I wonder if someone can help?
I normally turn on my computer and let it run throughout the day checking Emails and surfing the net from time to time.
The last month however it has been turning itself off automatically after an hour or so.Not whilst I am using it but whilst it lays dormant.
Although I was downloading some songs on limewire the other day and it shut down.
I ran the avast antivirus scan on Sunday and it even turned off during that.
Someone suggested a bug ,then he thought maybe windows updates had downloaded a power saver maybe that shuts it down when not in use.
Is there anyway I can look at this or adjust my settings?
Thanks BF friends:thumbsu::)

yo fan might be broke. Put your ear to the back and have listen. If its not working it means ur comps overheating and switching itself off. Happened to my old one

Yeah Does sound like it's overheating or Something on your motherboard is gone

Is it turning off completely or 'hibernating'? To check:

In WinXP - right click on your desktop - properties - screen saver - Power.
Can't remember off the top of my head if you have Vista but I have a feeling it's in the control panel somewhere.

If it's shutting down completely then it's the fan or motherboard. No doubt about it.

I have a bit of a seperate issue. I bought my laptop about a year ago, and when I don't have the charger in and I move it around, it occasionaly randomly turns off. It's quite bizarre and very annoying. I couldn't be bothered taking it to be serviced (I didn't even know what the exact issue was), so I just leave my charger in most of the time. Anybody know what the problem could be??

if ur fan isnt broken, try vacuuming the dust, which could be affecting ur fan, and other parts of the motherboard... i used to do that and would work properly until more dust came back

if u have tried everything and still turns off, u will have to reboot

btw, has anyones comp ever turned on by itself?... when i had a virus about a month ago, it would do that... freaky shit

My computer plugged it's wires in, switched on, connected itself to the internet, downloaded 500MB of Ghetto Gaggers pr0n and forced me to sit down and watch it.

My girlfriend only saw the pr0n part so she doesn't believe a word of it. Women:rolleyes:

A few weeks ago I had a couple of random shutdowns. I popped the case and there was a couple of mms of dust covering the graphics card. I cleaned it up a bit and haven't had it happen again. :thumbsu:

I had to upgrade my whole power source thingy.
Works fine now

My computer's doing this, and the power supply is ****ed.

Easy enough to put 2 and 2 together I think...(but FFS it's only been doing this since I got it back from getting fixed, for the FOURTH time.) :(

Dumb question but how to you safely open the back

It depends on what sort of case you've got.

Most desktop cases will have screws that can be removed to allow you to take the side panel off, some the top and sides come off as one, although they're usually pretty old.

I've seen this problem heaps of times as most people never consider the dust issue as a regular maintenance item. The dust dries up the lubricant on the fans and they seize up causing overheating. If you vacuum the fan/s from outside the case regularly usually there is no problem. If it hasn't been done for a while the dust build-up really means you have to crack the case open and do it from the inside. Use a soft brush attachment and be careful.

I actually use a very fine brush similar to a make-up brush to stir up the dust and vacuum from above.

Do I have to mention that you should do this with the PC off?

I have successfully revived stuffed case fans but its easier to replace them. Power supply fans are different again because they're hard-wired.

Its always worth considering replacing the power supply anyway, especially if you have added/upgraded hardware, upgraded the monitor and it draws power from your pc supply, or generally just because sometimes manufacturers use rubbish components.
