Losing to a side on a 14 game losing streak and to a side having conceded over 100 points in their last 25 games... who is to blame?

Just a one off? Or has this exposed them as a pretender many thought they were?

Discuss.

Maybe he can blame the AFL for not stamping out poor player behaviour and allowing Fevola to play when he should have been suspended until at least Round 5 for urinating on a window.;)

I don't know but its going to be hard for Malthouse to blame the AFL, Adrian Anderson, umpiring, the draft whatever for this loss.

He'll find something to complain about. So far this seson he's come out and complained about:

1. Why did we have to travel to Dubai and lose and then play all over the country for three weeks!?!?!

2. Stupid interchange rules made by stupid people

3. Umpiring made us lose even though we were up by 4 goals against a Brisbane side in the rain.

4. Nab rising star award should be given to Nathan Brown

5. Should be more interchange players because 120 interchanges in a game isn't enough.

6. We beat Richmond but I'm gonna complain about our midfield anyway.

I'm sure there's more. What's next?

Oh don't worry, I will... no one has tipped us to be apparent premiership contenders though and we didn't happen to slip up against a team coming off a long run of consecutive defeats...

It's becoming a bit of a normality though at Collingwood. A loss to bottom team Richmond in the last few rounds of 2007 probably cost them a spot in the top 4 and a double chance, a loss to an inspired Essendon outfit (with VFL hero, Courtney Johns stealing the show) who were also bottom at the time in 2006 almost certainly cost them 4th position in the wash up...

Can't rule them out yet - but the brainfarts against the lower teams will have to be a thing of the past if the Pies consider themselves to be genuine contenders... the jury is still out...

it's the same old collingwood for the last 3 years! Collingwood went to the game just thinking that they would just turn up and win. The same thing happened in 2006 against Essendon in round 19 when they had only one 2 games and Collingwood were 4th on the ladder.

In 2007 Collingwood lost to Melbourne (Queens Birthday)who were 14th and Richmond in round 19 who were last and the pies were top 4.

Collingwood will never improve unless we can beat bottom 4 sides. its so frustrating!

I'll be even more pissed off (but not surprised) if we beat the Roos on saturday night. Actually Collingwood probably have a better chance of winning cos North are a good Side!

collingwood are a pathetic excuse of a side an absolute joke of a club

Unlisted are so pathetic the AFL won't even let them run out on the field.;)

No credit to the opposition who were good enough to beat you on the day? Can't say I'm surprised.

I don't think he is meaning disrespect but, going on past form, we SHOULD have hammered you... Most sides seem to find something extra against us and you guys frustratingly found a lot and I think a lot of Pies supporters secretly feared that...

Because we seem to lose so many of these games against supposedly far weaker sides it's starts to give you the shits... :(

Carlton did play very well and deserved the 4 points however far more than we did and hopefully this will make us tackle each game no matter who it is against with appropriate respect...

Why?

Collingwood and Carlton games are usually competitive - even last year when we were arguably worse and you were on a run, we kept up with you guys and even lead at various stages until the final quarter. Not to mention the motivation factor...

Perhaps it's because of the mentality of some of your players, thinking this will be an easy win? But those players should know better than most about what the rivalry brings out from the two clubs.

Why is what I am wondering also... they never show up to these games against lowly placed teams as if it's going to be a walk in the park, when in fact most people know it won't be because Carlton, Essendon, Richmond also happen to be bitter rivals...

It does make you wonder whether they start to believe their own hype before these games and expect it to just happen for them. But you never win a game with that attitude, look at Geelong, they look to hammer everyone every week, Brisbane in their heyday did the same...

We ain't exposed, we just need to pull our thumb out of our asses and look to smash sides, not just play tiddly winks. We barely took you on, our minds were somewhere else maybe at a different ground...

And this is not an excuse because you guys were good enough to take full advantage of it and put us away, as you should have and you did... :(

We are just sick of these pissy efforts when we see from games like last year's final we can stick it to the best of them wherever we may be and go with them, then we are hopelessly outplayed by a team who have be honest really struggled, we looked like the ones who hadn't won in a long time...

So it's not we are begrudging Carlton's win or trying to disrespect the fact you beat us, it's just frustration that we enter big games like that and do not come to play...

You guys certainly did and all credit to you for that, we hopefully learnt some lessons from how you approached the contest on that day. Whoever wants it more generally ends up getting it...

I admire your knowledge and interest of Collingwood's 3 losses to bottom teams over the last 3 years, While we are on the topic do you want me to draw a fancy pie graph and list Essendon poor performances over the last 3 years?

What you think brainfarts are new to the Collingwood F.C we have had them for over 115 years fact is Carlton have had the wood on Collingwood since day dot Grand finals, Finals, Cent & Mill match, this was a massive game for them and once again they pulled through, no excuses they turned up we didn't.

As for the jury is out? Well at least the jury is in the dock thinking about a verdict unlike your club.

Tipping against your team for the 5th week in a row I see.

GO DONS.

We were beaten by the better team on the day. Plain and simple. It's sad that "Collingwood supporters" jump off the boat when it seems to be sinking. It'll be interesting to see how our boys respond. I thought Carlton would win. They always rise to the occasion against us. It's sad to see how arrogant Carlton fans become. I hope that they lose next week for that reason.

Good call.

They've been playing out of their skin for far too long.

The party's over, magpies.

Again I'd like to remind the poster that the thread at hand is about the Collingwood Football Club... deflection tactics aimed at Essendon's performances in recent years has nothing to do with it, why don't you leave those tactics to Mick Malthouse? For the first week in a long time on the weekend the Pies' lost because they simply were not good enough on the day, and it was the first week in which MM didn't come up with some pathetic deflection based on free kicks, the AFL or whatever enters his head at a press conference...

As for the Bombers, there is no doubt they have a long way to go in many areas. Anyone with any real idea about football expected not much from them this year, and at the moment it seems to be playing out that way. They are an average football side at the moment but are putting the blocks together for a potential tilt in a few years time. I expect them to perhaps win 6-8 games this season.

This is in vast contrast to Collingwood, who played in a Preliminary Final last year and were expected to be bigger and better this year. It's only one loss, I know - but do you really think there is any significance to any of their Grand Final losses from decades ago to their performance on the weekend? Absolutely not. This was Collingwood who had played in the Preliminary Final last year against a side that had lost 14 consecutive games. It's a game that the Magpies should of won - but didn't. Serious questions still must linger about their credibility as a genuine contender. The likes of Geelong and Hawthorn would never have allowed such a game to slip - that's the difference between the best and the rest.

How is Hawthorn the best all of a sudden? Don't you remember they bombed out to North Melbourne in a Qualifying Final just last September yeah?

They won 1 final and got killed in the other. To a team that got killed the next week against a team who got killed in the Grand Final. We lost to the conquerors of this petty triumvirate by a mere 5 points.

Glad to hand over title of April champions to Geelong and Hawthorn. But many premiership sides have had a bad day before or even many so let's just wait until September shall we to sort the wheat from the chaff?

Hawthorn is far from the best, they have a lot more work to do before thinking that.

When it counted, Hawthorn beat 8th placed Adelaide by a mere 3 points. Then lost to the Kangaroos by 33 points.
The Kangaroos then lost to Port by 87 points.
Port then lost to Geelong by 119 points.

We lost by 5.

In September my friend, when it counts.

So to say Hawthorn is among the best and Collingwood is pretenders based on one bad day is an absolute load of bollocks.

Thats what they all said when we lost by 100 points to Brisbane last year. Then we got within a kick of one of the greatest sides in AFL history.

Are people just plain dumb?

So you must be a Collingwood supporter to be even remotely critical of them?

Do you really think Hawthorn would of dropped a game to Carlton though? or Richmond? or Melbourne? At the moment, I just could not see that happening. I pointed out in an earlier post the Pies have made a habit of losing to the cellar dwellers in recent years and it has gone on to cost them bigtime. I also believe Hawthorn defeated Collingwood the last time they played. They have clearly overtaken them as the competition's greatest challenger to the reigning premiers.

Yes, we get reminded daily on here you "only" lost by 5 points in the Preliminary Final and how you won a final in Perth last year - a great achievement. But we'll all look back at 2007 and remember the Cats got the chocolates on the day when it counted most.

Collingwood cannot possibly be considered legitimate contenders if they continue to lose to the lower ranked teams. The general consensus pregame was that it was going to be a romp in the park, and it should of been. Carlton played well for sure and deserved their win, but it's a game the Pies should of definately won. The next few weeks will be telling - they have the wood over the Kangaroos in a big way, Anzac Day is usually a tight affair and I expect the Bombers to lift for that one, followed by the clash with Hawthorn. Anything less than 2 wins in that lot would be an extreme dissapointment. Interesting times ahead.
