Hey guys, given the little mercenary is officially gone, we need to turn our attention towards compensation.

I have been looking at the AFL's formula for compensation, and we're in luck. It's determined almost purely on age and size of contract. Given Scully is 20 years old, and getting $6m over 6 years, we will almost certainly get maximum compensation.

For a player who meets the highest category of the compensation ranking, and is therefore categorised as a ‘top-echelon’ player, the Commission accepted a recommendation to increase the compensation for these players, which would now see a club receive a Round One Selection and a second selection at the mid-point of Round One, placed after the teams that have missed the finals have had their Round One Selection and before the teams that have competed in the finals have their Round One Selection.

That will equate to roughly pick 10 and pick 11 in any given draft.

The question is, what do we do with them? Trade both for O'Meara? use both? Trade 1, keep 1?

It's been known for a long time, ever since Adrian Anderson made a public announcement confirming so, that we would get Band 1 compensation.

There are a few other threads on what we'll do with them mate :p But to answer your question I reckon we should package one of the compensation picks with a few players or 2011 draft picks and try to score O'Meara or another young mid that has previously been picked in the top 5 or is being touted as such. And then keep the other pick to use in the 2012 draft.

the Demons should engage lawyers to ensure we recieve pick 1 in the 2012 draft

Anything less is a joke

Ah, yeah, good luck with that. I am on your side and believe we should receive a number 1 pick also, but we have zero chance of that happening.

And I'm a little sceptical of chasing O'Meara as well. Isn't he from WA? The pessimist in me suggests he will decide to go home after a few years and then we have wasted the compo picks as well. But yeah, he is supposed to be a gun, and we now need another gun midfielder.

Our focus on this draft must now be to gain another quick midfielder to replace $cully. We lack pace through the middle, and now $cully is gone, we are desperate to inject pace in the middle of the ground.

Very few players actually do go home. And if he does it'll be through trading and we'll have to make sure we get a fair replacement.

Yeah, but O'Meara has had it mentioned a few times, with regard to whether he'd even nominate for the 17 year old selections.

From here on 2nd Aug 2011.

As per the rules with Gold Coast, the compensatory pick would be assessed around the player’s age (greater weighting for younger players), club contract ranking (greater weighting for club key players), on field performance (greater weighting for strong club best and fairest performance) and draft position if less than four years experience.

Scully:
Age: +++
Contract: +++ (assuming they mean new contract, not contract ranking in former club)
On field performance: ? (too small a sample size; 8th in 2010, only 10 games in 2011)
Draft position: +++

All points to a high compensation value you'd think.

High compensation value on the contract he has been given alone. Personally I'd use one pick this season, then save the extra compensation pick for next year when we can use our first pick on f/s Viney and still have a live first round pick as well. Reports of a weak draft this year mean we should be wary of throwing our compo away immediately. Patience will be the best option, we will have 5 years to use the picks. If we improve in the next few years, having that extra first rounder could be the difference in keeping us up the top for a few extra years.

Picks 10 & 11, really? Even if that is just approximate, that is pretty gold for us:

2010 = Gorringe & Lynch
2009 = Melksham & Gysberts
2008 = P Davis & Sidebottom
2007 = Dangerfield & Veszpremi
2006 = N Brown & A Everitt
2005 = Drum & Higgins

A few misses in there but pretty solid nonetheless. I think $cully will be an absolute gun, but this is not bad considering the potential knee issues he will have throughout his career.

I'd be inclined to keep one and try to use one in some sort of deal for a guy like Dawes, if possible...
