Colin Carter - Deep Thinker

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

If you look at Colin Carter's corporate history you'll see his comments are quite measured and deliberative. So I doubt there's any need for concern about him being "...outspoken just for the sake of it...".

I hope Frank doesn't get a touch of verbal diarrhea now he's no longer the Prez. I'm not sure the club would be too delighted at Frank telling all and sundry about the prospect of the club moving its headquarters to Armstrong Creek should the proposed re-development of SS take place.

On the membership question, Colin knows how important membership numbers are to the continuing prosperity of the club both on and off the field. I guess he's bewildered as to why when we're having our best run in ages so many members are missing in action. And what that will mean when we take a dip.

On an unrelated matter, rumour is Cookie is close to committing for a further term.:thumbsu:

This has made almost as happy as the win last night:D

I liked what I read - esp. that he's a Xian - lol.

But he will have to be careful in what he says - its a minefield isn't it now days.

BTW, I just bought a House Cat Membership as I never get to games. But it was Colin's membership comments that got me over the line this year. Most of us should be able to find $80 a year for the pleasure of following this team.

VC - cut out a couple of bottles of Red and give the money to the Cats!

With the Brisbane Lions, the AFL does not recognise Fitzroy's premierships in the Brisbane Lions total. Because Port Power joined the AFL in their own right; not aligned with Port Adelaide Magpies (even though they merged last/ this year), they shouldn't be counted.

As the original "breakaway" clubs that formed thew VFL have not changed (apart from Sth Melb moving to Sydney), there is some merit in having the 1877-1896 VFA Premierships count.

For some yes , for some no. If Collingwood had 5 flags they would already be counted.

He was also interviewed on ABC before last week's match, and it was a very interesting interview. He talked alot about Barca and how they thrived within the community with high community ideals. For example whilst cross country rivals Rea arel spending big on imports who ended up watching the Champions League final on TV, Barca where playing 7 Catalan locals in possibly the single greatest club performance ever.

I heard that interview on ABC last week, and was very impressed with Carter. Particularly with his points about the parallels between Geelong and Barca, both being teams based in regional cities, developing their place in the community and also playing attractive styles of footy.

I was also pleased with his thoughts on recruiting players, not necessarily high draft-picks, who can be groomed to play the "Geelong way". With the draft this doesn't necessarily mean players from the local comps, the way they can in Barca, although hopefully Stephen Wells and his team do keep a better eye on the local players than do the recruiters from other teams.

But definitely one of our strengths is having our VFL team, where our young players can be developed by the club, while also sometimes playing alongside some of the senior players coming back from injury etc. I think we've all seen how well players like Duncan, Menzel, Christenson, Hunt and Vardy have slotted into the senior side when they've been given their opportunities. This suggests that they have all learnt to play the Geelong way, and augers well for our future.

For those who didn't hear it, the Carter interview on ABC can be accessed here:

Oi ! How do you know I drink too much red ? ;)

:thumbsu:

:D Well the user name sets you up for a start re liking a tipple!

Then I can sometimes smell it on your posts.:D

Lastly you said you were curling up in front of the TV to watch the game with a bottle of Red. ;):D

Come on mate - get online a get that $80 membership. They give us at least that much value for money just in knowing smiles and nods we can give to workmates and friends - we basically haven't lost for nearly 5 years!!!;)

I agree completely that Carter's interview in this instance was very calculated and deliberate, and he's been around big business long enough to know how to avoid a faux pas, but footy isn't just big business - it's an emotional game that invites parochialism and irrational "brain fades" that other high achieving presidents from the corporate sector have publicly displayed at some point after gaining tenure. If I were a hawthorn supporter I'd be constantly annoyed at Jeff's apparent inability to avoid pointless controversy by making an almost weekly diatribe about <thing/vendetta> where there is no real chance of a resolution. Carter is already testing the water with his call to include VFA flags in the premiership tallies which seems like more of a pipedream than a likelihood, I wonder if he will make bigger waves over other trivial matters?

For the record I like that he's asserting himself though, some clubs have presidents who you never hear from, or about.

The issue will be if we count our VFA tittles , do Port count their SANFL ones ?

Fact of the matter is we won 7 premierships in the premier competition in the land before 1897, why shouldn't we recognise that, even if the AFL doesn't (and shouldn't). We didn't come into existence in 1897.

And I don't think that 36 or so premierships that Port won in the SANFL are going to be forgotten by them so quickly either and nor should they, it is a great record.

Only the ones who force their beliefs on everyone else. Carter hasn't made the statement that going to church is a requirement of GFC membership as yet, so maybe you can leave your bible bashing out of it too.

Mmmmm....

I think it has been great that the last and current president of GFC are Xians. Their character and faith are intimately intertwined with the character and culture that the GFC have been building over the last 10+ years.

We are both almost completely agreed that the way Thomson left Geelong was pathetic. It went against what we knew of him, and against the culture we have seen being built at GFC. A culture with pretty deep roots in Xian character!

I'm not afraid to comment on the fact that our president has talked about his Xian faith in a major article in a major newspaper. It is a very large part of his deep thinking, which is what this thread is about.

Be careful. I watched Angels and Demons last night.
They can get quite nasty when they want to.

I agree that as a club we should celebrate all our Premierships regardless of what league they have played in.

But my opinion is that only flags won since the National Competition started should be counted for the AFL.

Then you could list it as Geelong Premierships: 2 AFL, 6 VFL, 7 VFA. etc

It doesn't mean that previous flags are any less important just puts them in there proper historical context.

I guess only problem is that how would we differentiate the current VFL from the previous VFL.

Hmmm. It might work. But be prepared for them to dazzle you with contingency plans B,C,D,E,F,G.
Deep thinkers they are.
