We are now past the halfway mark of the Mick Malthouse reign. He signed on until the end of 2015 with the idea of taking us to a grand in his 3 year stint.

2 years in and we all know that a premiership is a distance away.

The recruiting over the past 2 years I believe has been a huge push in the right direction for this club with "best available" being the main focus.

I look at the assistants at the club and cannot see a successor (if Mick doesn't stay past 2015) within the group.

As much as I believe Mick will get the best out of the players at his disposal and bring in quality "best 22" players. I think we will be looking to bring in a successor at the end of this year or chase the best available come the end in 2015.

What I am wanting to know is, who is out there that we would be looking at bringing in and what would they bring to our club?

I personally would like us to bring in Cameron Ling as an assistant for 2015 with the plan of a easy transition.

I understand that this was a destructive plan for the Pies when Buckley was given the successor role and the last thing we want is bickering within the coaches box.

What are people's thoughts on what we will do? Surely the club is already thinking about it!

It's from a TV interview in america

Mick loves succession planning.

Not interested in who it is. Wondering why kids and women need to be hidden. Is it a rap lyric?

It's from an interview in the US where Antoine's sister was attacked in her home by a man who broke into her bedroom. Antoine was on camera saying "hide yo kids, hide yo wife, cos they raping everybody out here" and two kids autotuned his quotes into a song.

While I would like to see Lingy as an assistant coach, is he really our best option? He's unproven as a coach since he moved straight into the media after his retirement. I think we would be better off looking for an assistant coach who has a bigger coaching resume than Lingy but not so long that he's been out of the game for a while. Maybe Brett Kirk? Scott Camporeale? or Darren Milburn?

Mick found the offender.

Another Mick thread? This is becoming like the main board. 4 different threads - all discussing how crap we are with slightly different angles.

It's funny because I can remember Collingwood supporters on BF bagging Malthouse relentlessly circa 2005-2008 & a number of Geelong supporters wanting Bomber Thompson removed from the Cattery during the 2006 season & into the early rounds of 2007. I guess it is a good thing AFL clubs don't take much notice of their supporters when it comes to football matters.

It's hard to tell, no one really knows how good a person's judge of talent is and their ability to manage a list until they have done it before and have built a list.
Plenty of coaches out there who struggle to tell the difference between a good average player who shows potential but well never really make it (Thornton, Russell, Bower etc) and a player who will make it and by make it I mean good enough to be a part of a premiership. This is the most important skill a coach can have and unfortunately Ratten was lacking in this area despite being good in all other areas.

Micks been there before, built teams from the ground up time and time again but will he go on? I'm inclined to think he will, he's just too competitive to back down from a challenge like this. He seems fit and healthy and as long as he has the passion, which I am guessing he might, then I recon he'll keep going.

As for a successor. People grossly overplay the influence game plans and match day coaching actually has on the outcome. I hate the idea of supercoaches or messiahs, guys who roll up to middle of the road performing teams and then win premierships. It's little to do with their coaching and all to do with the timing of their arrival (Ross Lyon). I guess you have to be good to identify if a teams about to peak high though so that is a skill in itself.

Personally I'd like another guy like Malthouse who has proven them self and done it all before. You can go out and give an ex-player their first coaching job and it can be a guy with a great understanding of the game who will coach the team beautifully but his list management skills are a complete unknown, which just so happen to be the coaches most important skill. This likelihood of getting a young coach who is an elite judge of his players is less than 50/50. Great work if you do happen to hit the nail on the head though.

Would Worsfold be worth perusing? I don't think Roos is in the picture but you never know. Really tough question that needs to be dealt with when the time comes.

Another etsal1 post being negative??? No, surely not :p
It's not really about Mick, it's about what we are fans would like the club to do about our coaching ranks post Mick.
I put money on it you have your 2 cents worth in time.

Mick will get another contract for sure. In fact, I reckon the club will extend his current deal by 2 years.
Just a gut feel that the club will put their faith in him to build the list and get us playing regular finals footy.
Was terrific seeing him up at North Ballarat yesterday watching the NB's.

That's awesome he made it out there and I would really like Mick to see this through. I don't think he accepts defeat very well (Ask Sam Lane and the other Journos from Saturday night about that) and it would be eating him up inside.
I hope the 11 o'clock call doesn't come to haunt him when it comes time for contract talks.
I would like to see us still bring in a few assistant coaches that are only a year or 2 out of the game next year. Strong character personal that have been to grand finals and have won. People that know what it takes to win finals and win the big one. Preferably people that were the captain of their club or in the leadership group when they won the grand final.

Nathan Buckley, he is at collingwood now so only assume he will be at carlton in a few years. Maxwell for next captain as well
And expect Joffa to come across as cheer squad leader and sit beside Barb...

He looked a broken man yesterday.:D

Mick has eyes for talents and knowledges to rebuild the club so can stay on as director of coach but we need a Ling or Dew going forwards....
