Alberto Contador has revealed he has failed an anti-doping test for the banned substance clenbuterol during this year's Tour de France.
Contador won the Tour de France for a third time in July, beating Andy Schleck by 39 seconds.
The doping control in question was carried on July 21 during the second rest of the Tour in Pau, in the Pyrenees. The day after, Contador set up overall victory by finishing in the same time as Schleck at the summit of the Col du Tourmalet.
A message issued by Contador's personal press officer said Contador had been a victim of food contamination and would give a press conference in his home town of Pinto, near Madrid at mid-day on Thursday.

Dirty cheat.

"A message issued by Contador's personal press officer said Contador had been a victim of food contamination"

Frank Schleck did it

More likely Cancellara.

Dont know if this is good news(that a cheat got caught) or bad news for cycling in general that a "poster boy" is a cheat. Guess it is a bit of both, short term pain, long term gain.

Gotta wait for more info, when Europe wakes up. Sounds like a weird drug to take.

Once a drug cheat, always a drug cheat.

The UCI needs to get tough ffs, none of this two year ban sh1t. They need to start banning these fools for life

No great surprise. Contador was one of the riders linked to Op Puerto, but was never convicted.

Now they have to catch Schleck..

EDIT: After reading a bit more about the drug here, the extremely low level detected makes it at least plausible that it's due to food contamination. It's also an unusual drug to take voluntarily, because it's easily detected and stays in the body for a long time.

Doesn't change my opinion that he's almost certainly a dope fiend, but it would be ironic if he got busted for a drug he didn't actually take intentionally.

And you base that on....?

Regardless, he is gone.

There's no tolerance when it comes to Anna Bolic agents.

PARIS (AP) - Three-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador tested positive for a banned steroid during this year's race and has been suspended by cycling's governing body. A lab in Germany found clenbuterol in Contador's urine sample on July 21 at the Tour de France, according to a statement from the UCI. But the amount was "400 time(s) less than what the antidoping laboratories accredited by WADA must be able to detect," the cycling organization said.

It's a minute trace of a fat burner.

You think Contador had weight issues? The 400km or so a week on a bike wasn't keeping him trim enough for competition?

Jee some people are stupid. I can't believe you can think his food was contaminated. Do you realise the amount of effort that goes into ensuring the riders are eating the correct food? On top of this the team has its own chef's and nutritionists to ensure something like contamination doesn't occur.

My guess is that the substance he has tested positive for is a by product so to speak of a blood transfusion or another form of doping.

I never understand why people believe riders' excuses. A lot of AC's rides in the last 4 years have been above thresholds that indicate doping.

I reckon he will get off, the UCI waited a month to break the story

I can't believe that it was food contamination, they have too many people working on it to not happen, it would be a result some other form doping like r dub said.

I wonder how many of his TDF's will be stripped? Will Cadel get yellow for his efforts in 2007? I hope so.:D

IF he is stripped of any titles (and we are a long way from that) it would only be from the date he tested positive (ie this years TDF). Cadel wont benefit from this in any way.

I tend to think it is an indicator of something "bigger" but this will drag on for years, and I am actually surprised this even made it to the surface knowing the history of spanish cycling..

Anyone tied up with Operation Puerto deserves to be treated as suspicious at best and guilty until proven innonce at worst. However he might not be sanctioned over this.

The triple Tour de France winner Alberto Contador has been provisionally suspended after traces of the bronchodilator clenbuterol were found in a urine sample given by the Spaniard on the second rest day of the Tour de France on 21 July.

.....

Contador was notified of the finding on 24 August, his spokesman said yesterday. A statement from cycling's governing body, the International Cycling Union, issued this morning said that the concentration of clenbuterol found in Contador's urine was 50 picograms, 400 times less than the threshold required by a World Anti-Doping Agency accredited laboratory, and that investigations were in progress

the food contamination isn't as important as the following

"This case required further scientific investigation before any conclusion could be drawn. The UCI continues working with the scientific support of Wada to analyse all the elements that are relevant to the case," said the statement.

but on the other hand

Clenbuterol is a bronchial dilator similar to the asthma drug salbutamol, which assists the breathing and oxygen transportation and can also be used to help weight loss as it increases the rate at which fats are metabolised.

The director general of Wada, David Howman, told The Associated Press that testing positive for even the most minute amounts of clenbuterol could be enough to sanction an athlete, although he declined to discuss the specifics of Contador's case.

and

"Clenbuterol is a substance that has been used for over 20 to 30 years. It is not anything new. Nobody has ever suggested it is something you can take inadvertently."

.....

The most high-profile case in cycling to date involving clenbuterol dates back to 1997 and the triple green jersey winner Djamolidin Abduzhaparov. Although the strict liability rules of drug testing mean an athlete is responsible for the substances found in his body, a recent case involving the swimmer Jessica Hardy was contested and resulted in a reduced ban after a panel ruled that the substance had been ingested inadvertently.

The facts on clenbuterol
• Used to treat breathing disorders as a decongestant and bronchodilator.

• Causes an increase in aerobic capacity, blood pressure and oxygen transportation. It also increases the rate at which fats are metabolised.

• It has been advertised as a weight loss drug and prescribed, commonly under the name Ventipulmin, for treatment of horses suffering from breathing disorders.

• Features on the 2010 Wada banned substances list as an anabolic agent.

• Athletes who test positive for clenbuterol can face a two-year suspension.

Several food contaminations were reported in recent years, especially in Asia.

Some of the cases

• In 2008, the American swimmer Jessica Hardy voluntarily withdrew from the Beijing Olympics after a positive test for clenbuterol. Her suspension was cut from two to one year after an arbitration panel said she took the drug inadvertently.

• In March, 2010, Chinese cyclist Li Fuyu tested positive for clenbuterol and faces a two-year suspension.

• Recent cases of positive tests for the substance include Polish canoeist Adam Seroczynski, British hurdler Callum Priestley, and Chinese Olympic judo champion Tong Wen.

Some of the cases

You would know as well as I do REH that the US drug agencies are ridiculously soft on their athletes, and I don't think that should be a relevant precedent. All you have to say is I'm sorry/ didn't mean to/ wasn't me etc. etc. in an appeal and they'll almost instantly reduce your suspension.

I was going to ask... these guys are well known to regularly do self administered blood transfusions t cover their tracks, is it likely the minute traces are from that? maybe contaroid was a bit sloppy?

They'll never do in the poster boys... ppl say its a sad day for cycling, its even sadder that these cheats get away with it
