Commentators barracking

He didn't last night. I don't know which one of them started the cheering but we didn't rate a mention all night. I've checked the fixture again to see when we play :p
It's ok mate, you'll get an hour from Robbo on AFL 360.

Didn't hear the call because I was at the game last night, but it is as rare as hen's teeth to hear any barracking for Freo.

Basil is an unabashed Freo hater and a massive campaigner, would prefer him not to bother to be honest.

Barry_Badrinath indeed, I was out walking the dog, girlfriend had the game on the radio...

It was embarrassing last night. Richmond play one of the more stunning games of the year and the commentators just wanna jizz over Fyfe and Fremantle. We saw one of the biggest upsets of the year. We saw the undefeated ladder leaders get humiliated on their home deck by a team that has been criticised as going nowhere or treading water. We saw one of the most remarkable quarters of the year last night, yet they didn't want a bar of it. They were too obsessed with their scripted narrative of last night being a celebration of all things Fyfe.

Today's game wasn't much better. I thought I was watching a Carlton premiership celebration. It was over the top right from the word go. It was so bad I almost forgot the Crows were playing, yet they won. The lack of emotion when Jenkins kicked that late goal was telling. It was actually really patronizing towards Carlton. MARC MURPHY THE ABSOLUTE SUPERSTAR!!!!!!. CAAAASSSSSSSSSBAAAAAAAUUUUUUULTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!! KRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEUUUUUUUUUUUZZZZZZZZZZZZZEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRR!!!!!! Eddie was screaming like it was the dying minutes of a tight grand final when they went 12-0 up early in the game. It was like the Crows weren't even playing.

The commentators seriously need to pull their heads in. It's one thing to try to liven up a dull game, even to hope for a comeback, but when you openly barrack for the losing team it's extremely disrespectful to the the winner. They have became obsessed with the possibility of the comeback. "They're only 6 goals down now wowee that could be the firestarter" type commentary has become all too common this year. They have become so obsessed with close games and comebacks they have forgotten that sometimes there are bigger stories unfolding in a game.
Didn't hear the call but am shocked to hear that commentators were barracking for Freo that seriously never happens so shame they didn't give Richmond more credit for a great win against the odds. We are always on the receiving end of commentators barracking so I feel your pain, it ruins the game for those on the other side of it.

However, Richmond get more than your fair share of support so it's swings and roundabouts...

Haven't read the thread but it's probably the thing in football that shits me the most.

Most commentators do a good job of hiding it but when it happens it completely ruins the game (sometimes anyway)

I think its awesome, if you don't like it jump back to ABC you crusty traditionalists

They follow momentum, believe it or not sides earn the support of the commentators, if you play in a style that's entertaining or do something that's entertaining, they commentate accordingly

Not sure why it bothers people, when they get behind Carlton (like today) it adds to the game, when theyre against Carlton, its good feeling like an underdog and quietening them down when we do something good (insert that never happens joke here)

Its all part of the theatre of football, stop being PC sour pusses
Two of the worst commentary efforts ever were on ABC telecasts...the Swans v Hawks game in Sydney in 2012 with Paul Roos in the box actually groaning on air when things didn't go Sydney's way, and the last day of the Sydney test against India during THAT series when every commentator in the box did his best to placate Harsha Bogle...

Contrasts with college radio in America when the home team broadcasts their games in various sports...it's done by unashamedly biased students all chugging beer in the background...hilarious...!

The commentators cheer on the losing side so that people keep interest in the game.

Watching Port Vs Bulldogs and the commentators need to learn that they don't have to talk non stop for every fricken second of the game. Absolute shockers and enough to put people off from watching games.

Tim Watson - Essendon games
Mark Ricciuto - Adelaide games
Jono Brown - Brisbane games
Cameron Ling - Geelong games

These guys are conflicted (particulary Watson and Ricciuto) and the above combinations should be avoided whenever possible, but the networks seem to actually do the opposite and try to accommodate it. For example, Fox flew Ricciuto over to the Gold Coast so he could call Suns vs Crows. Ridiculous.

Come at me everyone but I actually love Eddie as a commentator.

It happens with all clubs at times. The commentary in that video is cringeworthy.

I'm not saying they shouldn't show emotion. A team coming from 50 points down is pretty exciting and I couldn't really fault them for getting excited over that (even when Carlton used to constantly overrun Richmond). It's when the enthusiasm is completely out of whack with what's happening that it's frustrating.

Basil and Dennis were both egging the dockers on
Eddie loves suburban clubs beating interstaters, plus Adelaide are vying with Collingwood for top 6

But I really don't care, silent majority probably don't either

Agree, I enjoyed the barracking in our game. Adds to what is normally an ordinary part of the telecast. If I wanted to hear a play by play, I'd do it myself.

Today was unbearable with Dunstall. He clearly dislikes Sydney and from the first ball up he was arguing clear frees to the swans while appealing as to why the Suns weren't getting any. Happens every week he gets our game.

It's interesting there was such a fuss about last night though, considering the same thing happened in the Hawks vs Swans game a coupe of weeks ago. Constant barracking and over the top gushing for Rioli followed by disappointed congratulations when Sydney got up.

Well it was against a Victorian team last night so the Vic media will actually notice it for once.

Basil is a Freo member so it's not surprising from him. The stations seems to have gone away from avoiding conflicts of interest to actively encouraging them- bomber is on Geelong games, Ling as well, Maxwell for the Pies, Richo for the Tigers.

Yeh, Baz has actually toned the Freo love down a lot since the early days of his morning radio stint on 92.9. Last night was nothing compared to what that used to be like.

Roo is harder on the Crows than the opposition - he's so conscious about not showing favouritism, plenty on our board have sooked about it.

I'm an Eddie fan, but he was shithouse today, to the detriment of the game.

It was embarrassing, but honestly not much different to TV coverage for a decade or two.

The only bloke who I genuinely believed was a great commentator was Clinton Grybas. And that's over the past 20 years.

Jump back to the ABC? What's the weather like in 1987 where you are?

Not sure why it bothers people, when they get behind Carlton (like today) it adds to the game, when theyre against Carlton, its good feeling like an underdog and quietening them down when we do something good (insert that never happens joke here)

It adds to the game if you're watching Carlton TV. No problem with it if it's targetted at Blues fans (or any other fans who are getting barracked from the comm box).

But it's supposed to be a professional call on national television.
