The Lions have generally gone for some slightly more mature bodies to fill out their list in the past year or two. In Barrett they got a player ready to contribute at AFL level, while Grewar and McInerney were both proven at lower levels. The rest are a mix of size and pace, with some difficult decisions come the end of the season.
Cian Hanley
The younger brother of Pearce, Cian has finally got on the field in his third year after a horror run of injuries. While the skills are still on the improve, Hanley keeps his feet in the contest and has great potential. He'll be back in 2018.
A close friend of both Pearce and Cian Hanley, Rockliff played a supportive hand as the brothers dealt with the toughest moment of their young lives, as Crowell explains.
“Many people would have known about the Cian and Pearce Hanley situation with their younger brother passing away. Tom took a real leadership role there — he was our go-to person in terms of bouncing off ideas related to how we should talk to the players and also a lot of support to the Hanley family. He’s a great fella and he has learnt a lot in the last couple of years.”
BRISBANE have asked the AFL to extend the international rookie rules for Irishman Cian Hanley.
Hanley is hosting Donegal stars Jason McGee and Eoghan Gallagher who are trialling with the Lions but his own future is up in the air.
Brisbane said a severe injury Hanley arrived with, having injured himself in his final Gaelic footy game after agreeing to join the Lions, and then the death of his brother had consumed his time on the rookie list and not provided the club with adequate time to assess his full potential.
Interesting. Can't see anyone else taking him though. Worst case we delist and just take as a Category A rookie?
Unless we win our last two games or win one by 100 points we'll finish behind the Suns. They'd have to use a senior list spot in the draft/PSD then to get him ahead of us which is unlikely.the suns would take him
#11. Cian Hanley
After a couple of years of injury troubles, international rookie Cian Hanley was finally able to take to the field in 2017.
Hanley was strong across halfback in the NEAFL, playing in 16 matches and averaging 13 disposals per game.
His run out of defence helped the Lions out on numerous occasions, and his kicking efficiency and decision-making improved as the year went on.
Hanley kicked his first-ever goal midway through the season, a wonderful hit off his left boot.
Hanley finished the year as a premiership player with the Lions NEAFL side, and will benefit greatly from a full pre-season heading into 2018.
Senior matches: 0, NEAFL matches: 16
