i will preface this by saying i don't want any club to relocate. but it's ******* remarkable how they manage to skate by every time there's a discussion of this. i try to be charitable with caro but i just can't ******* fathom the thinking behind writing yet another "north (might be) in the gun" article that contains official quotes from the club and the afl completely ruling out and refusing to entertain the idea.
Sure you can. She actually hates us.

There's nothing controversial or novel about that.

Not at all - I'm just keen to know what that sort of hole would actually mean.

I assume we would be playing a few games elsewhere and trimming more fat off the lean beast. BUt I'd be interested to understand it more.

I can probably just download our financials and take a guess some time.

the thing that gets me about the article is the very careful, deliberate use of indefinite statements. it's always "could be" "may" "are a target of discussions" because there's no actual new information to report. part of the trickery of journalism is always writing as if you're a disembodied voice describing facts about the world, we're all so used to it that we think of it as just a writing style but it serves a purpose. if they had to actually say "here's what i think" then they'd actually be putting themselves on the line to a degree.

another thing you'll never see in these articles are any quotes to the effect of "an overwhelming majority of north melbourne supporters are adamantly opposed to any form of relocation, partial or complete, and would likely abandon the club and the game if such a thing ever took place, just like what happened with fitzroy." seems like a pretty ******* pertinent fact if you're talking about the advantages of moving a club over creating one from scratch.

I'd prefer that too. But if it's fair for us it's fair for others to cop similar scrutiny.

"However the club would be forced to search for a significant new revenue stream should Tasmania refuse to fund North on a fly-in-fly-out basis."

Being debt free this year is good timing and I have no idea what the financial impact would be of losing these games.

Significant money but we would likely find another option and move on.

Try Bendigo? Same size as Ballarat population wise, not much further out.

That's Caro journalism 101 mate.

She's a ****ing gossip columnist, nothing more.

it's not caro journalism, it's just journalism. i don't want to single her out because she's just doing the completely normal thing for her industry. it's just worth thinking about the purpose that it serves.

There's journalism, and then there's s**t mate.

She delivers s**t.

Mate! She's been single handedly pushing the agenda/story/fantasy for 10-15 years! We can single her out, it fine, shes earnt it!

14 years ago her so called "reputation" (largely built upon being a woman & playing the victim) took a massive hit from which she never recovered.

The Age politely mothballed her afterwards.

i'm talking about the use of indefinite language. for what it's worth, i don't think she hates north melbourne. i think she just exists in a world where footy is strictly business and it's just logical to use footy clubs purely for financial ends and not as public institutions, which they really were supposed to function as prior to financialisation. the angle of the psychic damage it would do to the game to kill another traditional club never seems to come up in these discussions because it's thought of as just emotional frivolity, as opposed to the pragmatic realism of the market. she probably is just writing about what she hears from higher-ups in the footy world, the problem is she's never going to write from the perspective of most of the people who actually watch and enjoy the footy.

It is the journalistic environment's fault that, during the worst of the COVID outbreak in this country last year, she was on her horse demanding we be relocated?
For lord's sake do NOT be making excuses for that detestable excuse for a senior journalist or whatever tf The Age claims she is. Second time now, SHE HATES US.

Well - all other papers etc and all other reports that are exposed to the same environment but choose not to make their careers about relocating North

Its her life's work. She should own it.

A clearly detached administration is now trying to moor itself to something of substance.

I wonder if Paul Roos has been given the task of overseeing this group?

Surely this is actually generated by the past players, with Stevens owning it?

There were reports that this group is also the ones that went in to support Laidley both on his charges and financially after the arrest.

Sydney bloke who broke his leg did I think, Jamie Lawson?

Pretty sure a Carlton player did too.

Hey The_Wookie you're the go to guy on this stuff - legal cases against the AFL for injuries.

Pretty sure the gripe is that Lindsay Thomas isn’t in the general area to blame.

St Kilda is the obvious candidate for relocation.

Financially in the sh*t, their greatest icon is a Tasmanian, plus their their most recent club legend can be the face of the move. He’s been pushing hard for a team there.

From reports twice what we were at our lowest moment, it’s amazing their financial struggles are rarely talked about in the media.

I don’t agree that Joseph, Barrassi, Mantello, Aylett, Casey and Pagan are any of the highlighted. And they are the main reasons we are still around.
Ron Joseph in particular should have a statue at Arden st IMO

No, agreed.

But they are the men who understood that to survive North needs to be showtime as it were - they are the innovators in every facet of the game that made that happen, from being the only club that properly exploited the 10 year rule, leading the comp in attracting big name interstate talent, driving and developing Friday nights.

A better way to describe it would be "the marketers, the hangers on, the leaches and the grandstanders" that you refer to all owe their existence to us.
