Ok this whole drinking and bad boy schtick and our awesome 90s team seems to be doing the rounds lately.

Correlation not causation for mine.

We had a strong authoritarian coach able to implement a clear effective gameplan and set of on-field behaviours.

And a very talented group from 1993 to 2001 who really underachieved if anything.

Hitting the beers is an interesting side note but not why Corey McKernan could kick 65 metres and tear a game apart or Wayne Carey could mark between 3 blokes dedicated to stopping him. Or the midfield relentlessly won contest after contest and drove it forward
the social aspect was very much a reason for our success. Players and coaches have all said it in interviews.

If that dynamic didn't exist, we may have been less successful than what we were. We may have resembled...every other club who envied what we had.

Very interesting.

Less injuries, elite players playing at peak levels for longer. Maybe better social conduct too.

Carey controls his impulses and plays to 2005, Pagan stays, Pickett stays, you add guys like Petrie, Jones, Rocca, Hale, Harding, Pratt etc to refresh and retain the strength of the ageing list.

Heck maybe we would've won 5 flags if the players were teetotallers, weighed their food and went on silent retreats in the rainforest.
LOL! ok, now we're reaching. he was finished when he went to the Crows, didn't do a lot there. Body was shot.

You can't become close friends with people unless you get drunk together and fight outside pubs and cheat with each other's spouses?

Good isolated response.

The premise was players taking care of themselves.

Carey approached his nutrition and recovery like Blakey and he might've pushed to 350 games too.

and that happened how many times over all those years? how about the other 99% of the time they were all together?

now I know you're reaching. the position he played and the constant beatings he copped, would never allowed his body to play anywhere near 350. he limped to 270.

Ok this is sidetracked somewhat.

I'm not trying to argue Wayne Carey's body wasnt battered by CHF.

It's a counter argument (ferball expressed it well) to the gist of the 2020s North players failing because they're supposedly all choirboys and "aren't campaigners who go out sinking piss".

You can, as we have done, level the reverse accusation back at the 90s squad and wonder if they had been more professional whether they would've had more premierships than the inferior Hawthorn and Richmond sides amassed in the decades to follow.

what I'm saying is that, what we did in the 90s, worked at the time. I personally have no doubt from everything I've seen and read, that the social aspect was a key reason for how successful we were.
But that was 30 years ago, and times have changed. Or have they?

Look at the Lions, back to back premiers, but Neale then Payne then Ashcroft, all busted for cheating on their partners. The infamous Vegas trip and related drug/booze fueled debauchery.. scandal after scandal.
Hardly professional, upstanding conduct. Yet they're going for another threepeat

Let's face it, half our team in the 90s were drunkard arseholes. And it worked and translated on the field.

The Clarkson Hawks. Hodge, Lake, Lewis, all people at the time you wanted to see get their karma.

The 90's Chicago Bulls were arseholes. The Australian Cricket team of the late 90s-mid 2000s too.

Our current team lack these type of personalities. I have a feeling Dovaston may change that but he can't be alone.

It’s a bit chicken and egg though. Do areshole tendencies come out with success or cause it?

Ohh Ricky, you're a non-believer in Zane!

I'll just repeat, he's a pick 4 in a zuperdraft that's had some mischief.

I'll continue to bring my BGZ pom poms. He's better than all of them, just needs some luck and of course work harder - it'll come, there's really no hurry. He has 12 more months before he is to show anything.
Let’s hope Zane understands the harder you work the luckier you get!

Brown, Mitchell, Dew... the list of campaigners in those teams goes on

Based on 2025, he’s lucky to scrape into the top 100.. lets hope he can get into that top 50 by the end of 2026

Larkey is arguably top 50. Same as PC but PC’s post suspension period was good rather than exceptional.

The WA football community will receive a massive boost from the AFL’s Origin Community Fund – strengthening talent pathways and coaching opportunities in the regions and low socio-economic areas in line with WA Football’s ‘equity and access’ vision.

More than $1 million will be invested from the AFL and WA Government for WA Football’s delivery grassroots and regional development programs.

The proceeds from Saturday night’s sold-out AAMI State of Origin blockbuster between WA and Victoria will form a multi-year investment into regional and rural programs to increase equity and access, providing talent pathways and coaching opportunities as well as the implementation of school-based and participation programs.

WA Football’s Executive Manager Performance Pathways & Development, Peter Bell, said the funding would go a long way to increasing equity and access for young footballers around Western Australia.

Wondered where he went
I would love to see the money invested in an indigenous pathway. Be great to have a team playing weekly against boys their same age, so against the Sandy Dragons etc.

I’ve seen some incomes from people working in footy roles like this. Might be different because of the money in WA - but from my experience they all get paid a lot less than you would expect. A bit like working in the film and music industry - they rely on people loving the job and lots of competition to do it.
From my experience in the sports industry this is definitely true.

They play on people’s passion for the sport/club to drive down salaries.

well it only "threatens to destroy careers and reputations" if you want to keep publishing it.

if only the herald spent this much energy on the epstein files

I'm fine with not seeing Bill Clinton or Bill Gates in bed with a couple of 13 year olds, but each to their own, I guess.
