I know that Cotch has only played a handful of games of which has positively impacted our club, whereas this season is Bryce Gibbs' second in the big league! Saturday will be a massive assignment for both lads and would love to witness them playing on each other so as to guage the progress of our future star in the making. Personally, I think that Cotchin has displayed numerous exceptional skills in his short career with the Tigers surpassing Gibbs' initiation into the AFL last season. Three weeks ago (against the Crows), Chris McDermott commented on his sublime ball movement comparing him to a 200 game veteran! Fingers X he has a blinder this Saturday!!!

would be a good match up. cotchin has made a more immediate impact in his first few games however gibbs was tiny and underage in his first year. imo gibbs would win this contest at this stage. as to who will be the better player, only time will tell.

I think Trent is just as underage in his first year as Gibbs was.

Round 1 next year, I'd agree with you MT, but this saturday, Gibbs would run Cotch off his feet.

At centre bounces, fitness won't really determine who wins the clearances. I think Gibbs and Cotchin would play off each other and Cotch will spend more time on the bench

Good comparison of averages when one has played 34 the other 6

:confused:Why do we always feel the need to try and talk up our players, or talk down others by comparing them to players at other clubs? I don't see the need or relevance.
Richmond has Cotchin, Carlton has Gibbs ... I'm sure both clubs are quite happy with their lot.
Comparisons between players - especially those drafted a year apart - are meaningless.
I don't give two hoots what Gibbs is doing or not doing at Carlton. All I care about is Cotchin and making sure he's a star for us (which he will be).
Bragging rights that he may be better than Gibbs count for nothing...especially if we don't get the four points on Saturday.
It's not like Gibbs was available to us and it was a choice for either side between the two. Who cares?
This week I've seen Gibbs v Cotchin, Wojcinski v McMahon, and God knows who else v Someone else I don't care about.
Pointless dealing in hypotheticals!

Yeah I'm as biased as hell but for mine, there is little comparison.
Gibbs has an extra year up his sleeve and will be a damn good player but he will be a different type of player to Cotchin.
The difference is that from the first couple of games it was obvious that Cotchin is a natural footballer with outstanding skills and instincts. Not once has he in any way looked like he belongs anywhere except in the middle of the MCG.
Gibbs took a little longer to look confortable.

Oh... & I agree with you Goldy re comparison threads in general.

Settle down Dusty and take a chill pill!!!! Thought I'd just provide some interesting detail on two young rival players preparing for battle this weekend who are both capable of playing dominant roles as onballers for their respective teams for years to come!

At this stage, I doubt there is much comparison.

Gibbs has many more games under his belt than Cotchin and at such an early stage in both their young careers, that is invaluable. The fact that numerous Tiger supporters would openly admit that Gibbs would likely have the better of the two at this stage is pretty telling. Although, I sincerely doubt we would see many Carlton fans talking up Cotchin over Gibbs, at least not yet. And that is with all biases aside.

Either way, I can't wait to see what Cotchin has to offer after a pre-season and another year in. He is a goer, and the signs so far have been very promising. It still surprised me the other week when he only had about 13 touches. Judging by the way he played and what he did with them, I could have sworn he had 25.

Cotchin is 1 month younger and 2.5cm shorter in his first year than Gibbs was in his.

fair enough but i wasnt talking about height
i was actually reffering to his bulk, gibbs was scrawny as any player ive seen. as a big tackler this limited his game. those who are labelling gibbs a soft outside runner should watch some games instead of one youtube clip. he is third at carlton in hard ball gets.

At this stage they wouldn't, because it's not true, but who knows where they'll be in 3 seasons, 5 or 10 seasons? Cotchin could have 3 Brownlows, but Gibbs could have two premierships, which would you rather have?...

Cotchin could very well turn out to be better than Gibbs, or Gibbs could be better than Cotchin in the long run, but both players are massively important to their clubs and they both have roles to play for the best part of 15 years. At this stage, Gibbs is ahead by default as Cotchin has only played 6 games, wait until Cotchin is at least where Gibbs is now and see how they compare, I suspect Cotchin's stats will be quite a bit better than Gibbs'.

Is this thread a ____ing joke?

No seriously..is it a joke. Cotchin is 10 times the player Gibbs is already.

This is why people don't take Richmond supporters seriously.

Bit rich coming from a supporter of a Club widely regarded as having the most delusional supporters...

Both will be stars but Gibbs would win at this stage, hopefully we get a glimpse on saturday. Cotchin looks to be a future star of the comp, great for the comp because Richmond have been crying out for a superstar mid for a while now. He is your answer and will bring your fans much joy watching him over the next 10 years or so.

I wouldn't say that. Carlton fans have been widely regarded as having something to look forward to. I guess that has made alot of our fans very cocky, nothing wrong with that, it keeps us going from season to season.

Yes, the club may be widely regarded as having delusional fans, but look at the bigger picture.

Did I state 'omg, this thread is a joke, a big joke, Gibbs is 45x the player Cotchin will ever be, Cotchin doesn't deserve to lace Gibbs' boots?' No, what did I do, I gave reasons why I think that both players are already/will be in the future equally important to their club in their respective roles, which may turn out to be the same or very different.

A comment like that is utter trash, how on earth can someone come out and say that Cotchin is 10x the player Gibbs is (after 6 games of AFL)...

It staggers me

I will admit, I'm not the most liked person on the Carlton board, in fact, I'm not liked very much at all, but at least I'm willing to construct a proper argument, even with a Richmond fan.
