Would you say that Martin is a pure midfielder? Does go forward a lot and play as a small. Doesn't mean he's any worse, just not so much of a midfielder. In my humble opinion, anyway.

He is a pure strong bodied, inside, clearance midfielder who can go forward and kick goals, pure class, the question with him will always be whether or not his disposal on both sides of his body is currently/will be elite

for mine currently it is martin, trengove, scully... but then scully is the one with the most scope for improvement followed by trenners and martin

would be awesome if we could trade sylvia and 1st rnd pick for o'meara (wont happen)

My question wasn't on quality, it was whether he falls under the same bracket of midfielder as Scully, O'Meara, Swallow and Penlebury!

well he isnt what you would call 'pure'
i think gysberts has the hallmarks of being the 'pure' midfielder more so than scully

martin seems to be more like michael voss

I disagree. Scully relies on his elite fitness to dominate. As players like Trenners and Martin have 3-4 pre-seasons under there belt he will have lost his advantage (even more so if his knee is degenerative). As the article in the age describes, he's to small to be an inside mid but lacks the score board hurt to be an outside mid.

Martin reminds me of a more consistent Col Sylvia and Trenners is pure class.

Tom Scully - 182cm, 77kg
Gary Ablett - 182cm, 85kg

It's obvious how much muscle Scully needs to put on just by looking at him. He needs to be Ablett's size.

FWIW I reckon that Trengove and Martin will be better than Scully, but Scully will still be one of the best players in the competition.

8kg, considering he's only had one proper preseason and you generally bulk around the 21yo mark, is not a lot.

Tom scully doesnt dominate though
The reason he has the most scope for improvement is because both martin and trenners have core strength, sculls doesnt
Wait till sculls has the core strength to stand up in tackles and even break them off, its not about your playing weight, but the strength he can gain through his legs and core
