After finishing agonisingly close to a Grand Final, the Pies lost to the eventual premiers West Coast in the preliminary final. In a surprise move, Nathan Buckley chose not to take over the senior head role, instead replaced by Peter Williams, a relatively unknown coach. Leon Davis decided to retire, along with Anthony Rocca and Scott Watters from the coaching panel.

New coach Peter Williams called a press conference to introduce himself and his plans for the team.

Collingwood Football Club Press Conference

Q: Welcome to the world of coaching, are you excited Peter?
A: I most certainly am, I've been a lifelong supporter of the Pies, so I'm pumped to be coaching them.

Q: Will you be making many changes?
A: I expect to be making some changes around the place to try and aim for another premiership.

Q: There are rumours that some salary cap issues could arise, how will you sort these out?
A: We are hoping we can fit most people in, but will need to make some trades to get a list under the cap for next season.

Q: You have already secured two young stars in Cole Buckley and Michael Burns, how do you feel about that?
A: Well that's why Bucks' stepped down from the head job, he didn't want to be coaching his son, but he'll be a big part of 2012.

Q: Are there any players you're looking at from other sides?
A: We are probably going to look at a tall forward and maybe another ruck, with a few other minor changes.

Q: Will you be playing youth or sticking with the veterans next season?
A: We are still very young and will be picking the best 22 available each week.

Dane Swan win 2011 Best and Fairest

Champion midfielder Dane Swan has backed up his All-Australian selection by winning the 2011 Copeland Trophy, his fourth in a row. This means Swan becomes the first player to do this in Collingwood's history.

Nick Maxwell, Alan Didak and Leigh Brown also made the All-Australian team.

Trade Week Trade Bait

Alan Didak was the main carrot placed on the trade table to try and ease salary cap troubles. Other players asking to have a change of scenary included Brad Dick, Jarryd Blair and Alan Toovey.

Toovey and Broughton swap teams

Alan Toovey & Pick 66 for Greg Broughton (Fremantle)

greg-broughton.jpg

We are quite happy with this trade because Greg wanted to get more game time and we think we have a spot which can open up for him, while Toovs is more suited to Subiaco so hopefully he can further his career there.

Didak heads back home

Alan Didak & Pick 32 for Danyle Pearce, Pick 22 and Pick 56

Again we felt that while we wanted to keep Alan, we wanted to save a bit of salary cap so Danyle was interested in making the move. While we have a number of outside midfielders, we feel Danyle's pace make a difference.

Ben Sinclair, John McCarthy head to other pastures

Ben Sinclair for Pick 44 (Melbourne)

John McCarthy & Picks 100, 117, 134 for Pick 53 (Kangaroos)
We wish them all the best in getting more game time. :thumbsu:

Buckley and Blair head to the Tigers for Nahas

Simon Buckley and Jarryd Blair for Robin Nahas (Richmond)

While we understand that trading two players for one isn't too beneficial, we are hoping Robin can be a good player for us up forward and helps us salary cap wise.

Huge deal sees Jolly, Shaw go to Blues

Heath Shaw & Darren Jolly for Andrew Walker & Jarrad Waite (Carlton)

726748-andrew-walker.jpg

This is a huge deal, but we needed to ease some cap space and Walker will be very handy up both ends. Waite is likewise but will mostly be used up forward.

Brisbane cubs head south in huge deal

Sharrod Wellingham, Brad Dick & John Ceglar for Todd Banfield, Aaron Cornelius & Josh Green

This is a massive deal which brings some youth to the club, and while we're unhappy to lose Sharrod, this deal has massive upside. So all the best to the three new Pies :)

#22 Scott Wadley (Subiaco)

Collingwood have selected Scott Wadley with their first pick in the NAB Draft. Scott is an ultra fast, skillful inside midfielder from Subiaco. He has elite courage and determination and Collingwood fans should prepare to see him regularly at the bottom of packs.

#56 Jeremy Harney (Perth)

Collingwood selected Jeremy Harney, a small forward from Perth with their second selection. He is the crumbing small forward who has good goal sense and exquisite skill.

#83 Tyler Upton (South Fremantle)

Collingwood selected Tyler Upton with their final selection in the National Draft. He is a tall forward who is a man mountain. He has often been criticised for his goal kicking, but is highly motivated and seen as a good talent which can be improved.

ROOKIE DRAFT:

Braden Tincey (North Shore)
Braden is an inside midfielder with the old adage "tough as nails". Loves a contest and isn't afraid to get in on the rough stuff. Has good delivery and will be a good fit.

Cameron Guthrie (Geelong)

Collingwood have selected ex-Cat Cameron Guthrie with their second pick in the rookie draft. He can play a number of positions and will be working hard over the off-season to try and get a few pre-season games.

Ashton Hollins (Collingwood)

Ashton is a tall forward who is relatively unknown. He can be a good mark and average shot for goal, but no-one has seen too much of him.

Dustin Ely (Port Adelaide)

Dustin is a key forward who has plenty to work with. Not overly strong, he is a good shot for goal with a massive vertical leap. He is a high flyer who is sure to wow crowds in the future.

Pies sneak over Adelaide in first hitout

Collingwood have knocked off Adelaide in the first NAB Cup match at AAMI Stadium. Despite leading at every change, the Pies never looked home with Adelaide challenging constantly. The Pies rested Ben Johnson and Chris Tarrant, and Pies fans got their first look at Cole Buckley. Unfortunately it was a case of welcome to the big league as Taylor Walker booted five goals on him. For the Pies, Beams, Swan, Thomas and Ball were all prominent while Walker, Waite and Pearce all showed something for their new club.

Collingwood knock over premiers

Collingwood has defeated West Coast by 21 points at Subiaco on the back of a five goal haul from Travis Cloke. Chris Dawes, Jarrad Waite and Todd Banfield all booted three goals each while Dale Thomas and Dane Swan were prominent once again. Alex Fasolo looked lively coming on as the sub, picking up 25 possessions.

They are some big pick ups for the Pies. I believe that the trade with Shaw and Jolly 2 older type players, for Waite and Walker who would be both around 25-26. Get some more years out of the same type of players.

ROOKIE DRAFT:

Cameron Guthrie (Geelong)

Collingwood have selected ex-Cat Cameron Guthrie with their second pick in the rookie draft. He can play a number of positions and will be working hard over the off-season to try and get a few pre-season games.
What? How. We wouldnt have delisted a second year player

What? How. We wouldnt have delisted a second year player

Apparently you did. He's just a "decent" player in this game, not a heap of potential.
