Geez, be good of they gave the bloke a chance.
Thomas finished 15th, 15th and 11th in his first three seasons...I guess the players never wanted to play for him either?
Having said that, Harves do yourself a favour anf get rid of the crabs...
The Dockers are sinking
6/04/2009 4:56:00 PM, Next It’s not Fremantle's emblem that is dragging them along the ocean floor.
Mark Harvey was a tremendous player. His courage and character exemplary. He was the type of person that most people would want at their BBQ – a great guy to have a few beers and talk a bit of crap.
It is sad to say it, but unfortunately he seems to be well out of his depth. He has failed to stamp any traits of his wonderful qualities on the team he is accountable for.
For whatever reason, his charges do not respond to his coaching and don’t play for him. Harv’s seems to be under siege and lacks confidence with what to do.
It is a very difficult time for a coach when you are not sure that the playing group are aligned to your thinking. I suspect there is a very real disconnection between his philosophies and their desire to implement.
At the end of the day a coach is ultimately responsible for team performance and to this point in time their output has been less than acceptable on several fronts.
Harv’s is a man's man – you won't get sucked along in his slipstream with strategies, tactics and theories, however he is rock solid and has that earthy nature that endears him to anyone that comes into contact with him.
Coaching AFL is a very tough caper for the uninitiated. It is definitely over-rated from a media perspective, but you have to be able to manage a myriad of quite sophisticated roles that require experience and an intricate knowledge of managing people.
Dare I say it, but there are some coaches that were born to be an Assistant Coach. I think Mark Harvey is one of those coaches. He is fiercely loyal, reliable and trustworthy.
I also thought Ross Lyon was in the same category because of his personality type, his ability to engage with people, understand them and manage them. Perhaps I am wrong on Ross as he seems to have developed aspects of his coaching – time will tell.
In the meantime, Mark Harvey is in a corner and has the whole football world narrowing in on him. He is street wise and never backpedals. It will be an interesting exercise over the coming weeks as Harvey must be reaching the end of his tether and patience. He deserves better.
