Good lord, so much bed wetting over a bloke that's going to cost absolutely nothing and at the very very least improve our WAFL team and be a good leader for our developing midfielders. A role that was sorely missed this year.


Anyone crying about Dev after Barnett, Rawlinson, Owies, Petruculle sat on our list in 2025 needs a head check.


We aren't spending pick 1 on him, or even pick 51. Get a grip idiots. I think many will be pleasantly surprised tbh.

This time last year in this thread we swore black and blue Baker was okay but didn’t make us any better and Jack Graham is a plodder.

Baker is borderline a grade, a minus maybe but still very good. Graham has been, poor judgement suspension asides, one of our few decent and consistent senior players.

Sorry lads. I have a great deal of time for almost all of you and I’d have a beer/ ciders/ diet coke with pretty much all of you, but saying Dev Rob doesn’t improve our base or even our lower middle core players is off the mark. We just don’t have enough of those middle fodder.

No, he’s not Lachie Neale. He’s not Neil Erasmus. He’s not Sam Butler (original or Hawthorn editions). He’s probably in the same realm as Jack Graham, solid, hardworking but limited.

I’ll take him even now in a heart beat.

Thats what happens when youre a team that wins 1 game. For free im happy enough for the club to pick him up. Right in the age we need, just not expecting anything more than a fringe type guy. Certainly not worth the late 1st/early 2nd some were claiming only a couple of years back

I appreciate the point you are making, but Dev is nowhere near the proven commodity Baker or Graham were. He's not best 23 and never really has been in his career.
Most had expected Baker would add significant value to our 23, but were worried about the cost, which proved justified imo, even after he won our BNF. One could make the argument they didn't improve us in the sense they didn't "move the needle" enough to see us win more games.

Most on here thought that getting jack Graham last year was let's say.. an uninspiring move.

I see Dev as equal to Graham defensively and prob bit better offensively so get him in.

Dev is actually a midfielder where as Graham isn't as for quality of the players it's probably a draw .

Dev may not be a player in our next finals push but a stop gap whilst we rebuild .

I can guarantee you he would have played every game for us if fit over the last 2 years

Devs situation actually reminds me a lot of Ben keys in a way .

Apologies for my lazy fact checking last night.

Upon closer inspection Dev played a total of 13 out of 18 games (forgot the 3 byes in the VFL season)

However from those games

Lions went 9-3-1 with him & 2-3 without him.

6 of his best games for the year were against

Collingwood in Round 4 where he had 35 disposals, 11 clearances, 6 marks and 4 tackles.

Sandringham in Round 5 with 32 disposals, 7 clearances, 5 marks and 7 tackles.

Bombers in Round 10 with 31 disposals, 6 clearances, 5 marks and 6 tackles.

Giants in Round 12 with 36 disposals, 8 clearances, 6 marks and 9 tackles.

Geelong in Round 13 with 29 disposals, 7 clearances, 4 marks and 14 tackles. (1 goal, 1 behind as well)

Coburg in Round 19 with 30 disposals, 6 clearances, 9 marks and 6 tackles.

He was incredibly consistent through-out the year going by his statistics alone and whilst i don't think he will be a superstar, the VFL is the best state league in the country talent wise (sorry WAFL & SANFL) and he had an incredibly good season.

Considering our lack of depth in the midfield and our inability to clear the ball and apply pressure around the stoppages Dev is certainly worth a go considering these are two areas he excels in and he will cost nothing more than a token pick.

For the record, i'd love to bring in Tunstill as well if list spots permit it.

Dev could easily end up like a Hutchings who actually was a key to our 2018 flag (absolutely destroyed "player of the finals" Sidebottom). Limited skills but great defensively. Every successful team needs one of them and he's ready to go now.

For the caffeinated types, I love v black but I don’t love the fact it still doesn’t come sugar free so a pinelime Flying Power from Aldi is probably the next best. Completely opposite flavour profiles, sure, but still very good.

Just like Lachie Neale and Dev Rob are different profiles. One is red bull, one is flying power.

They don’t have to be like for like, realms are large places.
My point in the abstract is he’s a better option than having to pick someone from the WAFL whose form doesn’t merit it.

Yes, it’s a fine line between clogging spots for development. I get it and I get the concern, but as a club we can’t accept another 1 win season. We need to start building and aim for a 6 - 7 win season. If we land four okay we’re still bad but it’s a net gain. We need established players. We’ve tried to get the top shelf, it hasn’t landed, we’ll go for a Johnny Walker. Nothing special but it’ll do a job.

That’s where we’re at. If something better pops up then, great. It may well do.

Well, I'm still in the club that says throw a huge sack of cash at Sam Butler and hope for the best. Either he turns it down and stays at Hawthorn for way less coin, or we get a promising young player.

But the reality is that players often like staying at the club where they've made a lot of mates, and those who are looking to move aren't necessarily keen to join one of the worst sides in the past 50 years. Even a good side like Hawthorn is struggling to recruit the A-grade midfielder that they desperately want, so what hope do we have?

Where is our war chest? Sick of watching trade possibilities and our clubs name not mentioned in any of it. Good mindfielders available everywhere and WCE not linked to virtually any of them.
If we have to over pay then over pay. They won't come to us to play finals yet so they need to come to us to earn more than they could dream of.
Merrit, Simpkin, Steele, Windhager, etc etc.
There is no way we are good enough to hide it from the media which means we are simply not talking to them or have been told that under no circumstances does the player want to move interstate which is also likely.

What my worry is what Clarke Kent, gives up to get him.
I can’t help but feel very nervous with us having a very good draft hand and us botching it up.

We drafted well last year but our work at the trading table was appalling.

A very inauspicious start to his tenure at West Coast has left me apprehensive and concerned that Clarke Kent might just spud this trade week up.

We are precariously poised at the bottom of the ladder and if we botch this trade and draft period up, then we are in for “Northesq”, sustained period of incompetence.

Massey I have faith in but I worry that Clarke wont ensure that Massey has the best picks at his disposal.

I hope like hell that my worries are missed placed as the T&D period is a real opportunity for us to improve.

Yes, looking likely isn't it. My missus is fully on board.

My view is that he is one of those guys who is impressive at state level but lacks the pace, polish and flexibility required to be a consistent and meaningful contributor at AFL level (regardless of who he plays for). And it hasn't been for lack of opportunity.

I would gladly be proven wrong though!

Yes, ban any trading out of 1st round picks, only allow trading up. But it is the same person who went to water, couldn't hold to the last hour and traded pick 3 for magic beans.

I assume Brisbane will delist Dev so I think he will pretty much cost us nothing.

Clarke gets one more go at it. Last year was a disaster but he did also bring in our BnF and his mate.

If he does something similar again this year he needs to be shown the door. We need elite talent.
