I think it was on Talking Footy last night where Thompson said that if the Cats had had one more senior midfielder on the ground they would have won as he would have led from the front. I have been thinking this for a while as your midfield does not really have a Buckley/Voss/Ricciuto/Cousins/Bell/Crawford older midfielder in it. These are all midfielders who lead by example that are very experienced and also class players. At the moment Geelong has Ling, Bartel and Ablett plus the two Corey's AND KELLY and from this I can only really see Bartel and Ablett moving into this role, but that would still be 3 or 4 years away. I think that if you can target a 28 year old class midfielder in the trade period it wouldn't be a bad thing. If you could pick up this midfielder as well as the key forward you are after then I can't pick a weakness in the team at all as you would have defence, midfield, ruck and forward covered with expeienced players as well as youth in each position.

You're forgetting James Kelly who was having a fantastic year until he broke his leg. Plus there is Moloney and Tenace who look very likely. I think Thompson was hinting at a lack of experience rather than lack of quality.

Interesting idea, especially with Riccardi reaching the end.

Personally i have faith that at least one of Kelly, Ablett or Bartel will reach that superstar status in the not too distant future (talking the next 24 months).

I'm talking about a midfielder with lots of experience who has been in the elite for 4 or 5 years. Bartel and Ablett and also Kelly (I did forget about him) look the most likely but are still 3 or 4 years away from being like Bucks etc.

Maybe if we had a quality key forward youd look at doing that, but at the moment we need to focus most of our energy into getting a forward. Besides its better to watch your kids develop into stars than poach them from other clubs, except when they are tall and kick goals

Ling as the man at the wheel Sat night. He might not be the one with date with the red dress or look like he should be selling Brut33 but hes a commanding footballer. Drafted in 99 it shows that we really dont need a 28 year old coming into our mix, we just have to wait a while until Bartel,GAJ and kelly catch up. Error were made in the ball movement no doubt but what would you expect Moloney and others are years away from matching the finals experience of the Lions.
The one area in the midfield I feel we lack is goals, somebody thats a legit 80m goal man, grab it run boot a long bomb goal. Id like to think both Kelly and Tenace can develop in this area but and mids we bring to club should now be of a goal kicking type or outside mids, quick with great dispossal and goal sense

Ablett can move into that role as of next year. After missing the pre season and the first 5 or 6 rounds of the season he was nowhere near fit. Next year he will be faster and fitter and will consistently show what we only saw glimpses of this season. Last year Judd only showed glimpses and look at this year. Ablett is a year younger than Judd and is more talented.

Now where are the West Coast fans to get stuck into me? :D

Bomber didn't actually say that on Talking Footy. Someone asked the question and Bomber replied by saying that Cameron Ling's a great leader, which he is. It wasn't a lack of leadership, it was probably just ball use and awareness in the end.
