Global

AFL

You just shouldn't use them in the same sentence.

AFL vs Soccer, LMFAO.

See you in Western Sydney, we're still waiting for you guys to build us some more cricket pitches, SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!!

Re: Soccer Vrs AFL - Will we go global???

"Soccer Vrs AFL - Will we go global??? "

Short answer. Yes. I'm not certain of the rate or to what extent but it will happen. For one simple reason. Our game is more fun to play. :)

Having played League, Union, Soccer and to a lesser extent Grid-Iron it is my humble opinion that this is the one thing that will long term make our game a winner. Just watch a pair of Rugby lads down the park playing kick to kick and you will see what I mean.

Now all sport is fun but Aussie rules is a game that allows players to express themselves athletically in 3 dimensions more than the other footballs. It requires a broader range of abilities. It requires you to be strong enough to bust a pack open and retrieve a ball, and be athletic enough to sit on the packs head and take a mark 6 feet in the air if you are able. You need to be fast yet durable. Swift of mind and body. Now I know not all Aussie rules players are these things but if you are, dig out. Express your self.

Though these attributes are valuable in any sport the opportunity to utilise them may be rare or even non-existant. Take a Soccer player who has an amazing leap for example, his sole case to exhibit his vertical talent is to head the ball occassionally. If the same bloke plays Rugby he has a similar problem. In Aussie rules you get to show case all of your abilities and regularly. And if your not take a good hard, long look at your self !

Wait until we start to get African Negro's or African-Americans playing this sport with any kind of skill base. With their natural athletic ability they will love this sport for the same reason they love Basketball, only more so. They love to take on opponents one on one, or even two on one and beat them with athleticism. They love to run and jump, and they love the physical stuff. Guess which sport delivers this like no other ? Anyone for Michael Jordan in the ruck or at CHF ? Yeah I know the best ones will stay where the money is but you take my point. Its only a matter of time.

Re: Soccer Vrs AFL - Will we go global???

I dont know FreoFury, I can take your point about it being more fun for the atheltes to play, but american sporting and entertainment culture is pretty different to ours. You look at all their major sports, they all involve short bursts of action rather than a continous gameplay, even ice hockey is a bit stop start. plus aussie rules isn't terribly showy either like most of their sports. It'd be a bit like an american saying gridiron is gonna take off globally just because americans prefer it to other codes.

Re: Soccer Vrs AFL - Will we go global???

Short answer. Yes.

Course you will, how long has it taken to grab a slice of the Northern market with 2 teams that have been given a financial edge over their competitors?

Given the low general opinion of League on this board, how do you explain it's continuing domination in the 2 most populous states in Australia?

Get your head out of the clouds, it won't happen, tell 'im he's dreamin.

AFL the 3D world game of the future, that is some seriously funny crap freofury, it'd be hilarious if you actually believed it.

Re: Soccer Vrs AFL - Will we go global???

Never. There are many reasons it won't go global...one of them being most Europeans think it is too violent.
Footy is a great domestic game, but thats all it will ever be.

PS: Soccer is MUCH older than footy or rugby, and soccer is a widely recognised sport and is definately the greatest global game. Don't argue with it :thumbsu:

Re: Soccer Vrs AFL - Will we go global???

AFL fans are the most unaccommodating fans in the world. Not to mention paranoid to boot thinking all codes are going to migrate in the greatest city in the world and take over from the local code.

Get over and enjoy all codes you small minded freaks!

Re: Soccer Vrs AFL - Will we go global???

AFL could never become popular in countries with struggling economies. Soccer is perfect for those countries. A simple, no-contact sport where you are very, very, very unlikely to pick up an injury is what they want and need. I can't see an Brazilian father of 2 young children playing AFL at the risk of picking up an injury and then struggling to work, when the family is already struggling to survive.

On another note, I watched Australia's last soccer game (yes I awoke specially for it and they were pathetic) and saw that those Liecthstien players have made up some new and original injuries. At one stage their goalkeeper went down with what appeared to be a boogy in the nose, while another player went down later on with what can only be called an itchy back. He had to leave the ground for 5 minutes so a physio could scratch it for him before he came back on. :D classic I'm looking forward to the world cup :thumbsu:

Yes, and how big you must feel, being so original with your personality, likes and dislikes that you follow soccer because you think everyone else does. If everyone was just like you that would make for a very boring place.

THe two most populous states in Australia are NSW and Victoria, (as at end 2005, Australian Bureau of Statistics) and last I checked, RL was not "dominant" in Victoria (or in areas of Southern NSW, come to think of it). God you RL fans are arrogant.

Now, people with sensible opinions:

There are amateur leagues springing up all over the world, the American league alone has over 44 teams.

Yes. Aussie Rules will go global, and is in the process already. Whether it will go global to the extent of soccer is another matter - I can't see that happening.

What the AFL's aim should be is for the grand final to become a global event like the superbowl.
The world cup dwarfs all, so lets just sit back and enjoy the ride for the next month. No need for comparisons as many love both games. :thumbsu:

:thumbsu:

i can't wait for the world cup to kick off tonight, got the biggest steaks in the land to be followed by some FIFA2006 on the xbox & then it's kick off.

Re: Soccer Vrs AFL - Will we go global???

Wasn't it yoda or one of those silly star wars creatures that said it is dangerous to look too far forward?

to try and project that far into the future is not our responsibility.
Our responsibility is to support AFL as best as we can right now and here.

but if one is to have a guesstimate.. and now put any emotional weight behind it... i would think AFL would have a future around the world - but not for at least another 100 years.

Let's look at the facts -Australian football is the most entertaining, the fastest and the most exhilarating sport in the world. I don't think it will ever be beaten. if you build the product they will come.

And if it goes global, the chances of Australia having the best league in the world is very small as the money is overseas, and the players will go over there. Why would we want our only little heaven to be shared?

Bingo!

Re: Soccer Vrs AFL - Will we go global???

My biggest issue is with the use of the word AFL. How can you promote Aussie Rules calling it the name f the major league ? Australians know the difference between gridiron and NFL, is the rest of the world so stupid that we must use a provincial (albeit professional) league as the guiding light ???

But to answer the question I think yes.

why ? because it is a great product.

I have seen it become hugely popular in Queensland, and it hasn't happened overnight ....

It only took 50 years it is the most popular sport on Nauru and the Tiwi islands.

and players will come from overseas to play here. Of that there is no doubt (you can even ask Demitrigoof), and we need them, because we need quality players to keep the game watchable, whichever way you look at it, our country (and market) is too small and growing too slowly to continually generate talent out of a few hundred thousand kids.

and look at those that have come from broad backgrounds. where would our league be without names like Ron Barassi, Alex Jesaulenko, Jim Stynes, Tadhg Kenelly or Mal Michael ?

as for you insecure little ****s ... we are so late on the scene that we will not see players going overseas for more money. nor will we lose our own culture and traditions. it ****s me that this country and forum is so full of nuff nuffs

sure overseas leagues will put their own spin on things. it is the cultural cringe. look at the americanisation of rugby league, with its cheergirls and fireworks, or the britishisms and colonialist feel of private school rugby union and apartheid.

aussie rules will adapt to different environments, but it will only add to the sport.

I'd personally love to see Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka, Dave Beckham, Ronaldo and even Shaquille O'Neal, Brett Favre, Kobe Bryant or Andrew Johns play "Aussie Rules" instead, these athletes would be exciting to watch IMO !

In the words of that great Kiwi Rachel Hunter:

it won't heppen overnight, but it will heppen ;)

The International Cup in 2008 will be huge !

No-one can se that happening, if all you hope for is a bunch of ex-pats setting up some second rate social comp then congrats, it's done.

AFL - The 3D Global Game

What athletes, who needs athletic African-Americans when you've got these guys.

Look at all the locals in the Singapore Wombats.

AFL Chinese style, note the lovely groundskeeping - looks like they sweep it regularly.

Going global indeed.

No Pro-Evolution? :p

i've got pro evolution 5 on the PS2 and rate it.

but we don't have the 4 controller adaptor for the PS2 and we'll have that many if not more people.

so FIFA2006 on the Xbox it is.

which apparently has been made to play more like pro evolution, so it's all good !

Re: Soccer Vrs AFL - Will we go global???

one on hand i'm dead scared of the yanks destroying aussie rules as we know it with time outs & set plays and stuff like that.

. . on the otherhand they haven't really managed to **** golf up yet & have some of the greatest tournaments & courses in the world.

but then they have their own indigenous code so taking up another one might be beyond them.

. . hmm.

re: aussie rules going global.

i think it will happen. and it is a good thing. it's gotta start somewhere, so wherever there are leagues now they should be supported by the AFL even if it is just a bunch of ex-pats. eventually, like basketball here in australia, you'll get retired AFL players or those that were just not good enough playing as "imports", and then eventually someone will come here to play.

and then eventually, like with andrew bogurt, we might have a foreign number 1 draft pick. which would help boost the sport in whatever country they are from.

thinking about it, that's the sort of thing that really boosts the profile of something. when someone sees (like say luc longely for example), a local boy go & make it good in the big league. which in this case would be the AFL so encouraging foreign leagues whatever the standard they might be now can only be a good thing.

you are a ****er mate.

if you read my post there is no way I am deluded by trhe AFL. I don't really like "AFL"

but in "Aussie Rules" I have true belief, because it is a great game.

I dont think you'll ever get your wish of our "indigenous" game dying

I am realistic though.

Nauru might not be a world sporting powerhouse.
Neither might Queenland, New South Wales, Papua New Guinea or New Zealand.

but it does show that Aussie Rules capacity to rapidly grow in foreign territory. That is all I care about.

long live Aussie Rules !

Yeah, better watch out, those Yanks are eyeing off AFL.

This entire thread is priceless, apologies to the realists in AFL-land, you know where your sport is at and what goals are realistic.

To the rest of you, thank-you for all the laughs you've given me over the day, it's been a shocking working week and this is a perfect way to end it - with a good old belly laugh.

I'm off to the pub.

yeah fair call.

but any organisation that's wanting to come up with a strategic plan of how it wants to achieve X Y & Z in the long term future should be (and probably would be) mindful of what it is & isn't prepared to compromise on.

they already do certain things in exhibition games/leagues that they don't do over here don't they? i saw a video a while back of an indoor style aussie rules thing in america that looked nothing like a real game, yet it was being marketed as such.

so yeah i personally think that the league should, if marketing the game overseas, market the game as it's played here. or something. blah.

good call.

it's friday.

I will actually be going to my first AFL game this year, a workmate has made me the deal of attending an AFL game with her in exchange for her coming to a League match with me, I'll approach it with an open mind.

watch the boundary umpires after a goal is kicked & how they run back to the centre with the ball.

. . . it's hilarious. should be ballet dancers.

i went to a match in sydney once & sat in a corporate box as a kid trying to explain that to some business honchos. they thought it was the funniest thing.

looks really
