..did he mean if we trade for Carltons top tradeable pick? PP's are non-negotiable IIRC, but Carltons non PP first pick should be 3 (maybe even 2?).

Imagine this: Tazza+2nd round to the Blues for pick 3, picks 3 and our top pick (5-9?) to St Kilda for a midfielder (Dal or Ball).

I wouldn't do it, because I want Taz at the club, but is it a feasable trade? Maybe Carlton don't want an injured non KPP forward.

The Saints will surely feel salary cap pressure soon, as may the Cats and Eagles (to a lesser extent). We should be prepared to trade in that climate. We traded for Bucks and Rocca and they have been great for our club.

I think we should trade our first rounder. The player we want wont be there and as stated before, our number 1 priority is getting a class midfielder. I bring to you all, EXHIBET A: "Jimmy Bartell" a quick skilled midfielder that has caught the eye but isnt yet setting the world on fire, although he had a fantastic game last week. Offer our First rounder and Davidson, for Bartell and their 2nd rounder. Its fair and with the family values added the general manager might want to poke a stick around to get his son to the club. Now ill present Exhibet B: "Steven Salopek" another classy mid who from most accounts hasnt felt at home over in SA and wants to return back home. He has hardly played a game for Port, but is all class, our 2nd rounder should do it. On the board we can still float the likes of: Richie Cole, Davis, Woey, Williams(if anyone is dumb enough), lokan and such. Why do we have to go after the huge recruit every year. If we can walk away with Bartel, Salopek and a maybe 2 mid-late 2nd round picks we will have done very well.

I don't want that trade, I want Taz, but i floated the idea because there are two sides to every deal. Most Pies love Tazza and rate his skills highly, but I bet every Blue in here will run him down ("pick 46 maybe" or some similar insult).

At the end of the day, a player is worth what other clubs will offer for him, not what we reckon he's worth. What diod we give for Bucks? Starca and Troy Lehman, good players both but Staks was pretty much past it and Troy had long term injuries. Not a fair trade at all. We may not get a fair trade for Taz from anyone these days.

To trade Tarrant or not is really a difficult one. He has undoubted talent but his application is questionable and his output is disappointing. Tarrant is the classic hurt you either way player. Keep him and will he produce – trade him and will he become a superstar?

Because of his talent and glamour he will always be highly paid. Right now I would say he will never justify his pay. He has so far been inconsistent. He seems not to be able to play well with an injury and even when fit can be shut down and can be frustrated and become undisciplined. If we could be guaranteed of his fitness and form we would still have a player who can get a lot of the ball but can’t kick up to AFL standard.

Is he the sort of player that when traded might be determined to prove us wrong and might just do that? The problem with that fear is that it is very counter productive. It is a very poor reason to keep a player. The only relevant consideration should be what will he produce if he stays and current indications are that he can produce exciting footy but doesn't often enough and regardless he misses far to many goals. Witness the 2002 GF for how costly that can be. While I am on 2002, has he improved his kicking after kicking a flag into the stands?

Is Chris Tarrant the modern day Rene Kink? Eventually we lost patience with Rene and he certainly didn’t hurt us when he left. At the time I love Rene and was disappointed to see him go. In hindsight and with a bit of age under the belt I am sure we waited far too long too get rid of him. I fear Tarrant and Rene are the same man 2 decades apart. Mind you, Rene Kink was a far better kick and probably a less flawed footballer all around.

We were hoping he'd develop into an Embley-type, but it seems he's keen to return to Victoria.

We picked him up 3rd round 2 years ago and he's played a couple of games this year. That probably drives his trade value up to a 2nd rounder.

This kid could be a big part of your midfield for the next 10 years.

We gave any 2 players outside the top 10 and a draft pick (which got them Scott). Starc and Lehman were who they chose. We were a couple of years post a flag so our squad had more than 10 quality players. They actually wanted Mark Fraser from memory.

Brisbane had no choice in trading him, who to and for what price. It was in his contract. In fact it amazes me the grief he cops for leaving Brisbane. So far as I know never has a player looked after the club that drafted him so well before he even set foot in the joint. We have the choice with Tarrant that Brisbane didn't have so the deal can be a bit more loaded for us.

What is fair? I don't really care. What do we want is more the issue. We want an early draft pick and a quality skilled quick midfielder. You want a rare athletic tall that can mark well on a lead and take a screamer then pay up or P.off. All we have to lose is a potential trade we don’t currently have. We can afford to be greedy. In some ways I'd like to go through the process but end up keeping Tarrant. It might just be the foot up the arse he needs.

Don't much about him. What we need is genuine pace and foot skills. How tall he is is irelevant at this point. If he is very quick, a good kick and a good ball getter then I'd be interested. If not we already have him covered thanks.

We are better off trading FOR top draft picks not getting rid of them

Good thread. Some people think we should trade our pick away, others think we shoudl trade players to get more picks.

My opinion is you only give away a top five pick for an absoute gun. As it stands now, there are no guns left. They have all re-signed with their clubs (except for Kozi, and he is unlikely to be traded). Therefore we use the pick to draft the best available.

Now your starting to speak my language, if this deal was on the table the club should seriously consider it. Last night however only reinforced my opinion that a ready made onballer with SKILL is waht we need. We had more tham enough forward 50 entries but the delivery to the forwards was once again horrendous. There is a story in today's Age about this years draft, there is nothing good on offer for our pick people! If Murphy and Ellis were there then yes, sit tight and pick them but they'll be long gone. Next year will be one of the best drafts ever and that's when the earl picks will be valuable, but not this year. So trade that first pick Pies for a Stevens a Bartel a .....???
