Club leaders appointed

West Coast Eagles champion Ben Cousins will close in on the club record as captain in the highest number of games after he was today appointed skipper for his sixth season.

Cousins has been captain in 104 matches and is approaching the record set by dual premiership skipper John Worsfold (138), who held the mantle for eight seasons and is now the senior coach.

The West Coast Eagles match committee has refined its leadership group for the 2006 season, with another Brownlow medallist, Chris Judd, and dynamic utility player Andrew Embley appointed as Cousins' deputies.

The appointment of Judd and Embley as vice-captains is a departure from the system that operated in the previous two seasons where there were four deputies, with Rowan Jones and Michael Gardiner as part of the group.

"We have refined the structure because we believe Chris and Andrew have advanced greatly in their leadership capacities over the last 12 months, with both players have been identified as potential captains," Worsfold said.

"Obviously Ben has, over a long period of time, demonstrated his abilities as captain of the club and will continue in that capacity. Strong leadership within the playing group is essential and we believe we have that in abundance through Ben, Chris and Andrew.

"While Ben, Chris and Andrew are the club's designated leaders they will naturally receive support from other senior players in the squad."

The match committee made its submission on the composition of the leadership group to the club's board of directors last week and that recommendation was subsequently ratified.

West Coast Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett congratulated Cousins, Judd and Embley on their formal appointments, but added that leadership responsibilities extended well beyond that trio.

"Those three players have outstanding credentials as leaders and have shown the way in the past few seasons," Nisbett said. "But the leadership onus does not fall solely with those players.

"We have an extended leadership group, of which they are the core, and a leadership development group who have been outstanding contributors for some time. Each of those players is continually developing leadership qualities and we believe we have an exceptional group of young men who can assist in taking the club forward."

I like the decisions the club made regarding the leadership group

Also great to see Embley rise within the ranks. Must be a huge wrap for the
bloke considering some of the problems he had early in his career

I thought they might have gone for a defender (Chick perhaps ?) as well but I can't complain about the choices they have made !:thumbsu:

Unlucky Vice Captain omissions.....

Cox (granted maybe if he retains his form for another 1 or 2 years he may get it)
Wirra

I like it... we dont need 4 VC's. That's just too many. Two is enough but I thought Wirrpunda was stiff. He is a top bloke and his maturity, experience and leadership on and off the field is top notch stuff. But I understand the appointments of Embley and Judd.

Well done to Cousins, Judd and Embley.
Unlucky to Wirrpunda who must have just missed out.
Logical decisions really

Gardiner had to have it stripped from him and Rowan Jones is no longer a regular.

No need for 4 vc's - the only choice to be made has been made.....

Pfft I knew that at 8:30 in the morning on Wednesday!! Also Adam Hunter has been promoted from the Leadership Developement Group and Waters will move in. I work there so that how i know.

Well aren't you a little smart arse, if you knew why did it take you this long to jump on the wagon?

One has to query how Gardiner was ever considered to be a leader, lets face it the guy is just a big dumb follower who will never be a leader.

Yeah I like this system its similar to the one we had in early 90s with Worsfold, Brennan and Mainwaring as our captains. Cox was unluckly to miss out but would be a contender for captain in a few years time you would think.

The way he played on-field a few years back was definitely leadership material

2 VC's is plenty, but I thought Wirra would've got one. Good descisions anyway.
There was no way they were going to drop Embley or Judd from that group - and as you say 2 vc's are plenty so I guess Wirra wasn't really in the mix....

I tend to agree with some of the sentiments stated here. The idea of having 4 VC's is ridiculous and each person should be rewarded by merit. As much as I love Gardy as a player, he needed to lose the VC as it hurt the image of the club.

Judd and Embers are great choices to support Cuzz.

At the risk of flogging a dead horse, his behaviour since then has negated any thought of him ever being considered again.

I dont disagree with you there, but you did ask why he was considered in the first place :)
