http://www.theguardian.com/australi...pective-teachers-face-literacy-numeracy-tests

"National standards were “weakly applied”, the report said, and some programs were not equipping graduates with the content knowledge, evidence-based teaching strategies and skills they needed."

I quite like the ideas presented in this report, surprised that literacy and numeracy were issues, surely that wouldn't be accredited if this was a problem.

However, if like the TAFE system, compliance wasn't the real problem it was the auditing of compliance. For any new policies, strong auditing practices is the key.

I'm not surprised at all. The entry standards for education courses are far too low.

But literacy and numeracy? Surely this should have picked up earlier.

One of the things I didn't like though was Pyne's reference regarding mentoring and to my mind implied that the 'older teachers' were not suitable.
One of the best teachers my granddaughter (aged 10) has had was a teacher in her 50's.

My grandmother was forced to retire at sixty five as a teacher, and was furious about it. She spent all her life teaching little kids (including one Bruce Grobbelar who she said was a vile little boy) to read and write, and was very good at it. The beneficiaries from this, I guess were my brother and I who could both read and write before we started school.

Thats a good thing. Being indoctrinated with political ideologies when in primary school is a bad thing. I've witnessed it first hand (assignment on stolen generationns ffs, told my daughter its a one liner 'Its a myth'). I always set the girls straight when they get home.

How the hell did you come to that conclusion from my post Danny? My gran was a good teacher according to those who were taught by her, nobody has ever mentioned trying to indoctrinated a bunch of five year olds.

I said it was a good thing. Wasn't referring to your grandmother in the rest of the post.

Apologies for misunderstanding.

A more shrill and self entitled man you would struggle to meet. The universities policy is a clear and obvious attempt to reduce access to university to those the born to rule party considers unworthy of getting an education. Reducing the amount of people in university will help out his rich mates who do have the money and resources to graduate. The less graduates means that the value of a degree goes up for those lucky enough to graduate. This at the detriment of a less educated society.

Wait the stolen generation is myth?????

Man, some of the stuff you read on here....

Open up a Uni for dumb people if you want, but that was never the purpose of these institutions.

I've never agreed with the terminology, which is over the top at best and outright false at worst.

Because it wasn't an entire generation which was stolen, was it?

None were. The welfare of the children was first and foremost.

Although, one of the report authors was on radio this morning saying there wasn't a correlation between entry scores for teaching and quality of teaching.
It's not that simple, of course. But it is a contributing factor.
Some of the people becoming teachers at the moment simply aren't up to the standards we should require. But it won't change unless education can be made more attractive to students who would actually make good teachers. Better pay would be a good start.

This is quite disturbing.

Wow what a typically brain dead comment.

Reducing access to university is your answer is it? Only for people of calibre I suppose not for those nasty poor people who should accept their lot in life.

Reducing access for lower socio economic groups is not the answer. People from anywhere and all walks of life should be able to go to university if their hearts are set on it. All these reforms will do is not only deter poorer people from going to university but also to transform our university system into an American style haves and have nots system. If you can afford to pay $100, 000 + for a degree at Harvard then the world is your oyster but if not you have to settle for second best.

What results they get at uni are a whole different matter. Equality of opportunity should be the cornerstones of a fair society, not necessarily equality of outcome.

You should only go to uni if you get the marks to earn it.

Its not a right.
