Take the drafts out of the picture. Out of the list we have now, can you see a starting 18 in six years time?

Dad came up to me the other day with a starting 18 in six years time. He has supported Collingwood for nearly 50 years, so if there was anyone who should predict a team for the future years, it should be him.

I'm not taking credit for his work. It was all him.

Collingwood Starting 18 (2012)

B R Shaw, O'Brien, Walker
HB H Shaw, Maxwell, J Cloke

C Pendlebury, Iles, Rowe

HF Thomas, T Cloke, Egan
F Rusling, C Cloke, Didak

FOLL Fraser (C), Stanley, Nicholls

Key Notes:

Backline
- Walker to play on the third tall.
- Maxwell may not have the height, but he has the smarts and skills to hold down CHB.
- O'Brien's "straight dash" will cause headaches for opposition Full Forwards.
- Collingwood need R. Shaw deep down in defence, because of his speed.

Forward line
- C. Cloke will be used as the back-up ruckman, effectively changing over with Fraser.

Centres
- Most centremen should have big motors. Iles is no exception. He is a very smart football, too.

Rucks
- Ruck Rovers should be molded tough. Stanley will be no exception. Although he is the only player in that team Dad has a question mark over.
- Nicholls is the right size to play Rover. He is quick and tough at it.

Think of your own team... if you dare!

Funny you mention it, but I did one of these at the start of 2001 for 2006!

I think it's time to revisit this:

Take the drafts out of the picture. Out of the list we have now, can you see a starting 18 in five years time?

Collingwood Starting 18 (2006)

B: N. Davis, N. Stone, H. Scotland
HB: A. Ukovic, A. Hill, C Rintoul

C: D. Roach, D. Adkins, A. Dimmatina

HF: D. Baynes, B.Kinnear, T. Lane
F: J. Molloy, B. Tuckey, R. Betheras

FOLL: S. McKee, C. Steinfort, G. Freeborn

Key Notes:
- Buckley and Burns to retire, and Lica's knees clearly can't hold up forever
- Tarrant = Nutcase. Delist!
- Trade Rocca and Fraser to North for Carey, while he is still in his prime and they've still got currency.

Anyways heres my go.

B H.Shaw, Anthony, O'Brien
HB Pendlebury, Maxwell (VC), J Cloke

C R.Shaw, Iles, Rowe

HF Thomas (VC), T Cloke, Egan
F Rusling, C Cloke, Cook

FOLL Fraser (C), Stanley, Didak

Notes:
- Backline is a problem Maxwell needs support, Walker should be gone by then. Depends on Johnny A.
- Iacobucci to be there abouts (don't dicount him).
- Pendlebury to be our class rebounder
- Tarrant may still be around. He'd only be around 31ish?
- Thomas to play midfield but need to fill in forward spot for now. Perhaps Cox can get a spot?
- Johnson still playing and would put him in but this is supposed to be a team of youth.

you should hope that we pick up some extra talent on the way, because that team looks trashy at best

Trashy?

Walker will come good.
C.Cloke will come good.
Rowe will come good.

Most of the players in that squad have got heaps of football left in them.

Thanks for not being confident about our future

I am supremely confident about our future. all i am saying is that we will need to fill quite a few holes with future drafting/trading! Walker and rowe are fringe players that will never amount to more then being fringe players.

Perhaps i am being a tad harsh on Rowe, but he is far from being able to say yeah he is going to be a gun.

Cam cloke granted! he needs to mature because he can do great things, but also some very stupid things. needs disciplining, send him back to pre-school!

Our backline according to you will be way to short. I think we need to draft a QUALITY tall and i wouldnt be suprised if pendelbury players chb or chf (and trav at chb)

p.s the centerline needs needs a major boost, you a relying on a rookie to hold it together. We need a buckleyesque player to fill the void. We may pick him up in next years bumper draft, who knows!

Have you see Iles play?
In two years time he will be a superstar of the game!

We won't see another Nathan Buckley, because there is only one Bucks.

hmm i watched 2 NAB cup games and i cant recall him playing, so he either didnt play or he didnt catch my eye.

yeah i am being very disrespectful to bucks, but you know what i mean.

p.s.

this is a comment made by you on iles, not long ago:

"Sam didn't "standout", but he did a couple of nice things, like you expect from a first year player.
We can't judge him on a few performances... give him time at Williamstown."

that can't be for real??

you've managed to pick a squad of delisted/traded places. thats probably harder than tipping 0 out of 8.

Well he did standout on Saturday. If he puts on those performances regularly, Iles will be in the team.

If you don't believe me watch Williamstown play this Saturday at Trevor Barker Oval, Sandringham.

Nope, Not exactly.

Cook might/might not make it.
Iacobucci is struggling.
Nicholls will be good value.
Hall is a dud.
Walker can achieve anything.
Davies will be good value.
Going on my information, Egan will play "flashy" roles - probably can't play four quarters of football.
Cameron Cloke can achieve anything.
Anthony is no certainty of making it, but I hope he does.
Pendlebury should be very good, providing he stays injury free.
Stanley should be another Burns-type, providing he stays injury free.
Cox could make it. If he doesn't there is no loss their because we got him in the rookie draft. Same goes with Toovey, but I am more confident with Tooves.

I am more excited about the first year players than anything else really.

Iles has got a long way too go (in terms of football) but from what I have seen of him at Williamstown, I am going to say right now he is our next centreman.
Pendlebury will find a spot on the HBF/Wing, with his evasive skills and his height (190cm), we could be seeing a Dal Santo-type.
Stanley will be molded into a Burns-type for sure.
Thomas will be a superstar of the game, that's a gimme.

The recruiting staff (obviously) went for explosive pace, mixed with toughness and class.
