Adelaide can now boast it has the highest membership level of 50,138, also giving it the title of the first club in history to break the 50,000 barrier, in the year that the AFL has posted a record overall tally of 519,126 club members.
The AFL announced on Thursday the 16 clubs have combined to record an increase of 2.49 per cent on the previous record tally of 506,509 members posted in 2005.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said the audited figures – finalised after the June 30 deadline - were a tribute to the work of all clubs and the passion of supporters for the game in every part of Australia.
"The AFL and our clubs are in the privileged position where one in every 39 Australians is a paid-up and proud member of an AFL club," Demetriou said, in a statement released by the AFL.
"We would like to again thank our supporters for their commitment to the game, and to congratulate all clubs for their work in building club membership to record levels."
Nine clubs - Adelaide, Fremantle, Geelong, the Kangaroos, Richmond, St Kilda, Sydney, West Coast and the Western Bulldogs – had increased on their 2005 figures.
Sydney was also a big winner with an increase of 21.7 per cent to 30,382 members after winning its first premiership in 72 years, while the Western Bulldogs lifted their tally by more than 18 per cent to more than 26,000 members.
The full breakdown for all clubs is detailed below, along with a comparison to their 2005 totals. The adult membership breakdown is the basis for pro-rata distribution of finals tickets sales to competing club members in all finals matches.
