Since he is contracted for another 2 years you would have to assume that any club not just Carlton will have to pay overs for him otherwise I can see no reason why we would give him up.

I can't see any reason why without a genuinely good pre-season in him he can't break into the best 22

Personally I think he is best 22 when he is fully fit, Just with an interrupted pre-season and several injuries he was never going to be able to get to peak fitness this season.

Like his dad said, he's in the unfortunate position of getting injured right as the swans hit form . Your not going to make changes for the sake of changes when your in the midst of the greatest winning streak the club has ever had. First injury of first loss and he will be back in, and all this trade nonsense will be over

With Mitchell at 400k, O'Keefe likely similar, and LRT/Walsh who would be well above base contracts, we must have the most expensive reserves side in the AFL

Mitchell Sr said he was not aware of Carlton’s interest.
“He (Tom) is pretty happy up there,” Mitchell said.
“He’s had a bit of a run of different things this year. Probably at the start of the year when they weren’t in great form he was rested and since then they haven’t lost a game.
“He’s been a little bit unlucky in that regard. And he’s missed a few weeks here and there with a couple of little impact injuries. But the club are having a great year and it’s a good place to be.”

He's not going anywhere.

Surely okeefe will be around 600k a year, been at the club his whole career and is a dual premiership player. Lrt wouldn't be far off. If expect those 2 would take up the best part of a million dollars

Where's Craig Bird at?

Still unsigned.

Sadly it wouldn't surprise me if he left, We have the likes of Heeney, Mills and Dunkley coming onto our list in the next two years along with Mitchell, Hewitt and Robinson most likely deserving opportunities in the near future.

Eventually a midfielder or two is going to have to make way.

The club and bird have probably out off talks until the end of the year, we have an extremely old chance at winning the flag and they probably don't want any distractions heading into the pointy end of the year ...the club did give him sir paul Kelly's number afterall

if someone gave LRT close to 600k a year then they should be sacked and committed

Hypothetically in the near future how do you you fit in Kennedy, Jack, Llyod, Parker, Hanners, Mitchell, Heeney, Bird, Dunkley, Mills, McGlynn, Cunningham and Jetta into the same midfield? (This isn't including Hewitt and Robinson as well)

Players are eventually going to miss out and leave for further opportunities.

I wouldn't be averse to trading Mitchell if Carlton offered pick 6 (what they'd have, as the ladder stands). If we got it early in the trading period, we'd have a good amount of time to turn pick 6 (plus something else potentially) into a very good player (a prime age ruckman perhaps or a youngish KPD) or a combination of players.

It'd be a risk for us, but if we offered Brisbane pick 6 (and possibly something else) for Matthew Leuenberger, do you think they'd say no automatically? With his injury issues, I can see them wanting to be rid of his contract and get another quality 18 yo in to build with. I think a deal could be brokered there.

My main point is that I'm by no means completely averse to trading Tom Mitchell. We could get a very solid deal out of him. It'd mean offloading something we have a true surplus of (inside midfielders) with Heeney, Mills and Dunkley possibly on their way (depending on the rule changes for the bidding process) in order to get something we are somewhat short in.

Kennedy, Jack, Lloyd, Parker, Hannebery, Bird, McGlynn, Cunningham and Jetta are already in the same midfield right now. You're really just assuming that Hewett, Robinson, Dunkley, Heeney and Mills with a combined total of zero games will all make it, and 3 of them aren't even on the list yet. History says at least a couple of them won't make it. And by the time they are ready, will McGlynn still be around? Will all of the current players be good enough to maintain their spots? Will the youngsters you listed go past Cunningham and Lloyd so they no longer deserve a spot? It is never as big a problem as people assume.

swansfan answered it
the odds the afl let us get heeney mills and dunkley?

mcglynn will retire soon enough in to the future he is closer to 30 than not

some fade, some dont make it,

not saying your wrong just we dont automatically lose some super great player who isnt getting a game

There is no way the club will move Mitchell along. The question is, has he been asking for a trade?

We still need to see where FA/trade table falls next year. With question marks over Bird, Mal, ROK I would suggest any players that we know can play first 22 football will need to be retained.

I seriously doubt Tom would be itching to move though.

Right now we have Kennedy, Jack, Llyod, McGlynn, Parker, Bird, Cunningham and Jetta with hopefully Hannebery to come back into the side this weekend.

All we need is a fit Mitchell and one or two of Heeney, Mills, Dunkley, Robinson or Hewitt to make it and we would have a serious selection dilemma on our hands eventually we are going to lose a player or two from our midfield similar to how Hawthorn sent us Kennedy and McGlynn.

It's just part of being a successful team.

Personally I really hope we don't lose a player or two, unfortunately I just think its probably more likely than not that eventually we are going to lose a player who leaves to try and get extra opportunities elsewhere.

You've left out Brandon Jack, Zac Jones and Lloyd Perris, who all have the potential to play midfield as well.

It will sort itself out. We obviously won't keep them all, but that doesn't mean we'll lose Tommy Mitchell straight up, especially as he's contracted. Two players at least will need to fill back half roles in the next couple of years, and there's every possibility we might lose a Malceski and/or a Jetta over the next two trade periods.
