If any team gets injuries they will be in trouble. Gettin quite sick of hearing/reading the same thing.

Yeah, we lost 2 off our list before the season started so of course our depth will be tested.

If a couple of kids like Yagmoor, Elliot, Rounds, Keefe etc stand up then this goes a long way to fixing the issue.

It's much like the Hawks last year who were forced to play some kids because of injury who in turn showed a bit, hence they are now listed in their 29.

The simple fact is that no side has real depth like they used to have.

With 18 teams now in the competition, and the Suns and GWS smashing through the last 2 drafts and rookie drafts, the depth at the other 16 clubs is at the weakest it's ever been.

From now on, luck will play as much of a part in deciding who wins the flag, and by that I mean which of the 4-5 premiership contending teams each year is in the better position in September injury, fitness and form wise.

Yes, our depth could be a major problem come September, but you only have to look at our round one opponent and their total lack of ruck depth to see they have problems also.

Tomorrow's depth comes from today's game time.

We lost so much experience from the list with Fraser/Medhurst/O'Bree/Lockyer etc that it's natural that we will need to replenish.

Needless to say that short term our replacements for the above were better, but long-term they won't be. That's why we really need to strike now, and work like anything to get our younger players up to speed.

And that's why Buckley will play the kids early and often. And we will lose matches. Just keep it all in perspective, as he and the coaching staff will. I see us being pretty patchy early in the year, settling on our best 25, then crushing teams later.

Gee it's hard to predict what will happen this year.

Matty was spot and a few of the other posts mention the fact of the emergence of GWS and Gold Coast have put a dent into depth.
Also losing some experienced players over the last year or two hasn't helped.

The main point is that we must hope that our young players can step up.

With the likes of Keefe,Young,Marty Clarke and i really hope players like Josh Thomas can finally overcome injury play a role.By all accounts if Thomas is fit he'll be handy.
The newbies like Witts,Ceglar,Paine , and Elliot,if these kids can step up early in the year,while our core senior players are rested and overcoming niggles,it will go a long way to us making the finals in good stead come,the business end of the year.

Also if the young players and newbies play well throughout the year,it means they'll be blooded as depth players come the business end of the year.Round 1 baptism of fire for some of the newbies,they'll learn quick enough in the trenches...........Welcome boys to AFL footy.

Non issue at this point in time for me.

Going into the start and backend of 2010, we lost and replenished guys like Fraser, O'Bree, Medhurst, Lockyer, Presti etc and we came through that even stronger.

Sure, Krak and Caff are blows but they are in areas where we should be able to cater for.

We will be fine because someone else will jump up just like Blair, Caff, Dawes etc did in 2010 when they came from nowhere.

I expect Elliott, Yagmoor and Paine to see some senior action in 2012.

If Josh Thomas comes good too that will be a major boost for mine- particularly the rubbish part of that article that says Geelong has "blue chip investments" coming through i.e. Smedts, Guthrie etc.

Josh Thomas is just as much blue chip as any of those guys. Ditto Witts.

I looked at how guys like Paine, Yagmoore, Ceglar, Elliott, Seedsman and Hartley performed in a team that was 80% kids.

Imagine if you only threw in 2 or 3 of those guys at a time to cover any injuries? Which means they're surrounded by experienced heads? I could see Yagmoore fitting in very nicely from day one as Leon's replacement.

Marty is a like for like with Johnson, and Fasolo is more than ready to take performs Dids' role until Alan is ready to come back.

Honestly, I think our depth this year could actually be better than last year given how good the kids look. But that wwould depend on just how many injuries we come into the season proper with.

Any more than 3-4 injuries to good players and we coudl be in trouble.

Remember that Nathan Brown and Goldsack are effectively new recruits this year, and Marty already has experience off the bat. So I don't see depth being an issue at all. For me it's more attitude and gameplan that I eagerly await to see.

I actually agree with the article. Long gone are the days where a Tarkyn Lockyer or Shane O'Bree couldn't get a game in our best 22. We genuinely had experienced AFL players playing in our VFL team regularly a few seasons back - not any more.

I actually believe that our list has been getting progressively thinner over the last three years (yes including our prem year). Does this signal the end? Absolutely not however it does make it tougher.

It places a heavier reliance on the Seedsmans, Elliotts, Paines, Woods, Yagmors, Youngs of the world to step their game up to the next level. Yes they can all currently compete and probably even play well at AFL (taking a leap of faith with the 1st years here) in rounds 1-24 however AFL Finals and then Prelim and GF are an entirely different ball game. This is what the article focusses on.

As yet, none of the aforementioned players are capable of imposing themselves in a meaningful way in a highly contested, aggressive form of football that is AFL finals.

One or two may emerge as contenders throughout the season...we need them to as it will greatly enhance our chances of snarring another flag!

These young guys will play this year, in form or not. With the sub rule and the game demanding so much from the players we will have to rest senior players at times.

I'm not inclined to worry too much about such talk. The quality of our top 22 is far ahead of most other teams and we have a number of big bodies sprinkled around. We have a number of options for most spots and I'd suggest that a sprinkling of youth through the side will work well for their development. You have to remember that the number of kids we played in the NAB cup is anything but representative of what will happen in the season proper and a lot of those kids will look a whole lot better with 16 high quality players around them taking off the pressure. Hawthorn manage it with guys who aren't near the quality of our list so I don't think it's that big a deal. Where we may struggle if at all is in the quality of our second string ruck stocks because those guys maybe tall but they don't have the big bodies. We may be forced to use someone like Dawes or Clokey from time to time especially if Jolly goes down.

The media on one hand mention that we may be in a bit of strife because we don't have seniors players at VFL level, on the other hand they praise us for having the best development and hence fast track program in the league. Surely this puts us at an advantage when getting the young blokes ready for the rigors of senior footy.

The thing about that article and talking about depth is that they're talking about players who you could safely play in a GF if it was next week. There are 22 rounds to get games into fringe players and kids to develop them. There is no way that Collingwood wouldn't give new and fringe players games during the year, so the quote about saying Collingwood has to be extremely lucky is incorrect. They also didn't include players like Keeffe and S.Buckley saying they aren't safe picks to play in a GF.

The media says we have 24 players that are capable of playing a final - that the supporters would trust to perform.

Here is my own list (players are in no particular order):

Blokes not included that could prove me wrong or are rookies: Williams, Hartley, McNamara.



In my opinion, our depth is very young, but is good.

The advantage we had in 2010 was that our depth was guys like presti, obree, Lockyer, medhurst. They were proven players.

Personally, I feel that we are almost in a re-building phase.... But we're still a premiership contender. THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN OFTEN.

If the kids we've got keep showing, our premiership window should remain open for 3 -5 years. Just as we predicted in 2010. We're on track IMO

I call making a premiership going okay. Winning one would be brilliant.
