Collingwood (11th) vs GWS (17th)

Draws: 0

At the MCG
Played: 5
Won: 3
Lost: 2

Teams:

Collingwood
Ins: -
Outs: T Brown

Collingwood have opted to give T Brown a spell in the VFL after 3 senior games. On the flip side, after a Mickey Mouse debut as sub last week... McCreery comes in to the 22 proper. Hopefully McCreery brings some youthful speed, tackling, dare and overall energy to what is too often a pedestrian Collingwood forward half.

GWS
Ins: Connor Stone, Jake Riccardi, Jeremy Finlayson, Shane Mumford
Outs: Matt Flynn, Matt De Boer, Nick Shipley, Phil Davis, Stephen Coniglio

GWS have lost handy players in De Boer, Davis and Coniglio… however the inclusion of the highly rated Stone, forward Finlayson, warhorse Mumford and KPF prospect Riccardi… I feel strengthen them in key areas.

2021… The positives so far

143.7 contested possessions (3rd in competiton)
57.7 tackles (4th)
75.7 intercepts (2nd)
47.7 rebound 50’s (1st)
14.3 contested marks (3rd)

Taylor Adams has continued his stellar 2020 All Australian form. He is currently 6th in the competition for contested possessions per game, 4th for clearances and 2nd for centre clearances averaging 5 of those a game.

Jermey Howe has returned with aplomb. Howe is averaging similar numbers to his 2019 and early 2020, but in 2021 Howe has doubled his average tackles to 4.3 per game.

Across the board Darcy Moore is producing better numbers than his 2020 All Australian year. Moore is currently 2rd for contested marks in the competition and 1st in the competition with 11.3 intercepts per game.

The negatives...

The forward line continues to be a main area of concern for Collingwood. Albeit it is still early in the season... but here are some averages compared to our preliminary final year of 2019 when games were of comparable length:

After round 3

Inside 50s: 47 (17th in AFL)
Marks Inside 50: 8.3 (15th)
Tackles inside 50: 7.7 (13th)
Goals: 11.3 (12th)

2019

Inside 50s: 51.8 (8th)
Marks inside 50: 12.3 (2nd)
Tackles inside 50: 11.2. (5th)
Goals: 12.1 (7th)

My Tip

I’ve tried my best to forget the last time Collingwood played GWS at the MCG. Since that numbing loss; both Collingwood and GWS have been in decline. After trading Jeremy Cameron, and the loss of several mature players to injury…. GWS are legitimately a bottom 6 side at present. Not many pundits would have predicted their 0-3 start to the year…. a further loss to Collingwood then turning that into a disastrous 0-4. Embarrassing for a franchise that was supposed to have won a flag by now.

Whilst GWS average 6 more inside 50s per game than Collingwood this year; GWS are 17th for points scored this season and 18th for marks inside 50. A typically stout and cohesive performance from Collingwood’s defence (4th least points conceded in 2021) should see to it that GWS have trouble converting their inside 50 into scores. A key here for Collingwood will be how well it it nullifies Toby Green’s X-factor in the forward half. Does Bucks get someone to run with him all night? It must also be noted that the inclusion of Finlayson and budding young forward Riccardi will mean that Roughead, Moore and Madgen will have a solid night's work curtailing the GWS forward line.

Despite their ladder position, GWS still have enough talent across the lines to beat Collingwood… especially if Collingwood lose the midfield and the inconsistent Collingwood forward line fails to gel on the night. Lose this and Collingwood go 1-3… with a daunting round 5 trip to West Coast to come. Followed then by an Anzac Day clash against an improving and energetic Essendon. For a round 4 game, the stakes are high.

Looking forward to the game, hopefully we put our stamp on it early.

I was part of the WHE out crew, but won't be wishing ill will towards him, hopefully he can snag a few goals against the old mob.

Hopefully Daicos is back up the field too, to cover Tyler Brown. We need him up field for more of the play

If your aspiration and expectation is for our opposition to be "one injury away from becoming local footy tier side" , in the hope of winning, what a sad football club we have become , supporters and members included
Just go doom elsewhere then. One thing is being foolishly optimistic, another is being foolishly pessimistic.

Like there's no solid reasoning behind everyone saying we are going to lose tomorrow, you guys are just pissed off about last week and so you're bringing that offended to this game.

And then when we belt the Giants tomorrow night you guys will be back to saying oh how great is this club blah blah blah. Happens all the time around here.

Not sure about that.. we will need Daicos or DeGeoy to spend more time forward, given WHE Thomas and C Brown are still in the 22 and McCreey is a first gamer
