In this age of contracts being one way there needs to be compensation for breach of contract.
Ie the dogs want Lonergan, then they should pay geelong his last year of his contract, same goes with beams. Clubs are investing too heavily and are getting smashed, there needs to be reward for the development in these players who are under contract. Otherwise why would a club have a contract, it only assists the player. If a player has a bad year there is no recourse if the player is on a 4 year deal.

AFL is becoming a joke, cant be too hard on people otherwise they might cry.

And players who refuse to sign on the dotted line like Christensen?

Ease them out of the team and develop others.

Had Christensen been fit and was up for all the games and was refusing a good offer, take about 5 games off him to blood someone like Jansen.

They need to study the system's overseas again. Our draft system was based on the us NFL. It has worked well but I feel FA has changed the intent to the point they need restudy it.

I know the AFL needed to open the market a bit bit I feel they really OPENED it , if you know what I mean

Clubs oversea can trade players without their input , be a shock but I bet we hear more of this by the next agreement is made

OK , now that done , pass the Whiskey.

I think the FA comp needs to be pushed to the following year. Demons got pick3 this year for Chip and it pushes everyone back.

It should apply to NEXT years draft. It would still be Rd1 comp but position dependent on where they finish next year. It might induce the thought of tanking I guess as a downside but the FA pick can be used or traded. Just makes it more flexible and the team losing the player still gets some compensation.

Think we talked about the other day, lots of different variations. Im starting to think the panel approach might work for assessing value , just like they will for the NSW and QLD Academies , but the issue is still for mine , when the comp comes from the AFL not one of the clubs , it means one club wins when everyone else loses

Im using the NFL model as a basis which clearly the AFL have followed.

The NFL assesses the comp value based on the overall FA in/out the previous year. If you lose 3 starters, gain 2 starters, you get a rd 1 etc.

its not perfect but nothing ever really is. The issue with a panel is I fear that if the AFL and the MRP can't get it right on something that they have been running for 100 odd years, what chance have they of getting FA comp's right after 3….. o_O

The icon is for the AFL getting it wrong. Not you Turbs…:thumbsu:

The difficulty for me is not free agency, not the compensation but who pays the compensation. At the moment the afl does. Paul Roos said that Melbourne loses, Melbourne hasn't lost, it's received a pick 3 compensation. Hawthorn is the winner. I can't understand why Hawthorn shouldn't be paying the compensation. At this stage they are the big winners due to receiving Frawley for nix. If they lost their first round pick (19) they would not have been able to recruit O'Rouke. Melbourne and Frawley are also winners. The losers are the other 16 clubs who have their draft positions decreased by one. The solution seems simple to me, the club receiving the player needs to pay something (and this is where a panel may come in) to make it equatable for all.

As an aside, I'm not sure we even need free agency any more as most players, regardless of how long they're been in the system or if they have a contract, seem to be able to get where they want.

they should also have to give GAJ 500 lashings! every player that leaves should pay penance on the back of 'judas'.

hi5!

Dude, don't poke the bear.

Excellent work Chris….100% agree and its crossed my mind as well that this "solution" should be implemented.

I hope the AFL takes a good hard look at it..
