no way in the world that a group of extreme right wing students would get through the ABC checks on a show like Qanda. And if they did, the ABC would be conducting its equivalent of a Royal Commiission.
It's not doing so with this incidcent, is it? Can you explain why?

So don't bother quoting what the ABC says was the audience breakdown and expect me to take it seriously, Pazz. You are just regurging their BS, unless of course they instigate a stringent inquity into how extreme students of the Left got through their selection process..

btw - I don't have any time for Pyne, but he was set up last night in typical Qanda fashion- and it went too far because extremists got the nod to attend. That was the ABC problem, but will they be held to account over it? No way.

Nonsense. Right wing students are regularly in the audience. They are the 19 years olds in the pink Ralph Lauren button down shirts who ask those scripted and faux indignant questions (written at Liberal Party HQ, of course) to labor and green panellists, while exuding their misplaced sense of entitlement.

Secondly, this whole ABC conspiracy is both hypocritical and baseless. Baseless because there are more checks in place on the ABC to deliver political evenness than any other media outlet in Australia (reflected in the make up of the panel on Q and A and in the audience sample). And hypocritical because I never hear your type criticise the rampant and unchecked bias of News, who knowingly wields its monopoly of our media to affect the political process (a reach that goes far beyond the ABC). On the contrary, I assume you are A OK with this 24/7 advertisement for the Coalition.

Finally, as you are so upset about the lunar side of politics being untouchable and undemocratic, I truly hope your were similarly outraged when a bunch of right wing nut jobs decided to enter parliament house not so long ago screaming political chants and wielding signs about the carbon tax.
