This may seem premature or perhaps nuts to most, but I'm beginning to think we should extend Wallace's contract this year rather than 'seeing what happens' in 09... What the? You say - Hear me out.....

(By the way I too was a Wallace basher after last year, but what I've seen this year has changed my mind)

Yes, he hasn't been able to rebuild and assume success as fast as we impatient supporters would have liked, yes teams in a similar position in '05' have developed more rapidly than ours, and yes he could have recruited better but I think he has recified his initial patch jobs and is well on the way to forming a future 'regular finals' side. He is finally getting the right mix and required performances from the young player group and for the first time in my life I can see a real promising future.
He has now built the platform for future success.

This is Wallace's group of players and I would hate to see a 'St.Kilda' situation where a player group is lost due to coaching change.

I like the notion of signing Wallace for 2 extra years for the following reasons;

1. Stability - At long last our club the most stable i've ever seen. I think signing Wallace up to 2011 (2 year extension) immediately will allow Wallace to continue building our side for long term success without added pressure of basing next year's efforts on all his work so far.

2. Experience - He knows the list best, he has built the list and will know how to play the list in finals given his experience

I'm backing Wallace and would like to see him go all the way with this group of talent we have....

I want to at least see what happens for the rest of this season first. I think mid-2009 is when we should start thinking about that, to be honest. Way too early. I like what he's done with the list but I'm still not convinced that he can take us to the next level.

i totally agree axel and think its the best move for the club. The solid base has been built and wallace and miller deserve to see it through.i dont think we can truely judge wallace until we see the team perform in finals, if like stkilda we get there and cant win then at least he had his shot and time for someone else to have a turn. The list was that bad when wallace started that 5 yrs might not quite be enough time.
Many posters will get on here and say what the rush, wait till next year keep the pressure on and if finals look likely sign him on again..either way i think wallace is our man and it will be in a few years we will look to him as the man who changed our fortunes. The man who against all odds turned our club around from a broken rabble to a powerful respected force once again.

Wallace has said that he will not coach another club after us... So does he actually need a contract??? I mean there is no Risk for us because he wont coach else where .. and if he is confident of his ability to lead us then he should feel safe too.

Of course we should sign him on. It's plain obvious we are buidling an exciting list and Wallace is the man to take us places. I understand why we took the slower route to success and Terry was right to do it that way. No coach would come to Richmond after 23 years of disappointment and play all the kids like Hawthorn did in 2005. The supporters would have killed him. He had to do it gradually and that's why we won quite a few games in 2005 and 2006 because we played a mix of experience and kids. In 2007 we were forced to play more kids because of injury and look how the fans reacted . It's not Terry's fault we lost so many games and some by big margins. We had too many young kids, but now they are becoming experienced and things are starting to look great. We have the best coach we could ask for and it will show over the next 5 years. Any tiger supporter wanting to get rid of Wallace is an absolute Moron. Haven't they learned from the last 27 years? Are they that dumb? Do they realise how powerfull we are capable of being in a couple of years? :o

I was thinking mid 09 season evalution too, but looked at what Hawthorn did with Clarkson to avoid speculation and media hype. I just think signing him this season will instill confidence with him and the player group.

No coach would come to Richmond after 23 years of disappointment and play all the kids like Hawthorn did in 2005.

We only had the Deledio, Tambling, Meyer batch of kids in 2005, and we played most of them anyway.

Not sure which other "kids" he could have played?

Are you kidding me....
I agree with some other posters in that my faith in him is recovering, but to effectively secure his his sevices for another 2 years on top of his current contract is just ludicrous.
If we are not playing finals next year he must be shown the door:cool:

round 16-17 2009 , whats the hurry.........................................

oh sh!t gold coast team coming into afl

gold goast = sun = sun tan = suntan terry

just jokeing i like wallace , think he hs turned the list over pretty well

his hard work & efforts will be seen 2010 onwards.

I think the end of this season will be the best time to offer him a 2 year extension. Get everything settled before the season begins and then focus solely on gradually becoming a juggernaut top-4 side within that next 3 year period.

At the end of that time we should have an 'untaggable' midfield with a stack of depth and a settled bunch of KPP's at either end, with good backups playing at Coburg and constantly pushing the seniors to perform.

No Club Would Take Him............

Right now, you're correct. If Richmond continues to improve and makes the eight this year and then again next year with a list 90% of which he'd built himself, then I think he'd look pretty attractive to clubs looking to rebuild.

But he wouldn't want to go through that again, anyway, so it's a moot point.

If we beat Carlton this week, lets give him a 26 year Kevin Sheedy contract.

If we lose, lets sack him.

Typical post-1982 Richmond supporter thread.

LMAO

No way - even if we make finals this year - i wouldnt extend his contract until we look certain to make finals the next season too

____ some of you people think money grows on trees

I'm with astro. And yeah, Thomas was loved. He was also the only st kilda coach to ever make 3 consecutive finals series. Thompson got Geelong to consecutive prelims and still nearly lost his job. Richmond has won 2 in a row for the first time in - what, 2 years?? 3? - and all of a sudden TW's a supercoach and people want to extend the contract of a guy who's already massively overpaid for the results he's achieved? I'd go the other way. If he hasn't taken us to the finals after 5 years in charge, he's gone.

We review the contract towards the end of next year. If we are looking the goods this time next year, then negotiations can start...no need for any outrageous extensions though. If the side keeps performing well then Tezza's services will continue to be required. I'd give him no more than another 2 years IF our performances till 2009 warrant it. The old beat up datsun he inherited should now be transformed to a smooth moving BMW if the 5 yr plan is a winner, and thus maintenance should be much lower and thus the timeframe needed for success is much lower;)

Funny how bulldog trolls are attracted to any thread on the richmond board with the title "wallace" or "browny " like flies to the brown stuff.

Still hurts after all these years.
