Some major works to be starting next year.

If us lot are forced to watch training on the far side then I hope that they have done something about those bloody ants. People will start to go missing.

I remember the first time I ever visited Cockburn...

"Hell yeah, an empty parking spot on the street practically right outside the front door. Score!"

Came back an hour and a half later to find my car covered in chlorinated spots of water that had come down from the water slides.

"Oh... that's why"

I’m dragging this thread from the trash heap!

Our much maligned sand dunes are potentially getting a facelift! So much whinging. So much complaining over the years.

Eliza Riley has an article on code sports.

It’ll be state of the art! 🤯

We need to see this article!

Fremantle eye hangar-style training facility, seating for AFLW games as part of development plan

The outer sandbank at Cockburn has remained untouched since Fremantle moved into its new high-performance facility in 2017 – but that could be all about to change under a state-of-the-art plan.

A hangar-style training facility and additional seating to house AFLW games are set to form the basis of Fremantle’s bold plan to develop the vacant land surrounding its Cockburn training facility.

It’s understood that a state-of-the-art indoor training facility and terraced seating are two of the proposals a working group is currently interrogating, paving the way for Victor George Kailis Oval to become the new home of Dockers’ AFLW games as soon as this year.

Fremantle recently unveiled a facilities upgrade that included new AFLW changerooms, coaches’ boxes and an undercover 250-seat spectator terrace, with an eye to hosting women’s and WAFL games.

But boasting a net cash reserve of more than $7 million, the Dockers are believed to be in discussions with local council and government about acquiring the vacant land next to its facility for future developments.

The outer sandbank has remained untouched since Fremantle moved into its new high-performance facility in 2017.

It’s understood that Fremantle is considering building a hangar-style facility at the western end of the ground while terraced seating could wrap around the remainder of the hill. In the interim, a temporary grandstand for AFLW games could occupy the Remembrance Avenue end.

The Dockers have played AFLW home games at Fremantle Oval in the heart of the harbour city since the competition began in 2017. However, the facilities are widely considered substandard for professional games.

The AFL assessed the turf for safety concerns last season as WAFL tenants South Fremantle made a deep run into finals, impacting foot traffic. The Dockers also moved changerooms last season to an office building at the venue to avoid the rundown state league facilities.

Fremantle averaged 2,239 fans at AFLW games last season so the club would need to be confident of seating that many spectators to shift games to Victor George Kailis Oval. A move would simplify game-day logistics, with the AFL-standard turf a bonus.

It’s believed the AFL has visited the site given the venue would need to pass a compliance check. One source speculated the Dockers would face an optics issue relocating games from the thriving Fremantle precinct given the league’s ‘heartland venue’ messaging.

Victor George Kailis Oval has already proven it can host pre-season games after Fremantle defeated West Coast in match simulation on February 21.

The Dockers were contacted for comment.

Pretty sure this is just written based off the Simon Garlic interview on YouTube.

I dunno, I really like having Freo in Freo. Freo oval may be antiquated, but it is a great spot

What will I complain about if the sand banks are developed?? ? I've already run out of my Davies hatless schtick and apparently Coldplay is no longer played on matchday. 😭

You’d think the AFLW thing is the only way they will get funding.

I wonder what the financial upside would be going to play the games at Cockburn.

Great to see the club finally making a move on doing something with it, those dunes just don’t really scream professional sporting team facilities.

If they don't do that (new facilities), maybe someone could setup a pop-up pub there called the "Sandbanks" in the meantime? Or with the upcoming surf park coming close by, maybe it could be called "The Dunes"?
