Hmm, not sure what to think of this deal....Sounds pretty good, any thoughts?

Basically, it is a P4 2GHZ with a 40 Gig Seagate hard drive, 256 SD Ram, 64MB Onboard Video,
16X DVD, 48x12x40 CD Burner, 1.44 Floppy Disk Drive, 56K Fax Modem, Multimedia Keyboard and
Mouse. It also has 2 rear USB ports and 2 Front USB Ports, speakers and a 17" Monitor!!.
The system is installed with Windows XP Professional, Office XP and Norton 2002 also!! Whilst it
comes with Power DVD disc, Nero Burning Disc, Motherboard disc/drivers.
The system price is $1269 to buy!!! ($1030 for just the tower)
I do have upgrades available on top of original system: 2.4 is $70, 80Gig Seagate is $60,
512SD Ram is $70 or 256 DDR is $20, 17" Flatscreen is $50.
All parts come with a One year Warranty!!

Any thoughts?

Onboard video will suck nuts, add another $200+ for a good video card. I'd also try and upgrade the memory to 512MB DDR. Is there a sound card? Onboard will suffice if you're not too picky, otherwise there's another cost.

And are you getting the original discs for that software? Don't accept anything but.

Considering that XP professional costs 4-5 times as much as home edition and doesn't require registration, then the software sounds somewhat suspect and would represent a major bargain if legit.

But Hey, I would be a hypocrite to knock that.

I put a bid in for a computer on E-bay....and got this email send to me .

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope that you do not presume me intrusive, however I am also selling a computer system through
ebay that you might like to try if you don't win the item you are currently bidding on.
Basically, it is a P4 2GHZ with a 40 Gig Seagate hard drive, 256 SD Ram, 64MB Onboard Video,
16X DVD, 48x12x40 CD Burner, 1.44 Floppy Disk Drive, 56K Fax Modem, Multimedia Keyboard and

All parts come with a One year Warranty!!. If you would like to find out more then you can
simply email me at postman198@optusnet.com.au and I will reply quickly and with photos of the
items.
Again, please excuse my message if it has offended.
Thankyou

So yeah....would probably want at lease 128MB vid card..as for the software, I don't know if they are original??

17" Flat screen monitor? I would have thought they would be worth $600+ on their own. I guess there is no harm looking into it hey. Thanks people.

I'd have difficulty believing in the legality of that, especially the flatscreen upgrade for $50...

edit: if you don't have issues with legality, cool. sounds like a damn good deal, assuming everything works as it should - get ALL the upgrades, assuming you've got the cash.
get specifications for the motherboard, and make sure it has a spare AGP slot for a real video card. 64MB isn't THAT bad, but it's behind everything else on the system, and onboard video is dodgy by its very nature.
if you're interested in sound quality, get a seperate soundcard, and make sure there's space on the motherboard for that.
get CDs for all the software, but I'd doubt that any of it is legal, so you probably won't end up with originals.
don't pay before you see the goods.
don't meet the guy in a dark alley somewhere.

depends what you're going to use it for! I have 2x 80gb HDDs and I reckon I'm still struggling for space.

I have my whole CD collection on there as mp3s (25-30GB).. plus if you do any sound or video editing, they take up heaps of room. Raw wave soundfiles are 10MB/minute... Raw AVI video is about 1GB/minute!

ADSL connections do terrible things to the amount of free space on a hard drive :) 4.5GB for video rips of The Amazing Race, and but for a CD burner I'd have another 15-20 CDs worth of games lying on there too

40 GB is not enough. Try to get at least 80GB.

I think I got 52... I find that alright to fill but with 3gb optus cable you never know >=)

Well, I'm on the sucky Telstra 3GB plan.. I think I've only gone over 3GB 2 or 3 months (I've been connected for over 2 years, since mid-2000). most were before they capped it at 3GB, and not by much.

Last month I probably skated over the line 100MB over the limit (so about $13 extra on the bill!!), which is the first time since the cap - I'm normally pretty good at controlling myself.

I think you will find that there is a difference between the "Flat Screen" monitor that this guy is offering and a "LCD" monitor that you are all thinking of which is the very thin unit.

The Flat screen being offered would be a CRT monitor, like most of us have, literally with a "Flat Screen".

The cheapest LCD monitor I have seen is a 15" for around $380 at the computer swap meets.

Also if looking at an LCD monitor, dont be afraid to buy a 15" one as you will find that they have the same 'viewable' area as a 17" CRT monitor. A 17" LCD would be equivilent to a 19" CRT.

Even so, the whole package sounds like a bargain IF the software is genuine.

Cheers

Ah I see what you need it for now. :) Do you guys on cable ever exceed your download limits?

Most of the stuff I have is ripped off DVD's, so then I can make SVCD's outa them. :)

If I had broadband, I'd need another 80GB like Des. I'm amazed at how much crap I get from 56k (around 1.5-2bg a month) so if I had cable it'd be easily doubled. :D

How does this work out, dillo?

Making SVCDs isn't too hard these days, is it M29? I've got a VCD Discman, which I bought in Indonesia. Would love to be able to make VCDs to play on it.
