Business & Finance Claiming for tax

Give a man a vegetable he’ll eat for a day. Send him to a low security prison farm, teach him to grow them and he’ll eat for a lifetime. And no longer cheat on his taxes.
I yearn for a simpler life

One of my friends got a letter last year saying that he's claiming significantly higher than other people in comparable jobs, and if he does it again he'll be audited.
I received a similar letter but not a threat of audit. I use an accountant now, haven't had a similar letter in the last two years.

A bit but you can make general claims for a few things for say <$200 total and the ATO won't bother with receipts. The big items obviously need receipts and if you're claiming $1000s on little bits and pieces it will look suss.

With conjugal visits?

I’m youll be able to conjugate without your significant other making the trip down. Save on petrol.

You’re pretty close unless they’ve changed the substantiation rules this year. Basically with work related expenses, you have to be able to substantiate your claims for deductions with written evidence only if the total amount of deductions you are claiming is greater than $300. Every good Accountant should be putting in $300 worth of deductions for everyone even if they don’t need to claim that much, as no receipts are required up to a total of $300.

Don’t rort the system system is my advice, as you will have to pay a penalty, plus interest and can end up with a criminal conviction for fraud.

If you rob a servo, you don't have to pay tax on whatever you take.
try to rob a bank and either way you're not paying for your food or accommodation out of your own money for the next 10 years ;)

I got one too :'(
But it's because I'm legit claiming my uni fees, so I'm fine.

I probably would’ve too if I’d been stuck at Etihad watching that shit for three hours today.
I lodged mine after I left 5 minutes into the third quarter of the debacle on the other side of the country.

Anyone been stung by the ATO?

Worst I've got is a polite letter for lodging a couple of returns at once (had some overseas income one year which pushed past June 30 and I ended up missing the October deadline through laziness but they didn't really care because at the end of it I didn't owe them anything).
