Virgil takes the reigns at Collingwood:
After an extensive 48 hours as assistant coach at North Melbourne Saints, Virgil has taken over as head coach of Collingwood for the 2009 season.

"Well, I've wanted a head job for a while now," Virgil said, "and I feel that Collingwood has the most potential within it's list, so I am absolutely thrilled about our chances in the coming season. I appreciate the opportunities presented to me at North Melbourne and I believe the experience will help greatly".

When quizzed about list management, Virgil was adamant that more depth is required within the squad, and that a specialist full-back and a roving forward pocket will be priorities come trade time.

In other news, Collingwood stalwart Chad Cornes has been elevated to the club's veteran's list. Today Virgil heaped praise on his marquee backman: "Chad's an absolute stud, and it's really exciting to have a player of his quality to help the younger guys down at the club".

Youngsters sign on, but morale at Collingwood mixed?

Publicly, Collingwood have been talking up the signings of young midfielders John McCarthey and Greg Bentley to new deals, the latter of whom became the first player to survive the bidding that erupts during each year's trading period. Internally, though, morale at Collingwood is wavering under the leadership of new coach Virgil.

Virgil has privately admitted that Collingwood are consigned to losing Heath Shaw to the bidding that has erupted for his services, joining high profile youngsters Bryce Gibbs and Cameron Wood to leave the club since Virgil has taken the reigns.

Adding to the instability is Virgil's stance regarding his current players. It is understood that Ben Johnson has not even been offered a one year deal for next season, despite playing 16 games for the Pies last season.

Shaw and Johnson join Mark Austin, Raphael Clarke, Justin Westoff, Sharrod Wellingham, Heath Grundy, Brodie Holland*, Brad Moran, Jessie White and Brennan Stack in the long list of players who have been told that their services will not be required if a fair deal comes along for their services.

In other news, Jamie Charman has reached an agreement to stay with the club for the remainder of his contract. It is understood that Charman asked for a trade to be done after being told opportunities would be limited for him next season, but after luke warm interest from other clubs Charman and the club have reconsidered their position.

Collingwood seeks new homes for fringe players

A week on from Collingwood's last press leak, things are looking quite good for the young side that Virgil has been able to assemble, though he is adamant that the club still has a lot of work ahead of it during this trade period.

"Yeah, we're pretty stoked with the way trade period has gone thus far, I think we've avoided most of the hassles that come with trade month, but there's still a lot of work to be done" Virgil said.

"We're really happy that we've been able to find new homes for Brad (Moran), Raph (Clarke), and Shazza (Sharrod Wellingham), but there's still a few players who's futures are uncertain, so we're looking to give them some stability".

Brennan Stack, Luke Casey-Leigh and Mark Austin are believed to be the three players who have been told they will not be retained, joining the 16 players who have already left Collingwood during this aggressive trading period.

It is believed that Jesse White, Heath Grundy and Ben Johnson will all be retained on short term contracts should no suitable offer for their services come along.

Westoff, Charman look for more opportunities elsewhere

Collingwoodboard.com can confirm that both Justin Westoff and Jamie Charman are still assessing their options going forward, given the perceived lack of opportunity for both at their current club Collingwood.

Charman has been told that he will be a back-up ruckman and occasional forward at Collingwood next season, while Westoff is currently fourth in line behind Travis Cloke, Chris Tarrant and Sean Rusling for a spot in Collingwood's potent forward line.

Westoff is the only Collingwood player being courted by rival clubs at the moment, and has officially been offered what is believed to be a long-term deal by Melbourne. Whilst Westoff has threatened to walk due to a perceived lack of opportunities at Collingwood, Virgil is adamant a trade can be reached to secure his services for a club after a key forward.

"Justin is a good young prospect who would be great for our future, but we just can't find a spot for him at the moment so he's told the club that he'd like to chance his arm and break into another team. While we want to keep him, we also want to do what's best by Justin and give him his opportunity".

Whilst Charman is contracted for the next two years at Collingwood, he has told the club that he would like to seek a club where he will play every game and prove his worth. It is understood that Collingwood will ask for a decent back-up rucking option from the club that expresses the most interest.

Jamie Charman finds new home, 2009 leadership group announced

Collingwood coach Virgil has kept to his word and given Jamie Charman a new start, trading him to Virgil's former club, North Melbourne Saints. "Jamie is really thrilled to be given the chance to prove himself at another club. I think he'll be a great fit for that club, and I think that this is the best thing for both Jamie and the Collingwood Football Club" Virgil said regarding the move.

Despite now only having one established ruckman, after starting this trade period with four, Virgil is confident his side will hold up for 2009. "Yeah, we've given Josh (Fraser) a lot of responsibility, but he's up to the task. We've also got youngster Daniel Currie coming up through the ranks who should be a great player for us in time, so we're pretty confident going into next season".

Adding to Virgil's praise of Fraser, he has been announced as a member of Collingwood's 2009 leadership group, along with Collingwood stalwarts Chad Cornes and Travis Cloke, along with newcomers Brendan Goddard and Nathan van Berlo. Whilst Virgil would not be drawn on who would be given the captaincy, it is understood Cornes, Fraser and newcomer Goddard are favourites for the coveted position.

Collingwoodboard.com understands that Virgil's initial reaction to his new list and his starting side for next year will be named at some point within the next week.

Three new signings signal new era for Collingwood

Todd Goldstein, Ben McGlynn and Josh P Kennedy have all made their way onto Collingwood's list today, and coach Virgil is pleased with the way his list has panned out, suggesting that his club will once again be in premiership contention come 2009.

With a full list imminent, Virgil has spoken to collingwoodboard.com for the first time about the list heading into next season.

"Yeah, we're really happy with the way everything has turned out thus far. I think what sets us aside from a lot of other clubs in the competition is that we can play right down to the 29th, 30th man, whereas a lot of the other clubs in the competition really struggle to find that same depth.

"We're really stoked about landing Todd today, he'll be great for our club in the coming years, and Josh and Ben add another dimension to our side and keep the guys in the team honest.

"Our team is probably one superstar short of grandeur at the moment. We gave up a lot of quality players this time around, guys like (Brett) Kirk, (Heath) Shaw, (Alan) Didak, and Brycey (Bryce Gibbs), but we're committed to making 2009 the year our club steps up and takes a stranglehold on the competition".

Virgil also signalled that Cale Morton has established himself as the pick of last year's draft, and is likely to be signed up to a long-term deal in the not too distant future.

Sam Butler is the only player to have been traded from Collingwood's list today, finding a new home at North Melbourne.

Collingwood starting 18 for 2009 announced

Collingwood has revealed its 2009 starting line-up exclusively for collingwoodboard.com, sending out a clear message to the rest of the competition.

Coach Virgil announced that Brendan Goddard will captain the side, surprisingly getting the nod ahead of Collingwood stalwarts Chad Cornes and Josh Fraser, who have both been named vice-captains.

“The experiment by the previous coach to play Chad in the middle of the ground obviously didn’t work too well last year, I think he had his worst run in years, so this year we’re going back to basics and Chad’ll be controlling centre half back much like he has in the past” Virgil told the press yesterday.

Paul Duffield and Richard Tambling have surprisingly been given the nod over more experienced teammate Ben Johnson on the wings, though Virgil said that competition for every position on the field is fierce.

“We’ve got a lot of faith in the 18 that we’ve selected, but there’s some really good depth in our squad at the moment, so guys like Duff and (small forward dynamo Alwyn) Davey are really gonna have to show that they are worthy of the faith that we’re putting into them”.

Davey has been selected to rove the packs in the forward line, but Virgil has suggested that he could lose his place to Sean Rusling for structural reasons if his performances are not up to expected levels. Cale Morton, who Virgil rates highly, has been given the job of working alongside Davey while he gains experience for a future midfield run. Stephen Milne is also said to be in the running for a spot in the lineup.

“Cale will move into the midfield in time, I think he’s a little raw at the moment, and the three guys we have in there at the moment know each other really well and they know how to work for each other, so we’re pretty happy with that set up for now”.
