I have mentioned it before but I really like the way McKenna talks about football and think he makes a good coaching candidate. He was a smart and successful player in a successful side, he has coached at WAFL level, he has been an assistant at a Victorian club.

I doubt he would get the job because he doesn't seem to have quite the profile or experience to edge out others but what do people think?

Not a bad call.

In terms of assistant coaches, I'd say he'd be right up there. Probably, only O'Donnell (with his experience alongside Lethal) would be ahead of him.

I'm not a Mark Harvey fan, at all.

I raised his name sometime ago with luke warm responce.
But he does appeal, is a defender (which most good coaches are:confused: ) and is very eloquent and decisive with his communication skills.

Mark Harvey is the opposite and will not be a success IMHO

I have said it before on other threads.

Odonnell class act - well liked and respected and he comes from two clubs that had a winning culture.

He may even bring a couple of Lions with him who are not regularly getting games. Aaron Shattock - old Sacred Heart boy; Dylan McLaren, Jarred Brennan, Anthony Corrie.

I can't see us going down that track, but he does have a terrific pedigree. Played under Sheedy in a winning environment, and has spent considerable time under the master, Matthews.

The only novice coach that I would be prepared to gamble on if we went down that track.

Bluey coached in the WAFL last year and his side struggled. New coach this year and they are on top of the ladder with pretty much the same squad. Word from his WAFL club was not encouraging.
He was also released by the Eagles.
I think other candidates would be better credentialled.

But the best current coach is a former centreman/midfielder as is his assistant. By this logic, we have to go with O'Donnell.

McKenna seems smart enough and affable, but what has he done? It is a known fact that under Malthouse you don't get any room to move in your own direction, so all he has basically achieved is to implement someone else's plans. There is no evidence that he can think for himself in a coaching sense.

Adelaide needs certainty at the moment and this will not be achieved by Craig, Harvey, McKenna etc. O'Donnell would be the only current asistant worth taking a risk on. After seeing us first hand on the weekend, he may decide that he enjoys the assistant role a lot more than he thought.

I would be interviewing Wallace now, if the plans and ideas stack up, appoint him prior to the season's end and let another caretaker have a stint. Let the bad blood flow during the final rounds and then get ready to start afresh for season 2005.

I agree that if we are to go for an untried senior coach, O'Donnell would appear on the surface to be the best option.

over here in perth he is not viewed highly at all. there are doubts about his motives for coaching and his communication with the players. give him afew years. at least craig knows the footy club and its players inside out and they no him.

btw, im not sure if u have heard. but apparantly hawthorn have almost settled on wallace as there chosen one. if i were adelaide i would be having a huge dip for him (if not already).

I wasn't advocating his appointment as the AFC coach. I was just pointing out his merits of future consideration as an AFL coach.;)

Laidly did Ok coming out of Malthouses shadow.

I agree we must go for experience, we must offer Wallace the position.

If we miss him it will not be because of any other clubs actions, it will be due to Adelaides in-action.
