class of 2015 vs 2016?

After what was deemed a soft draft last year, how is the 2016 draft comparing so far?
Is the top end talent better? And is it a deeper draft?

Interesting question. On face value id say 2016 but it's a curious one as I think the 2015 draft is turning out better than even the top recruiters/list managers thought.

Sam Petrevski-Seton , Ben Anisworth, Jordon Galucci or Jonty Scharenberg are all young guns will go in the top 6, in this years draft.
They'll be Jets , AA talents and we should not trade away our pick 1 to 3.
We need to build and expand our top end talent and this years early selections are perfect opportunity.

The general opinion of the professionals was that this crop is a little stronger and deeper than last year's. They used the number of bottom agers who made considerable impacts and the previous U16 Champs as a guideline. Fair enough. I might think so too if I had seen as much as those guys had.
However, it will be years until we truly know the answer to that.

My humble opinion: the 2016 will make an impact earlier, on average. I have a simple reason: the 2016 crop has a higher proportion of quick, skilful midfielders. These guys often make an impact quicker than their taller team mates: the tall guys need time to develop their bodies more.
One or 2 of the squads are looking stronger. WA had a poor year last year at the Champs and contributed few players. They should be more competitive this time around and more WA boys should be coming through.

As for the comparison between the 2014 and 2015 crops, the 2014 crop has not yet met the expectations on it, while the 2015 crop appears to be making more of an early mark. How this will eventuate in the long term is an interesting question, especially as many of the top 2014 kids have had injuries. It will be a while before we have definitive answers with statistical data to back it up.

James El Moussalli
Essendon VFL /Vic Metro (2015)
Inside Midfielder
Height: 189 cm Weight: 88 kg

The best Victorian prospect tag belongs to this kid. Had to have a shoulder reconstruction after a bad fall early last season, he did not get to play in the carnival for Vic Metro. James was overlooked for the draft but has been very impressive when training with the Essendon seniors. He was very close to being put on their list as a top up player. He is an inside midfielder who can can go forward and has showed everyone that he is a top talent and made everyone take note. James' best talent is his ability to hit the scoreboard from the midfield. He is a beast who already looks like an AFL player. Has great endurance and speed, getting sub 3 for the 20m and over 14.5 in the beep last year. I predict he will be the next Michael Barlow. At the end of the 2015 season it was rumored he trained with an AFL club ( I'm not sure who) so don't be surprised if he is a top 30 prospect.

He was one I thought might go. But the problem with last year's type of draft is that there are a LOT of guys who are maybes and not so many certainties.

Statistically you would kind of think given the amount of players and picks the variation between each year is kind of overrated...

Carton would have to consider trading it for 2x top 20 picks. Adelaide offered Brisbane 9 & 13 for their 2 (Schache) and so I'm led to believe it got close to getting done. 2 heads are better than 1 and with no guarantees 2 high end talents may get it done...

I find it exceptionally hard to believe "It got close to getting it done" I'd go as far to say we wouldn't have even entertained the idea.

We've been screaming out for a Forward for years, we wouldn't have past on the opportunity to grab the best in the draft. With the family ties to the club, the willingness to come to the club (minimal Go Home Factor) it would have been a hard sell to anyone, let alone us in our position.

You can say there was no guarantee that the Blues we're going to take Wietering, at the time of the Trade Period, but look at the draft from our prospective. We had 2 highly rated Academy players, we wanted in early before any bids, then out late to match bids. We traded pick 17/21, as these picks were likely to be lost with the academy process, pick 13 would have been in the same category (With Hipwood we would have lost that pick too)

If pick two as it was taken, turns out to be less than a good player, two high picks in hindsight would have been been a much better option. I don't disbelieve that Adeliade looked to move up the draft, The part about us being interested is the hard thing to believe, with all the above considered.

If two picks in the teens have a better chance of success why would Adelaide look to upgrade, but not find anyone willing to to make a trade? Why hasn't there been more examples of teams downgrading in prior drafts?

Drafting and Hindsight really don't go together, percentage says your most likely to have success the higher in the draft you are. You increase your chances of getting a "Franchise" type player, with earlier selections too, this counters the 2 for 1 arguement.

Be nice for Freo and Richmond to get some top picks. Been a while since either club got a good look at uncompromised early picks.

Both lists are lacking in elite talent past the top 6 or so.

The way Fremantle are traveling, I would love to hear what posters would think of them doing something similar, and perhaps pointedly letting letting a chance at Petrevski-Seton go for a shot at Strnadica and Goddard (or other highly rated talls in the first round). Reality is we could use all of those three players.

Josh in a recent interview stated that Carlton didn't even talk to him. He knew and Brisbane knew fairly early on that that's where he would land.

Freo have got to sell out and dig deep into the draft...neale is out I reckon.
