This is how the match review panel assessed the incident:
It was the view of the panel the ball was kicked to Johns, who was leading to take a mark. Johns had left the ground to mark when Pendlebury intercepted the ball. Johns put his hands up to protect himself and contact was made to the Collingwood player.
Johns had his eyes on the ball until the last moment, when he saw Pendlebury coming into his path. Given that Johns was leaving the ground when Pendlebury cut in front of him, it was concluded that contact was unavoidable. No further action was required
